YKTTW: What is the "remove a hat" button for?

Greetings, fellow tropers!

I couldn't find a policy on this. Is its purpose to be able to withdraw one's own hat, once given? Or is it meant to de-hat-ify drafts that have more hats than one sees fitting? Because it always shows up, whether one has given a hat or not.

Greetings!

The de-hat button is to remove a hat from YKTTW drafts that one doesn't consider launch ready, basically.

So one's actually meant to be able to remove other people's hats? That seems like it would be prone to starting edit wars.

This leads me to a further question: You're only meant to give a single hat to any one draft, right? But if you removed another troper's hat, giving one yourself once the draft has improved only lets you come out even. So, should you add two hats then?

Or am I terribly overthinking this?

Overthinking it a bit. One person can only remove or add one hat. Removing a hat means that you think that the YKTTW draft does not deserve an already given hat.

Giving a hat means " I think that this YKTTW, as it stands right now is ready to launch as a full-fledged wiki page. It does not need anything more. The description is good, the name is good, the examples list is good. It's ready to go."

However, there are some folks who use hats to indicate "I like the idea of the YKTTW", "I think this is a good idea" or "Yes, we should have this trope." and therefore, they'll hat one that is not ready to launch yet. That's why you can remove a hat someone else has given: to express the opinion that "This YKTTW is not ready to launch yet".
