Apologies for the late post. Had a bit of a family problem a while ago...
So...daytime air assault with a separate motorized force on the ground against a prepared target?
Gimme a moment to spool up Voodoo Child...
I can say that it's going to be exciting.
So, I guess Jacques is going to have to take the role of infantry, isn't he? Or could he be part of the recon team?
I thought we talked about that he's recon? It serves as special forces.
Backstory sketches: that incident in Helmand involved some FAC work, a danger close Hellfire missile, and a certain British captain in the Army Air Corps getting an earful of interesting Australian vocabulary.
In her defence, Amelia was under some stress at the time (and also HMG and RCLR fire), she did apologize later at the bar, and she wouldn't have used such language if she'd known whom "Captain Wales" actually was.
Charlie Stross's cheerful, optimistic predictions for 2017, part one of three.Oh my. Il-76s! This is even better, considering the sheer amount of stuff we can lift in one wave...
Charlie Stross's cheerful, optimistic predictions for 2017, part one of three.Looks like the dummies at the air force did something right for a change.
Hmm. Say, is Sgt. Akide going to be one of Amelia's crew, or am I free to personalize them out?
Charlie Stross's cheerful, optimistic predictions for 2017, part one of three.Yep. He is. You did say that you wanna control him in the upcoming operation.
Hmm, let me rephrase that a little.
From what I've gathered, an armored car like the ones we're using has three crew: driver, gunner, and commander/loader. Nate Romilly will probably get his own car and his own crew; I don't know if Akide is going to be on Amelia's crew or will be in his own car.
That leaves either one or two crew positions for Amelia's car, and I'd like to know you intend to handle those, or if you'll let me roll up some warm bodies to fill those seats. (Depending on how things go, I might also be asking about recruiting standards and how hard it might be to fall through the cracks, because there's nothing quite like discovering that your driver might have exaggerated a little about his driving experience, for added comedic/dramatic potential...)
Also, try as I might, I'm having trouble figuring out the LAV-300's capacity. Just about every source lists it as 3 crew, 9-10 passengers, which would be just dandy...but I don't know if that applies to the 90mm configuration.
EDIT: I'd plan on treating them more as secondary/tertiary characters than full-on PCs, by the by. Unless you want them as NPCs, that is.

Charlie Stross's cheerful, optimistic predictions for 2017, part one of three. If you wanna handle the warm bodies for the LAV-300s, then let me know. Though I could put Akide in there with Amelia, if that's fine.
Though I don't have the notes anymore that I send to ya since they got deleted forever.
As for how the volunteer brigade recruits volunteers, they need to have honorable discharges. And they shouldn't have a criminal record of sorts prior to his/her recruitment.
Got some info on the Mark II variant.

Sorry for late post. Been busy in IMFDB and catching up on tv shows and stuff.
I still got Akide's notes. Not much of a grasp on his character, but I'll get there, I think.
As for PFC Abdelkarim ag Mahmoudnote ...hmm. I'm keeping his backstory flexible. One thing's certain, his age papers are way off, and he's probably got much less experience than his papers say he does (isn't low-level bribery and corruption great?). It probably cost his family quite a bit, but it's worth it to get out of the way of Ansar Dine and the interminable militia wars in north Mali/southern Libya and get to a place where the captain doesn't steal your wages.
Also, I see we get laser pointers but not designators. This'll be interesting...

Charlie Stross's cheerful, optimistic predictions for 2017, part one of three. The pilot of Il-76 #2 is more certain to get to Heaven than the local imam.
While the imam preaches, people sleep; but once the pilot is at the controls, people pray. Though this is more because of the plane he flies than to himself, personally...
Charlie Stross's cheerful, optimistic predictions for 2017, part one of three. Thanks Sabre. I got worried about it.
Got anything about his nationality?
Malian Tuareg, overlaps with Libya.
Charlie Stross's cheerful, optimistic predictions for 2017, part one of three.Ah. I see.
Abdelkarim's characterization is something of a work-in-progress. As might be evident, he's a lot newer and rawer than most of the mercs.
Also, just in case any definitions are needed: the shahada is the declaration of faith in Islam, the familiar "there is no God but God and Muhammad is His prophet". In context, the idiomatic translation would be "ohgodohgodohgod ohgodohgodohgod ohgodohgodohgod", to be kept up until the Il-76 is back on the ground again.
It's a good thing for him that he doesn't know about some of Russia's more brilliant ideas about what to do with Il-76s, or he'd probably swear off flying entirely.
Charlie Stross's cheerful, optimistic predictions for 2017, part one of three.I don't know if I got that right for Brittaney's response.
If I need to correct it, let me know.
Not much for us ground troops to do while riding in the aircraft/helis.
Charlie Stross's cheerful, optimistic predictions for 2017, part one of three.I'll handwave that part later on when I get a chance to post since I need to do something right now.
In this instance I drew from my experience with flight simulators (as in Microsoft, Jane's USAF as opposed to the carrier take off from The Unsung War) as well as something you may be familiar with in driving a car, a vastly different or maybe inferior car, for the first time. Try booting up any aviation game and go from a Hornet or equivalent to a Jaguar or F-4 and you could see the difference in performance, handling, that Brittaney would be getting accustomed to.
As for the woman herself, you have the profile, I try and work in a little backstory or her personality so others can get a better grasp of how to react to what I post. Terrorists, kill'em all, sympathizers, try joining their new lords and masters and see what happens; go on do it, and she'd tell you that with a big smile on her face. Essentially she wants to help, I try to emphasize that when I write, except her idea of help is to be a unrepentant killer, no mercy, no second chances, certainly no apologies, and she would get those who were threatened to cheer right along with her. But yeah Brittaney is...not sure what trope would best describe her, Brittaney. Commander Shepard if she were played by Alyson Hannigan may not be in the right ball park but if you are a little confused then that certainly wouldn't be the worst way to picture how to envision the character.
Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursApologies for being later. Watched by a BBC documentary on the fall of Yugoslavia.
Yes.
Just waiting if someone else will post. If not, I'll start in a few minutes.
