The description makes it out to be about a substitute being solely for "a character who has left the show due to real-life distractions." I cannot for the life of me understand why this qualifier is there.
Many examples are from mediums where that simply doesn't apply, and there are many internal reasons for the trope (such as Character Death or the character being Put on a Bus) that have nothing to do with Real Life reasons. Honestly, most of the times I see this trope is when the writers kill a popular character off and try to capture lightning in a bottle by making a similar character.
Not to mention the examples certainly don't match this description.
