Yu-Gi-Oh In General

DSOD doesn't have any cuts or censorship in the dub, just script changes. A ton of people who saw it say it's really, really good and well-acted and some of the changes make sense XD Kaiba's one-liners in particular were well-praised.

I think people like those changes because it's what they were used to with the dub to begin with, plus with the internet it's easier to find what was/wasn't altered. The main reason the movies are allowed to go darker than the TV edits is because you can get away with more in movies than on the Saturday morning cartoon block. I read a history of the Pokemon anime article and learned half of Pokemon's edits in the Kids WB era were mandated by the network, not the dubbing company, same with some Fox Kids anime.

Bonds Beyond Time's DVD had the dub and subs too. I was hoping DSOD would have both so then everyone would be happy unless you hated the movie to begin with XD

I know! That's why it baffles me that Arc V is as it is since its on cable.

Well, kids do watch cable......I am just sayin' and old habits die hard.

Yeah, they watch Yokai Watch, Beyblade and other less dumb anime stuff.Even Adult Swim catches more children than Arc V does. Which is sad since the original Arc V was even more smart and adult.

I hope and pray that one day they make their DSOD their policy and standard for dubbing. It has the usual 4kids shenanigans but also a much closer approach to the Japanese version.

The only way I'd forgive 4K is if they somehow revived Toonzai. And brought anime back for children.

4K had shown that can be serious and gritty if they wanted but the only way to convince 4K is throw money around.

You cant find that on Modern Yu Gi Oh dubs.

I was reading the manga and noticed a couple things that made me curious, especially in light of DSOD. DSOD accidentally (I think) implies that Yami Bakura didn't really exist, as it's explicitly the Ring, not a spirit in the Ring, that possesses Bakura pre-series, and corrupts Aigami and Mani post-series even though Yami Bakura/Zorc are dead/gone. If the Millennium Ring itself was evil in the past, and stayed evil even after Zorc and Yami Bakura are gone, it could mean that Yami Bakura never existed at all.

When Yugi and friends first meet YB in the manga they think Ryou is being a soul-stealing jerk and that it’s part of his personality brought out by the Ring, like what was thought to be happening with Yugi and the Puzzle. The manga-based Dungeon Dice Monsters and Monster Capsule GB video games had some precedent for this too, with YB being described as “Bakura, fallen under the dark spell of the Millennium Ring” and the Ring controlling Kaiba separately from Bakura. There’s also lines like this from the manga’s Battle City, which seem to go both ways.

Yami Yugi: Bakura’s real personality doesn’t have enough mental strength to withstand God’s attack!
Yugi: And I know the Millennium Ring and Ryo are two minds in one body, like us.
Tea: It wasn’t Ryo he was fighting, it was the Ring.
Joey: So the Millennium Ring’s other personality let you win? Then why expose Bakura’s real personality at all?
Yami Yugi: The mind in the Ring… I don’t know who or what he is, but he sacrificed himself for his host… Like me… Even if that Item is evil… we are alike.
Tea: Here’s his Ring. It took him over again… he keeps forgetting how dangerous it is to wear it!
Yugi: If the evil Bakura hadn’t come back we’d have lost rather than kill our friend!

It reminds me of a few fanfics I’ve read where Ryou went evil/mad, as well as ones where he was so suppressed or out of it it was like there was no Ryou at all.

On the other hand, according to Yami Bakura the losing player of the Shadow RPG would die, and while Atem does say that he should hold onto the ring as it housed evil for 3,000 years, on the next page he says “By the rules of the Shadow Game, Zorc’s evil has been destroyed.” Since anything fused with Zorc was Zorc, if it was just Ryou he would have died along with him, as well as Aknadin’s darkness. I also read that Mahad thought the Ring’s evil was from the PREVIOUS guy who wore it. Or that could be Zorc’s evil too. (Plus if it was the Ring being evil wouldn’t it have ‘died’ too?) XD

I think I’m way overthinking this and it was meant to be simpler than it looks XD; But it also makes me wonder what happened to Thief King Bakura once he sealed his soul with Zorc’s. I think the equation that makes the most sense is Zorc + Thief King Bakura x Ryou’s interests = Yami Bakura.

I was playing Reshef of Destruction and was amused at a part late in the game where Panik and the Mimic of Doom realize that just because they lost a duel, it doesn't mean they can't keep dueling until they win. Has any other villain thought of just dueling people over and over until they win? XD

Can they do that?

I mean, once you lose, it's usually instant shadow penalty time right? So even if they considered that, depending on who they were taking on (Yugi, Bakura, Marik) they'd get penaltied in the face first, because the rules are usually when you lose, you get penaltied, and no take backs!

That it's those two idiots who realize this makes it doubly funny.

Soo... I started to read the original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga out of curiosity and I am really liking it so far.

(Also I had the hilarious idea to play music from Mario Party during the Shadow Games)

It is a shame that this series hadn't continued featuring a game of the week for a little bit longer.

It might have resulted in Yugi playing an expy of a very grimdark tabletop war game.

Yusaku’s series is called Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS! (It’s a mix of ‘VR’ and ‘brains’.) It has a heavier focus on science than the other series so far, as Duels take place in cyberspace on hoverboards, and Yusaku gets a VR form that turns the blue parts of his hair gold! His signature monster is Decode Talker, who wields a broadsword.

I had a long time idea for a fic that was a combination of Yugioh and .hack that used a VR theme.

Looks like the writers kinda beat me to the VR part at least.

Does Decode Talker look too much like Buster Blader or is it just me?

So if I'm reading the latest ruling overhaul correctly, unless you start out with a Link monster you can only have a single Fusion/Synchro/XYZ/Ritual monster out on the field at a time? Doesn't that like, completely annihilate most decks and forces the entire card game to centralize heavily around Link and vanilla Effect monsters?

I had seen a lot of complaints about the quickening of the game's pace and the increasing complexity of its rules. Guess they're dialing it back.

Did they throw out Pendulum?

You know, that's pretty funny. The current series is set up to work with all other forms of summoning, while this new series makes it more difficult to use other forms of summoning.

It's like Pendulum and Link summoning (is that what it's called) are purposely being set up as opposites.
