There's a handful of different ways to view it. In your instance, how does your analogy work? Like, what makes each specific period represent each specific age?

And where does PlayStation 4, Xbox One & Wii U and PlayStation 5, Switch & Xbox Series X fit?

I just cleared every spirit and fighter in the Light Realm in “World of Light”, now I’m gonna go take care of Galeem.

Someone looked at Miyamoto's IMDB page and found credit for a Star Fox game coming to the Switch this year.

Adult period. The time when the indie boom and growing genuine maturity of the industry was leading to moving away from immature "teehee me so grown up because blood and boobies" thing and towards the industry more opening up to bring in more people.

My 12-year-old niece is a big gamer now. She even told me "my friend isn't really a gamer; she only plays Roblox." When I was a kid, a girl being into any game, even just one, was nearly unthinkable.

But not my older brother's wife is a big gamer in the house, along with both their son and daughter. It's amazing how far we've come. And we have games for everyone, like Video Game/Calico, which my niece is into (she also likes Pokemon and Broforce).

There's a handful of different ways to view it. In your instance, how does your analogy work? Like, what makes each specific period represent each specific age?

Fifth generation (middle school): the transition period between 2D and 3D being similar to going through puberty. The industry is starting to want to be seen as more mature as games that are more serious stories start to become popular (FFVII, MGS 1, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Half-Life, and OOT for example).

Sixth generation (high school): games are now starting to want to be seen as mature, but are going all in on eschewing being seen as kiddy in order to be seen as cool and hip. It’s also wanting to be more social, represented by online gaming becoming a thing here.

Seventh Generation (college): It starts similar to the seventh generation where it’s still acting like it’s in high school (reflecting how most people start college at 18 years old) but eventually starts to grow out of it as it transitions to full adulthood. Online gaming exploding in popularity here is essentially college students throwing parties.

Well, the good news? I defeated Galeem.

The bad news? Turns out they’re not the only evil deity trying to conquer the multiverse.

At that point it’s preferred if you’d just edit the last post you made there.

...but video games have been a mainstream thing since the 80's.

Well, it's been a gradual progression. There's no single point where you can say "This is when they went mainstream". Like, they certainly went way more mainstream with the NES, and the PS2, and the Wii, and smartphones.

I missed the part where that's my problem.

Chinese Accessories manufacturer Mobapad have posted this information about next gen on Bilibili. From my understanding, it was posted before the last article, but wasn't noticed until now.

  • New larger magnetic Joy Cons. New button on the back and below the home button, and the SL and SR buttons are metallic.
  • Backwards compatibility with carts and controllers.
  • Dock has a USB-C port and supports 4K output.
  • New kickstand has a damping bracket.
  • Bigger screen with resolution to 1080p.

Oh right, Switch doesn't have a USB C plug, but a 2.0 to C cord.

I suppose controller backwards compatibility doesn’t extend to handheld mode, if the joycons dock in a completely different fashion. I wonder how strong these magnets are going to be?

Yep. Gaming has been seeking to be mainstream after the Atari days.

It just didn’t fully achieve it until both the 6th and 7th generations

[up][up] Should have mentioned it, but the article says the Bluetooth will be backwards compatible, not physically.

It's strange how much we know about the Switch's successor, yet Nintendo has never said anything about it. (Along with the fact that we've been speculating for years about it.)
