Too bad we don't have a time machine where we can send the Wii to the sixth generation and the Wii U to the seventh. That would have helped Nintendo a bit.

Cost is important. NX hits too high, it's DOA, period.

I'm curious about how they're making it sound like it is two-in-one after a fashion, or if the Wall Street article is just misworded, and that the two systems will work closely on crossplay a la PS 4/Vita. Iwata was pretty clear that they weren't shooting for an actual 2-in-1.

Oh. I guess the handheld and the console working closely together makes sense.

You know, looking back on it, I'm surprised that Sony beat Nintendo to that with the PS 4 / Vita (I think it's the Vita Play function or whatever) considering the stuff Nintendo usually does with it's consoles and Handhelds since the Gameboy Player on the N64.

Early target specs tend to not be completely accurate. I remember the Wii U was apparently a lot stronger at first until Nintendo downgraded it near release or something. Some issue with one of their partners? Either way, it's too early to get accurate spec leaks aside from broad stronger than 3DS type info.

Nintendo downgraded for heat/power consumption purposes, it's believed.

Okay, so what exactly does this NX thing mean? Is Nintendo giving up on the Wii U?

It would suck if that's what's happening. I know they can't make games for three different systems.

NX is supposed to be the replacement.

Though I don't know if it's been long enough for the regular console cycle to end. Then again, Nintendo got a year long head start on Microsoft and Sony.....

....which they kinda wasted sadly enough.

At this rate they won't announce the NX until 2016. Unless they have a pretty short window between announcement and release it won't be out until 2017. There's a five year gap between 2012 and 2017 which is normal for a console generation.

They abandoned the Wii U after Mario Kart 8 failed to save it. 100% when Zelda was delayed. We just didn't know for certain until E3 2015 where they announced all of 2 small new Wii U games. It's the successor to both systems though, and if they're doing what I think they're doing it'll solve the 3DS's biggest non-mobile problem.

That makes me sad.

You don't think they are gonna skip out on Zelda for this gen and save it for NX do you?

......have we brought that up before? I feel like this isn't a new topic.

If so, then just ignore me.

It's been brought up ad nauseum since the delay was announced and hasn't slowed.

Zelda isn't Paper Mario or Kirby, was developed for 3 years as a Wii U game, has been explicitly promised since 2013, and should come out in 2016 when the Wii U userbase is still semi-active. Twilight Princess being on the Gamecube did not hurt the Wii one bit, and it sold alright on the Gamecube still anyway. The other systems have shown time and time again that cross-gen releases can still be big system sellers. Zelda U will come to Wii U. As long as it comes out 2016. If it gets delayed to 2017, then by that point there won't be much point in a Wii U version.

I'm just curious as to what Nintendo expects to achieve with the NX.

I mean, did they finally realize cheap gimmicks like the Gamepad don't work anymore?

That depends on if the console/handheld linkage counts as a cheap gimmick. From the way it's being described, it'll be used more for convenience (playing the same games on both units) and less for the kind of stuff that Nintendo has previously used console/handheld connections for.

The wii u needs only last 5 years to keep pace with most other Nintendo systems.

It means the gimmick needs to not be shit this time. 3D was a terrible gimmick while the 3/DS made the gamepad obsolete and worn out before the Wii U was even released. Maybe if Splatoon and Mario Maker had made it the first year things would be better, but that's hindsight. I'm still betting on AR if there is anything.

Since no one is asking, the big problem with the 3DS is that it's hard to make games for compared to everything else. It doesn't support middleware very well, the specs make downporting difficult, and it's just really exotic compared to standard PC/mobile architectures. It has the userbase even with mobile eating into its lunch, but it's not getting all the games it should, even in Japan. Resident Evil Revelations 2 should have been on 3DS, but it wasn't because it's too much of a pain to create a lead 3DS version and port from there vs just making PS/XB the lead platforms. Fix that, and most mid-tier releases should be able to make it to the handheld.

I liked the Gamepad idea. Got a relative who's often playing his PS 4 so I need someway to play my own games.

Admitedly, I prefer playing on the T.V., but I thought the gamepad was clever.

I tried the Wii U gamepad out at my local fair and even with the TV turned off and I just couldn't get into it. Felt like I was playing my iPad.

I am going to have a hard time going from gamepad to no gamepad.

It's just so convenient to me. It's had the side-effect of making me use full-TV-using games less.

If they're integrating the console and handhelds then they'll probably keep the gamepad and just give it the ability to function independent of the main unit.

My biggest hope is that they keep using the Wii remote and attachments, Wii U Gamepad, and the Wii U Pro Controller alongside any other controllers they come up with for the NX.

Yeah. The Wiimote is still pretty cool.

But I doubt it will play Wii games anyway. Most new consoles only go back one gen at most.

Careful with these speculations and anticipation. This report was initially made by the Wall Street Journal, the same news site that state we will have Zelda Netflix (live action) in production (and how did that turn out). Don't be too certain or otherwise it may lead to another false hype bound to disappoint. Maybe we need some ridiculous rumor that states that NX can also act like a Hoverboard for kids of this generation to quell down these rampant rumors. And that you don't need your hands to play it. tongue

[up][up] VC releases.

Also, I love using the Wii remote occasionally with Smash, and some people still like the motion controls with Mario Kart.

Double post.

It looks like the rumors have a grain of truth. The author of the WSJ article about the NX development kits confirmed several devs are unable to run the software dev kit at 60 fps without a beast computer.
