In our fora, we have some threads with several hundred thousand posts. In most fora I know and frequent, threads are usually locked and archived if they have more than several thousands of posts.

No idea how exactly the current forum is coded, but since TV Tropes is overhauled - will there be changes? Maybe this would help to reduce the server load.

There is no such project in the pipeline that I know of.

And I know enough about programming that I can say that closing threads after they hit a certain size doesn't do squat about server load since it's not contingent on thread length.
