I'd had the idea that Ida might see expulsion or some other punishment for his actions (or, more specficially, the motivations behind them). Though I can't see such a thing with Deku or Todoroki since they were acting out of altruism more than anything.

The /a/-thread just got visited by a friendly translator-fag: They normally would get expelled for unauthorized use of their quirks, but due to there being few witnesses the officials will sweep it under the rug if they keep quiet about it.

>>Since the dawn of quirks, we the police have resolved not to make use of quirks in the face of violent confrontations.
>>Out of our dedication to strict rules of engagement, and pride in our system.
>>"Heroes" were a byproduct that mitigated our handicap.
>>So here we have law enforcers that could wield awesome powers. And easily lethal powers - according to their own assessment of the situation.
>>The very notion could've been shunned and ousted, but it was and remains an accepted norm.
>>Thanks to none other than the fine conducts set by your predecessors.
>>So for you three apprentice heroes:
>>Using quirks to harm another person, without the direct supervision of your mentors - that person being a serial perpetrator notwithstanding - constitutes a serious breach of the law!
>>I'm therefore obligated - to enforce due penalty
>>To Endeavour, Manuel, Gran Torino, and of course you three

[...]

>>That, will be my official position as a police officer.
>>But, only if the matter goes public.
>>If this incident hits the press. You'll receive demerits against your record, even if the public hails you as heroes
>>On the other hand, if this story remains quiet. The media will draw its own conclusion and link his burns to Endeavour.
>>Fortunately there were limited witnesses to the event.
>>The police department can keep this under wraps, as long as no one probes.

[up] So basically it's not so much that they would get expelled so much as there would be a permanent stain on their records if it goes public. Taking everything into account it's reasonable, I think. Breaking the law is serious business, but it'd be ridiculous to not give the kids a break for managing to salvage that situation.

And the realistic dog heads name basically translates to "Looks like a dog".

If I'm understanding what's happening, I have to agree with Arha on this one.

Damn. I was hoping people would start following up with silly responses like short, tall, big, small, etc.

Ah well.

I kinda do agree, but since I'm a pansy who didn't want anyone to die, I'm glad that's how it went.

Deku's comment at the end of the chapter does suggest that this is supposed to lead to something else, which will likely tie into the whole wanting to stop Iida I hope. Either that or him or the editors had things changed so nothing bad truly happened.

Probably. I admit, I'm still torn on how I want things to go.

Considering how devoted Stain is, I keep expecting him to give Iida a surprise shanking the moment the kid is alone.

Oh gosh I can only imagine the fury Stain will have once he realizes they fabricated the story of Endeavor beating him. He might even have a Fake Detector because he someone knew on instinct Endeavor is a fake.

Well, I admit I would have been disappointed is the much-foreshadowed "consequences" were already over. But I guess this will be a more long-term thing. That police boss has some serious Uncanny Valley going on, though. And Todoroki has definitely entered his rebel phase, though it's nice to see how Midoriya's brand of heroism has rubbed off on him. :P

I have to say this translation, specifically Todoroki's dialogue, was not very impressive.

  • Todoroki saying stuff like "dude", "kickass", "shit"
  • All those awful dog puns

My God, that was fucking painful to read.

I don't know what's worse. Woof at the end of every sentence in the original version, the fact that his name is a pun about his face being a dog, that they translated him having dog puns instead, or the realistic dog head.

The school principal at least isn't realistic despite being an animal that gained a quirk (And sentience).

Yeah, that was some serious Uncanny Valley there.

I would prefer the "woofs" anyway. They could get annoying but those dog puns were cringey as hell. Fortunately I don't see him being a regular cast soon. Also, everyone has Punny Name in this series, except Deku.

My main complaint with the translation is really Todo's OOC dialogue though. Stuff like "dude", "kickass" ''really'" doesn't fit him. It makes him sound friendlier than he is. Something similar also happened, what with a goody-two-shoes like Deku saying "fuck" in his sentences during the sports festival tournament.

I get it that the translator prefers liberal over literal translation (I myself prefer the latter), but changing a character's personality is like, one the big no-nos in translating stories.

Excuse me for the rant.

[up]While I was reading I was wondering if the puns were actually there (not those exactly but still dog puns that work in Japanese) or if that was just the translator. I get their reasoning, but, yeah, I would have just preferred "woof" at the end of every sentence, if they felt like they had to include something. And I also agree with you're point about Todoroki and Deku's dialogue, though I think going more for nuance over literal translations is generally the better move.

And Deku's more normal name is sort of a pun in that it's supposed to reflect how he doesn't (initially) have a power. So, not really a pun, but still serves the same function.

[up][up]Not looking into the scanlations myself, but if you're referring to Fallen Angel's one... When Viz added the series to the English magazine, the translator was very blunt about their liberal translations and said to go to the Viz version if you wanted a literal one.

It's possible to be either too literal or too liberal with translations. Going too far in either direction defeats the point of translating the first place.

Some things just don't translate well, and that's fine, but this guy sometimes seems to be having too much fun for their own good.

Generally I'm pro-very liberal translation, though it's true it's easy to let them get out of hand. But literal translations seem so stilted and unnatural...
