Okay, so my previous campaign went from level 1 to level cap with 3 of the original players over the course of three years. Yes, it was awesome. I've got enough experience now that I'd like to tear the system apart and build my own modifications into the rules from the beginning instead of sticking to a specific edition. The system can give me baselines, but I want to add/subtract elements of my own, and 5th edition seems like the best version to do that in. What I want to play: Dark fantasy with intrigue storylines.

Setting: I like players having an impact on the setting. The way the players ended the previous campaign, "Pelor" is a series of three gods, referred to by the phases of the day: Morning, noon-day, and evening. There is a trickster 'god' who is a teleporting staff and progenitor of all kobolds ever. The Raven Queen is controlled by the Far Realms, and this has made a huge impact on how death works.

Bodies have to be burned when they die, or they will come back to some form of life. Usually as a creature of the Far Realms. A creature of the Far Realms is hurt and might be destroyed by bright daylight, so they must stay in dark/overcast areas. A person possessed by a creature of the Far Realms can be freed by putting them in bright sunlight.

Ideas I have so far: Add the SANity score from Call of Cthulhu. Use some advantages/disadvantages from GURPS, telling players they have to end with a specific negative score, and giving up to -30 in disadvantages. 5e scores will use the Point Buy system, and after that are modified by the GURPS ability points system, allowing characters to raise their stats by taking more game-specific disadvantages.

  • What sort of published modules can I mine for inspiration/plagiarism?
  • What are good plots at low levels, and what should I expect to do at high levels?
  • What losses would be fun to inflict on characters that isn't "your character dies/is too insane to continue play"?
  • Is there anything Ravenloft that would be good to borrow from, specifically, since that supposed to be the Gothic Horror setting of D&D?

One fun idea I think would be "Your character suddenly comes to the overwelmin grealisation that they are afraid of X" if it has a mechanical penalty or just a roleplay penalty is up to you. Will save or be shaken/panicked/frighened is upto GM decsion on how you want to do this. For reasources to mine well as it is obvious Call of Cthulu and anything similarly lovecraftian is a great resource. You may be able to find some more stuff from other Horror Tabletop Games such as All Flesh Must Be Eaten. Warhammer I heard may have some good stuff to look at. (Though I am unfamiliar with 40K so not fully sure.)

"After time adrift among open stars, along tides of light and through shoals of dust, I will return to where I began."
