Two literal Red Barons, one looking Badass.
The caption implies it became badass simply because it gained a nickname.
The thing is, it's not obvious from the picture in some form alone that implies that it became beefed up simply because it gained a nickname.
That, and the trope's about the character being so Badass that they gained a nickname for themselves. It's not about them becoming Badass simply by gaining a nickname.

. It's pretty obvious from the pictures that the things at the top of DK and Samus' respective mugshots are nicknames the WVBAnote gave them while the two fight within their arena.
