We were a grand colony, of over 500 smiling faces. Men, women and children all excited and dancing and drinking. We knew all about the new world. How it was full of opportunities and it would be built from the ground up off new and wonderful technology. The giant airship we flew in was a testament to that work. It was supposed to be the easiest thing in the world. Just get on, and go. Make your dreams come true. I saw a hustler in the streets lose his ticket to a child in a game of Blackjack.

I haven't a bit of an easier time than that getting on board. I'm very charming that way. Her name was Michelle. She was the most beautiful girl in the town. Her family was absolutely stacked...much like Ms. Michelle was. She adored me. Her family not so much. I guess the thought that a factory worker was stickin' it to their daughter didn't sit right with them. But I was happy enough. And it got me on the ship, soon as I had married her.

It was unlike anything I had ever seen. Like a giant boat in the sky or something. I pitied the poor bastards that had to work the underbelly. I would have been right there with them, face covered in soot and hands crunched up in the gears, just a year earlier. But I was one of the beautiful people now.

Not that I got to enjoy it much too long. We went down, fast. No warning or sign that something went wrong or anything. I was in bed, Michelle's body locked tightly in my arms. It couldn't have been later than 8 AM. And it was just a loud rumble, and then everything started shaking. People screaming, running around. Looking for their families and loved ones. The Captain said something over the intercom, but it was garbled, and everyone was panicking too much for me to hear.

I don't remember much more after that. There wasn't really any hope. The next thing that happened to me was coming to on the beach, coughing up a storm from all the smoke and salt getting in my throat. There were plenty of others washing up to the shore along with me. I must have spent 2 days in that wreckage, looking for Michelle.

I would have searched even longer, if the monster hadn't attacked.


So, this is an RP idea I've had stored for a while. A fantasy RP, in the context of a completely tropical setting, and the effect that has on the races, the flora, and the fauna. Sun, sand, jungles, pirates and strange beasts. All things to look forward here. Here is the signup to do some world building, show off the playable races and brainstorm idea with people who may be interested.

The setting is basically a chain of lots of small islands, inhabited by different magical races, and the conflict that arises from that. Think of the 1600s and 1700s, and the Golden Age Of Piracy. I'm not sure of what the exact plot will be just yet. I'm thinking maybe something about a Pirate captain looking for a new crew. Basically, you'll be able to play as any of the races I have listed.

Here are the playable races outlined:

    Humans 
Human colonies and port towns formed from the original shipwrecked survivors, recently revived and rejuvenated by traveling pirates and merchants.
  • No magic, but steampunk tech and primitive guns. Good at making things with inventive uses.
  • English and European accents.

     Maori Orcs 
The Maori are one of the oldest races on the island. Strong orcs raised on the ideals of strength and permanence, making a name for yourself.
  • Powerful magic where you grant yourself passive/persistent magical buffs/super powers through carefully chosen reagents and patterns of tattoowork.
  • New Zealand Accents.

     Jungle Elves 
Brown-skinned society of elves living in jungle cities built high in the trees. Begrudging peace with the Orcs and Lizardfolk. Very at one with nature.
  • Shamanistic magic that called upon the spirits and nature to change and shape the world around them. Uses dancing as a catalyst. Many of the Jungle Elves mix it with Capoeira or other dance battle techniques.
  • Australian Accents.

     Lizardfolk 
Chill and cheerful race of bipedal humanoids resembling different kinds of reptiles. Iquana is the most common, but there are also plenty of them with characteristics of sneaky chameleons, strong crocodiles, turtles, etc. A Merchant race, one of the only with maintained peace of all other races.
  • Use rogue like tactics, sneaking around and employing alchemy from powerful jungle plants and drugs to make potions.
  • Jamaican and Cajun accents

     Merfolk 
Gigantic undersea race of humanoids resembling different kinds of underwater creatures. Common fish people, like a Goldfish girl would be the most common, but there are also many branches such as Dolphin people or Octopus people. Overall, all the Merfolk consider themselves to be apart of one function undersea society. Inspired by Greek and Japanese culture and art.
  • Singing siren magic, close to psychic abilities for things like telekinesis or mind control.
  • Have a land form that grows legs out of the water.
  • Japanese accents, usually.

     Sharkin 
Shark-based ogres, originally part of the Merfolk society, but broke off after centuries of war. Large and powerful, not always bright. Usually ended up becoming pirates and bandits. Capital town is a half-above, half-underwater city made from a graveyard of wrecked ships.
  • Masters of survival. They get stronger the more they fight and eat. Amazing sense of smell.
  • Have a beast companion to fight and hunt with.
  • Like mating with humans. A lot.

     Avian 
Humanoid bird people, with similarities to Aztec culture. Wise and cultured race, the only other knowledge of the outside world besides the humans and lizards. Fear and worship many gods, and the powerful dragons that plague the islands.
  • Use Astrology as magic, reading knowledge of the stars, constellations and tides to achieve enlightenment powers and control over the body and mind, as well as see the future.
  • Grow wings to fly in puberty

     The Tiki 
Wooden golem race, born in ancient times. Resemble humans made of trees with Tiki heads, formed with ornate designs and symbols. The mystery of who created them is long forgotten, even by them. Now, they just look for their own purposes. Have more trouble understanding the other races than any other, but they are a curious folk. Feel compelled to guard sacred and secret lands, and protect nature.
  • Immune to the mental influence of the Merfolk, as well as water. Very strong and regenerate over time and can shift their form. Think Groot, but as a tiki.
  • Don't need to eat, but still sleep, but standing up.

So there you go, all the playable races. There are also plenty of strange island beasts and monsters in the setting. Gigantic butterfly mounts, spidersnakes, panthers that can turn invisible in shadow, etc. Important to note, are the gigantic powerful "dragons" that plague the lands, and can live either in volcanoes or deep in the sea. They look more like giant birds than reptiles.

  • Name: Dio Galeo
  • Gender: M
  • Age: 20
  • Race: Sharkin
  • Occupation: Bounty Hunter
  • Appearance: Dio is visually similar to a Tiger shark, standing around seven and a half feet tall. A dark stripe runs from the top of his eyes down to his spine, narrowing as it goes. He's obviously been beaten up a lot in life, as he's got a mess of scars across his jaw and down the front of his body. He's also obviously fought back—he's built up his fair share of muscle over the years and wears clothes that hang loose on his body to allow for ease of movement. Most of the time he just sticks to a loose cape and no shirt with a pair of shorts—helps establish a presence.
  • Personality: Dio tries to be friendly—because that's the most beneficial way to get ahead, for him. He understands that people acting like assholes will get treated as such until they fall back in line. He's a bounty hunter because he gets all his aggression out in a positive and constructive manner—something these men clearly failed to do. Unlike many Sharkin, he understands that violence doesn't need to involve physical force to still be violence. He's really responsive to criticism and disagreement, worrying about what could cause people to do so and trying to fix this whenever possible.
  • Assets:
    • Oscar, Dio's giant dachshund. Oscar is a dark brown dachshund, about five feet long and three feet high. He's trained in nonlethal takedown techniques and possesses enough force to break down doors and tackle adult men to the floor. He specializes in maneuvering in tight spaces and flushing people out into Dio's reach instead of fighting directly. Also specializes in receiving belly rubs from small children.
    • A crossbow that sits on a holster on Dio's left leg, designed to be quick-drawn and fired from the hip from short range. Has a few basic customizations so as to still be useful underwater.
    • A set of leather armor with thin metal plates on the shins, shoulders, and crotch, designed to defend against incidental damage while keeping Dio unencumbered.
    • A serrated whalebone knife Dio hides in his sleeve for, again, quick and sudden swipes from close range. Hurts going in, hurts even more coming out.
    • A cart that Oscar pulls from place to place with all the stuff you need to survive out in the wild. Oscar pulls it on land, then Dio converts it into a raft and tows Oscar if they need to cross to another island.
    • Several lengths of wire, perfect for tying up a captive.
    • Boots that have to weight like ten pounds each.
  • Skills, Magic and Abilities:
    • Full knowledge of the complex infrastructure that surrounds bounty hunting and mercenary work—he knows how to get people jobs and how to turn them in correctly.
    • Dio's real strong, man.
    • Skilled in hand-to-hand combat designed to blitz a target with rapid strikes to leave them injured, dazed, and uncomfortably alive.
    • As skilled with swimming as any other Sharkin.
  • Bio: Dio grew up in his people's capital city, in the middle of the city where the real estate was real expensive. Like most Sharkin he grew up in a situation of constant conflict—in this case his parents' dealings as landlords to the slightly worse buildings above them—the ones where it was sort of a pain in the ass to climb downstairs every day to get submerged. Strangely enough, Dio still received the same education in nice private schools and around landshark(ha) parents as he would have in the inner city: the world is regulated through mutual acts of violence. He understood that, unfortunately, that was how the world was kept in line. He didn't like it, but he understood that that was the best way to do things. When he went to shore in search of an animal companion, he met Oscar, an agent of disruptive chaos, a beautiful dog that disrupted badgers in their burrows and eviscerated them as they scattered. Oscar showed him that that careful equilibrium could be disrupted by his own violence, and just... left one night, taking everything he'd need for awhile in the general direction of the nearest bounty hunters' association where he might be able to get some work. That was about 7 years ago, and since then work's been steady, but tedious—Dio's having trouble believing that he's actually doing anything to combat the spread of violence on the islands.

  • Name: Sylfarina Greenshade
  • Gender: Female
  • Age: 82
  • Race: Jungle Elf
  • Occupation: Druid/Huntress/Survivalist
  • Appearance: Into the Wilds With this Color of Hair. Additionally, her body is covered in thin, little clear scars from moving through the vegetation in light garments. The thin likes all over her body somewhat resemble a tiger's stripes.
  • Personality: Syl is a free spirited and feral child of the jungles and sea. Only occasionally venturing into civilization, she spends most of her time alone or with hunters and her druid companions. She's a curious soul, more than willing to test her limits and live for the thrill of the hunt and survival. However, she tempers these impulses with a caution born of survival instinct and the many pains she has endured living as she does. Syl can appear uncultured and savage to those living in civilization however, she is a clever woman who can make sense of concepts quickly if she's introduced to them, at least on a simple level and intuitive level.
  • Assets: Sylfarina isn't one to have too many possessions to her name, though through the years she has gathered a certain amount of tools and items to aid in her life of jungle survival. She has a few 'bases' scattered around a few islands, mostly consisting of nice places on the wilderness where there is a somewhat safe place to sleep plus a small stash of supplies. In them she has daggers carved out of rock or the teeth of predators, spears tipped in a similar way, some dry food, healing salves, useful herbs, anti poison and small carved charms. On the island of the Jungle Elves she has a small tree house with an improvised bed and some other knick knacks, such as rope, talismans, some scrolls, trophies of kills, wooden carvings, a bow and arrows and some gathered pearls. Finally at Papa Silfas home, she has a more normal room reserved for her, with a chest containing civilized clothes, some money, a necklace, a staff, wooden mask and some other personal belongings.
  • Skills, Magic and Abilities:
    • Shapeshifting: Through her druidic magic and dance, Sylfarina can transform into any animal whose dance she has learned how to perform. The dances depend on the movement of the animal and their particular essence... you can learn an animal's dance without studying them, however it is more difficult. Knowing and interacting with an animal can lead you to learn their dance and become able to turn into them if you got the druidic skills for it.
    • Animal Mimicry: A derivate of druidic shapeshifting which Sylfarina has developed due to her lifestyle of interaction with nature and its fauna. At any moment, Sylfarina can have up to five animal characteristics in her elven form, which allow her to draw onto traits of animals to improve her form. Usually, Syl has a wolves' nose, an ape's ability to use her feet as hands, and a cat's claws for climbing, leaving two free characteristics depending on the situation.
    • Druidic Magic: Although Syl has concentrated on animal shapeshifting in her druidic training to the point of neglecting other arts, she remains capable of spellcasting and communing with nature. She can affect plans to move out of her way and aid her in little ways, such as drawing vines towards her hands to swing through the jungle, not leaving tracks on the grass and having tree leaves hide her when up on them. She has a lot of knowledge of plant and animal life, being able to size up the power of an animal or the use of a herb. She can sense the weather and with enough preparation and rituals perhaps affect it a little bit. She can cast faerie lights and other such minor druidic magics, such as shaping wood or reinforcing with nature magic a staff or other such things.
    • Elven Senses: Sylfarina can see in the dim light of the night as if it were day and in pure darkness up to a close distance. Her long ears are keen and able to perceive noises that may be imperceptible to humans.
    • Savage Child: Syl is a skilled survivalist, living her life fighting the elements, animals and other dangers with nothing more than her improvised weapons, traps, druidic magic and her body. She's adept at moving in the wilds, can climb dangerously fast and move quietly and quickly. She's quite agile, with quick reflexes and a bit stronger than her scrawny build would suggest. She knows how to lay traps and make weapons out of what's available in nature, wielding them with surprising skill and ferocity.
Bio: Sylfarina was once a jungle elf just like all others. Living in the tree top society of their extensive nature worshiping cities. Howerver, one day when she was barely out of toddler age, her parents were involved in a tragic accident which claimed their lives and left the young girl an orphan. While traveling in boat through a river, a sudden storm caused disaster, which Sylfarina only survived by having her dad place her on the tall branches of a waterside tree before slipping and falling into the dangerous rapids. Her only living family was a far off cousin of the druidic tradition who took her in and raised her, Aruel. Aruel did her best to protect the child while she kept practicing her veneration of nature... and seeing the girl's natural talent at the arts eventually took her to Papa Silfas, one of the greatest druids alive to introduce her to the arts and further train her. Many years later, Sylfarina has stuck out alone into the wilds... her bonds with civilization fleeting at best, as she dove out of her early life grief by turning to the wonder of the natural world and the animals living in it. She lives her life now in freedom, pursuing new experiences and challenges. She moves between the islands, sometimes in a small canoe, sometimes swimming and sometimes in an aquatic animal's form, in order to explore them and retrieve treasures from them. Tasty fruit, chasing a new and exciting animal, exploring new trees and mountains... it is all a great adventure to this still young elf.

Quite a bit slower. Here are the age ranges for the races:

  • Humans: 70-80 years
  • Jungle Elves: 400-500 years
  • Maori Orcs: 80-120 years
  • Lizardfolk: 120-150 years
  • Merfolk: 200-300 years
  • Sharkin: 100-200 years
  • Avian: 400-500 years
  • Tiki: Thousands of years

Occupation Olivier calls himself a "love doctor" but really what he does is flip some tarot and sell cheap love charms; for a price though, he can tell your real fortune, and make twenty seven different types of potion

Appearance Classic "werecrocodile" with dark green skin, and big yellow eyes. He has several silver piercings in his tail. He is rubbing up against eight feet tall.

Personality Olivier is a big ol' lizard, with the personality to match. He is quite the showman, and few get to know what's behind the mysterious and shady persona. He has a booming laugh and loves to show it off; Olivier is sweet but his appearance can be off-putting, to say the least. He does, however, know a lot of people, and several of them are very good friends, who appreciate his cheer and honesty (usually).

Skills/abilities/magics

  • Potioneering- Olivier is an accomplished potioneer, even for a lizard, and this extend to even making small powder-bombs and various alcohols
    • Olivier's own dangerous potions, drugs, and poisons will not work on himself, having purposefully created a resistance so that his creations couldn't be used against him
  • Fighting- Growing up on a dangerous side of the island, Olivier picked up some serious fighting chops to protect himself and his stuff. He is very god at fighting with his serrated knife in one hand, and a foul smelling hallucination-inducing torch in the other
  • Due to his reptilian nature, Olivier is comfortable in and out of the water, though, being a bit picky about his appearance, he prefers out.

Bio Olivier was born in a swamp to a big family. He never fit in with their backwoods life, and though he loved his mama, the only things he ever got from her were a knack for cooking and a knack for brewing. When he was about 15, he ran off to one of the port towns, and became apprenticed to a weird Avian fortune teller. Thirteen years, a marriage, a house fire, and two boyfriends later, Olivier inherited the shop when his teacher died. Just before passing though, his teacher gave him an old Avian circular tablet with several divinatory secrets. Not being able to read most of it, Olivier was still able to figure out enough to develop a potion to tell the future' still searching for something new, the Avian disc is one of Olivier's biggest secrets. This newfound ability got Olivier into trouble with some very powerful members of the community, somehow running him afoul of both a Sharkin gang and a wealthy human family at the same time, so he packed up what he could, sold what he couldn't, and got the hell out of dodge. Travelling around ever since, Olivier has been to many places, and been many things, from doctor to hired muscle to, one time, lawyer, but mostly trying to help out where- and how- ever he can. He does miss being settled down, but values his here-today-gone-tomorrow lifestyle more than anything but good food.

  • Occupation: Priest of his namesake goddess
  • Appearance:Ready to defend his faith.
  • Personality: Itzpapalotl is a very laidback and sarcastic man about normal matters, but when it comes to the spiritual he becomes much more serious. He takes his faith to fanatic levels even for an avian race. He is evangelical about his faith always trying to convert others to the ways of the Obsidian Butterfly.
  • Assets:
    • His ceremonial obsidian dagger, carved with glyphs praising Itzpapalotl and recounting her legends
    • His spear
    • A small stone marked with a detailed astral calendar to keep track of which magics he can effect
    • Padded cloth armor
  • Skills, Magic, and Abilities:
    • Minor claivoyance, able to remotely view objects or persons he or someone he is in physical contact with knows along with the ability to with a couple rituals and sacrifices, to look a day or so into the future
    • Has tattoos which draw on the constellation of the Obsidian Butterfly to give himself minor control over the wind
    • Can use his astrological knowledge to give himself traits of the constellations ruling the day, for example if the ruling constellation was the Serpent, he could gift himself with increased flexibility or a poisoned bite
    • Flight, is strong enough to carry one other being around his size
    • Detailed theological knowledge about the gods of the Isles
  • Bio: Itzpapalotl was named after the Obsidian Butterfly, the goddess he would be sworn to serve as soon as he became an adult. Raised in the temple he had no real knowledge of his parents, instead his entire life was devoted to the goddess and her ways. As he reached adulthood, he was sworn into the inner mysteries and sent out into the world until he could bring back some new knowledge to add to the temple, as were dozens of other young priests. He has since proved to be the most unlucky of his generation and has yet to find some artifact of worth to bring back, yet he continues his quest.

Definitely interested. Am thinking an ork because I love Polynesian culture in general and Maori in specific. Thinking of a sort of holy warrior, more monk than paladin dedicated to protecting his people and distrustful of the colonists.

  • Name: Glaukon of Critias
  • Gender: Male
  • Age: 31
  • Race: Merfolk
  • Occupation: Hoplite
  • Appearance: Glaukon is youthful, with a chiseled form, golden eyes, and pale skin. His hair is dark brown, wild, and somewhat long. From his waist up he resembles a young man around 19. From the waist down, his tail resembles that of a sea bass, and is covered in silvery scales, the fin spiked and fanning out widely. On land, his tail turns into a pair of legs, that look like he is wearing long, scaly pants, with webbed feet. He has a spiky fanned fin (much like a fish's dorsal fin) on each forearm. Outside of combat he usually wears a simple white chiton. In a fight, he wears orichalcum armor (see Assets).
  • Personality: Glaukon is energetic, cheerful, and competitive, as well as a bit of a flirt. He often rushes ahead without thinking, even though he means well. He also has a tendency to put his metaphorical foot in his mouth. Nonetheless, he is a stalwart warrior, even if he isn't necessarily a skilled one quite yet. As a soldier in the Critian army, he attempts to be noble and become a hero. He believes that if he can accomplish this, he will be able to pass into a warrior's paradise when he dies. When not in combat, he is restless, but nonetheless he enjoys music (like most merfolk).
  • Assets: Glaukon's most prized possessions are his suit of orichalcum armor and his spear. Every soldier from the city-state of Critias gets one of these suits of armor. Orichalcum is a magical and lightweight metal, said to be stronger than steel. In addition, weapons made of orichalcum slice through water as easily as a bronze weapon slices through air. Glaukon's armor and weapons are all made of this metal.
    • His weapons include his prized spear, his xiphos shortsword, throwing knives, and a net.
    • His armor usually consists of simply an orichalcum chestplate. Occasionally, he will wear a helmet and carry a large round shield. However, since the shield is heavy, he usually leaves it at home when he travels abroad.
    • In addition, he also carries with him a lyre. Since one of his passions is music, he has taught himself to play the lyre in addition to his singing.
  • Skills, Magic and Abilities: Glaukon, like all merfolk, has the ability to use his voice to touch the hearts and minds of others. He prefers not to do this, however (unless a pretty girl is involved). He is much more comfortable with his weapons. He is still a low-ranking hoplite, however, so while he is very proficient with a spear and a xiphos, he's not as good with them as he'd like to be. Nonetheless, he is very athletic, able to swim for miles without getting exhausted, and he has near-boundless energy.
  • Bio: Glaukon hasn't spent much time on the islands at all. His home is beneath the sea, in the merfolk city-state of Critias. He was born and raised in the city-state, and even as a young child he wanted to become a war hero. When he turned 28 (roughly equivalent to 16), he enlisted into the Critian army. He has only been in the army for a few years, however, and thus he has not been promoted yet. Still, his energy and passion for his work convinced his superiors to assign him and a few other hoplites to scout the coastlines of the islands, protecting them from danger. Glaukon isn't particularly fond of this assignment but it does let him go onto land and explore the strange new places that have been opened up to him.

I can still hail the Horde even though the company has shamed us. Strength and Honor even if Blizzard has neither.

Octopus Merfolk

Occupation: Salvager

Physical description: Blue rings on her skin, three tentacles on each side, otherwise looks like a normal woman.

Personality: Extremely driven, she has "keep up with the boys" attitude that is rather necessary in her profession. She spends a lot of her free time on dry land in the local tavern, playing various gambling games.

Bio: Every now and then a ship sinks in the islands, and when it does, salvagers are there to rescue survivors and pick up wreckage to sell. Auria leads a small team of salvagers who pull in cargo, and make quite a good living doing it. She prefers to live on land, and has a large house on one of the human islands. While on land, she wears a green toga, and has a leather outfit that protects her from sharp wreckage and steel axe that she uses to cut apart debris while on the job.
