Kotaku added an update to their oriignal article with a statement from Nintendo after they reached out:
Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition is currently planned to ship from Sept. 29 until the end of calendar year 2017. At this time, we have nothing to announce regarding any possible shipments beyond this year.
Our long-term efforts are focused on delivering great games for the Nintendo Switch system and continuing to build momentum for that platform, as well as serving the more than 63 million owners of Nintendo 3DS family systems. We are offering Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition in special recognition of the fans who show tremendous interest our classic content.
Good God, is Nintendo still being low-key about their classic P&P consoles?
They had such a big hit on their hands with NES Classic, and what are they doing with its followup? Not holding any major events or announcements for it. Just an offhand Twitter announcement.
I'm not sure Nintendo has learned their lesson here.
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.Maybe they intend to keep it under the radar so that demand isn't as incredibly high (thus allowing more legroom for purchase). But I guess it wouldn't help against scalpers because they circle such things like vultures.
I mean they don't really need a huge announcement event or anything for something that won't matter in a year.
Related, the new 2DS got the same kind of announcement.
The NES Classic was pretty much the same thing. Just a quick little Twitter announcement.
All they need to do with these plug-and-play systems is let nostalgia do the heavy lifting for them while they spend their big marketing bucks on the Switch and to a much lesser extent the 3DS.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."I know the mini NES was a low key announcement too.
It's just that the unexpected fanfare should have signalled to Nintenfo that there is a lot more for the P&P market than they thought.
And yet they're still treating it like a small niche market.
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.I like that treat it the way that they have: as just some side thing of theirs that makes a lot of money. It doesn't take a ton of effort to create on their part, and people will snatch them up regardless of how they're advertised. The products that need the money and attention to sell them are getting it.
Already preordered one.
I figure if I can cancel and get my money back if I decide I don't want it, but if there's stock issues I won't have to worry.
The Super Famicom Classic game list. Japan swaps out Castlevania, Kirby's Dream Course, Earthbound, and Punch Out for Tetris Attack, the original Fire Emblem, Panel de Pon, Goemon, and Soccer
@Hashil: If it takes so little effort to make on their part, why do they produce so few?
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.Because it exists solely to boost short term profit and not long term profit. It exists solely to have something else pretty noteworthy for the holiday season to get Nintendo a quick buck (even though they already have a couple of heavy hitters lined up).
It's worth noting that there are basically only two reason to get one: The novelty (especially if you're a collector) and the value (since it should be cheaper than buying all of those games on the VC). Of the games on it, the only one I know you can't get on the Wii or Wii U VC is Star Fox 2 since that was never officially released anywhere.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Wait, why is the Super Famicom Classic getting "Super" Street Fighter 2 instead of Street Fighter 2 Turbo Hyper Fighting...
Then again SSF2 is the game where Zangief can grab you full screen...

My DA account... I draw stuff sometimes!Which will just make it all the more tragic when it's revealed that they still can't emulate SFX chip on Switch hardware.
Please help out our The History Of Video Games page.So which Final Fantasy III are we getting for the SNES Classic? The actual III or VI?
It better be VI. III hasn't aged well.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?VI, as only that one came out on the Super Nintendo.
It will probably be the original Super Nintendo version if they're still calling it III.
I suspect the third party licensing agreements includes an explicit limit on how many SNES Classics can be put out; it's not unreasonable that Square Enix, Capcom, and Konami don't want to give Nintendo the ability to publish Secret of Mana, Megaman X, and Contra III until the end of time.
Edit: Final Fantasy III = Final Fantasy 6; the US SNES releases are the only games that explicitly used Roman numerals.

x2 Okay, thanks for the clarification.
The original SNES version of VI is probably good enough on its own, especially since I'm willing to bet it has fun glitches that the ports lack.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?>Terra casts Vanish
>Locke casts X-Zone
Hopefully they at least bother to try to fix the Relm Sketch glitches so they don't completely mess up the entire SNES Classic.
x2 Doesn't that let you One-Hit Kill bosses?
What?

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with? Some versions of Final Fantasy 6 have a memory corruption bug caused by Relm using the Sketch command; if used wrong it can serious mess up the cartridge. (The presence of memory corruption bugs in that era of RP Gs isn't that uncommon; several versions of Pokemon had that issue as well.)
I presume they're using a later version of FF 6, which doesn't have the issue.
They've released revisions to fix the worst of the Sketch bug on the SNES.
Vanish Doom/X-Zone + a bunch of other bugs will still be there and you'll still be able to lock the game up by Sketching the wrong thing.
yep, vanish/doom lets you kill almost anything instantly. Most bosses are immune to Doom-type instant deaths, but Vanish makes any magic spell 100% accurate - and for some reason, that supercedes immunities. The only things you can't use the combo on are ones who are immune to Vanish in the first place.
I hope that glitch isn't so easy to pull off that one could do it in regular gameplay.
Goddammit, Schezo... || *insert incredibly thirsty copypasta about Dr. Ratio*
I missed out on the NES min and will probably miss out on this too.
I hope Switch VC will add all the Wii and Wii U (and mini NES) had with the improved colors and crisper sound that the Wii U VC bafflinlgy lacked.
And hopefully add these mini SNES games there too, inlcuding Starfox 2.
