Zeus. Amaterasu. Thor. All mighty heroes or, in many cases, Gods of ages past. But in recent times, these once mighty beings have become little more than old stories and fables, with hardly any people left that believe they truly existed. And yet, exist they did, in millennia long past, when their belief was at it's height. And now, today, they exist again, though not as before. Something is causing these beings to manifest within the bodies of ordinary men and women; in others words, reincarnations. These reincarnations only posses a fraction of the power of the original beings, though that power is still something to behold. But as they begin to stir, the forces responsible for this revival stir as well. In the end, it will remain to be seen whether humanity's belief in the Gods will rise to heights only seen in ages past, or if it will continue to remain as it long has. Or if, perhaps, something else will occur...

Hey there! This is an RP that is Exactly What It Says on the Tin. For a reason not known to you at first, beings of myth, including Gods, demigods, heroes, etc, are all being reborn within ordinary humans beings. (Well, mostly human beings; more on that later.) As for how the reincarnation process works; all reincarnations start out as completely ordinary humans, though there may be a subconscious inkling of their past life from time to time. But at the beginning of the RP, the Myth sleeping inside awakens, if only somewhat. You still have all of your human memories, but the personality and memories of your Myth begin to 'graft' themselves onto your human self; whether you attempt to push back your mythical self, or instead let the inner myth overtake you completely, is up to you, though either approach you take is going to steadily happen over time, as will the 'grafting' of your inner myth.

In addition, mythological races and locations will begin to crop up as the myths continue to be restored, and rather quickly at that. As the RP begins, the first signs of people transforming into mythological creatures and beings will already be evident, and so will be the transformation of the city of New Olympus from a modern metropolis, into a place of myth. Much of the city's populace will be transformed into mythological creatures, with the difference from you lot being that these creature's minds are much more instinctive and/or primal, and so their transformations are much more instant and complete.

Going back to your own Inner Myths, let me make this clear: the host is dominant at first. The Inner Myth can still communicate with the host within the host's mind, and can also communicate with other Inner Myths, but it cannot take direct action, aside from the odd spell or two. Again, you can either suppress the Inner Myth or the host gradually, but doing either will take time. Or you can just keep the relationship the same. Additionally, Inner Myths can communicate with one another, but only if they're aware of each other's presence.

It goes without saying that beings of myth had supernatural or, well, Godly abilities. Since your inner Myths have only just reawakened, and also due to the current lack of belief at the moment, your abilities are severely limited by comparison, though they're still on par with your average Superhero. (Which don't exist in this universe prior to now, but you get the idea.) For example, if your inner Myth is Zeus, you could throw lightning bolts out of your hands, or if it's Demeter, you would have control over plant life. Starting out, you would all be at the '3' mark on the Sliding Scale of Superpowers, but if the RP goes on long enough, your levels of power may increase over time.

Also, all hosts of Inner Myths, not counting hosts of creatures such as centaurs, minotaurs, tengus, etc., are able to speak directly with their Inner Myth; that is, they can communicate with them within the host's own mind. All you have to do is think something, and the Inner Myth can hear it, and respond in kind.

Finally, here's a Character Sheet.

  • Inner Mythological Being:
  • Human Name:
  • Human Gender:
  • Human Age:
  • Appearance:
  • Powers and/or Abilities:
  • Personality of Inner Myth:
  • Personality of Human Being
  • Background of Inner Mythological Being:
  • Background of Human Being:
  • Miscellaneous:

Earlier, I mentioned that reincarnations would mostly be human. I'm willing to let one or two players play as an animal instead, though most should still be human. Also, while Mythological beings are up for grabs, there are a few that are off limits; God, Jesus, and Satan. For starters, they still hold quite a lot of belief these days, but aside from that, we're not having any God Mode Sues. (And lastly, for the purposes of this RP, the Roman Pantheon is also off-limits. However, their original Greek Counterparts are still fully available, along with all other heroes and legends of Greek myth. If you really want to use a Roman God though, PM me; I'm sure we could work something out.) If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Also, a note about the setting. The RP takes place in New Olympus, Minnesota, where a relatively new company that's been making waves lately, Pantheon Incorporated is based out of. So far, what they've actually put out is solid, if underwhelming, but they've been developing a slew of new projects that have got people talking. Hologram projectors, flying cars, video-phones, etc. Of course, none of this fancy new technology has been finished or released, according to Pantheon; almost as if it's all just a front for some other purpose. They've also got mercenaries and other 'hired help' on the company payroll, not that most of the public knows. (Which they don't.)

EDIT: Also, if you're having trouble thinking of a Myth to use, there's the Godchecker, which contains essential information on dozens of deities from at least 26 different regions, if not more. It could come in handy. And lastly, Sign-ups are open indefinitely. If you haven't joined by the time the game's started, don't worry; you can join up at any time.

[up]1.0 went kaput when I got too busy with the play I'm currently in to properly attend an RP. Though the lack of players didn't help.tongue But in just two weeks, the play'll be done, and I can GM again. With that in mind, the remaining players cast their votes; 2 for relaunch, and 2 for haitus. I broke the tie, opting for a relaunch. If you want more details, you can check out the old discussion thread, but the important thing is that we're starting afresh, with a more direct beginning and more brisk progression of events in mind. (Not referring to posting rates at all, by the way. I know people have lives; heck, I've been pretty busy myself. Post when you want, and I'll be sure to keep the posting rate from going too fast. However, the actual progression of events in the RP, whatever those turn out to be, should be smooth sailing.)

I do have an offbeat idea in mind (and I do mean offbeat), but I need a question answered before I flesh it out. What time of year is it when the RP starts?

Here's Typhon.

  • Inner Mythological Being: Typhon.
  • Human Name: Tyson Fowler
  • Human Gender: Male
  • Human Age: 24
  • Appearance: A fit, broad-shouldered and tanned young man with short dark hair and dark brown eyes. He has a scar running from below his right eye to his jaw from an old knife fight. He usually wears dark clothes, and has taken to wearing loose clothes and sleevless shirts because of his newfound abilities. Stands about 6' and weighs about 180 lbs.
  • Powers and/or Abilities:
    • Massive Might: When he uses his other abilities (except Father of All Monsters), he grows slightly bigger, up to a foot taller than he normally is. Tyson is noticeably stronger and tougher than a normal man in this increased state, capable of resisting knives and, with effort, flipping cars. He shrinks down again when he stops actively using his other powers.
    • Hundred Dragon Heads: Typhon was said to have one hundred heads: one human head, and 99 dragon or serpent heads. Tyson can, at first, manage to summon two heads, sprouting from his shoulders. They can bite fairly hard, have sharp teeth, and are long and prehensile. They follow Tyson's will, and can be used like an additional pair of arms.
    • Flashing Eyes of Flame: Tyson can shoot fireballs from his eyes (for now, only from his human eyes). Initially they are roughly the size of baseballs and cause small explosions on impact.
    • Wings:A pair of black, feathery wings that sprout from Tyson's back, enabling him to fly, which is slightly faster than the speed he can run. He's still a bit clumsy in the air.
    • Father of All Monsters: As the sire of numerous legendary beasts, all creatures recognize the presence of Typhon and cower. Most animals will shy away from Tyson, and even humans will find something weird about him. Those of divine blood can recognize Tyson as a reincarnation very easily.
  • Personality of Inner Myth: Typhon is more or less perpetually pissed off. He has a short temper, and will insist that Tyson solve all problems with the use of excessive force. The prescence of his children or wife/niece (Greek Mythology, what'll ya do) Echinda will calm him. Should he discover an Olympian god, however...
  • Personality of Human Being: To put it in the simplest terms, Tyson does not care. The only thing he really puts concerted effort into is his job, and that's just because he has to pay his bills somehow. He's otherwise lazy, and not particularly respectful of anyone. Sarcasm is a particular talent of his,
  • Background of Inner Mythological Being: The last son to be born from Gaia, Typhon was also the fiercest. In retribution for sealing away his siblings, the Titans, Typhon battled with Zeus. Though the Olympians feared him, Zeus stood his ground and finally bound Typhon with one hundred lightning bolts. Though locked away in Tartarus, Typhon was still said to be responsible for burning winds and earthquakes, his rage emanating from the pits of the Earth.
  • Background of Human Being: Tyson is a man of little importance or talent. He's just skated by for most of his life, never finding anything he particuarly was good at or cared for. Except fighting - he got into quite a few scuffles in his schooling days, which didn't help in the 'getting friends' department. He never went to college, lives in a tiny apartment, and has worked at a fast food joint since high school. Discovering his divine powers has only served to exasperate him.

Awww! Typhon sounds too close to Lotan! Guess Erinn's a no-go then if we want to keep these myths distinct. -___-

I'll use another character I was considering. You might recognize him, KK.

Inner Mythological Being: Prometheus

Human Name: Doctor (Professor) Mason Nathaniel Meade

Human Gender: Male

Human Age: 47

Appearance: Average height (5'7") and slim (138 lbs) due to a sparse diet, Dr. Meade has a sort of sickly look to him even though he's quite healthy. His pasty skin and fermented wrinkles make him look like he has spent the past few years locked in his apartment, which isn't far from the truth. Today however, he is dressed to the nines in a pinstripe suit and sporting a William Clark Gable hairstyle, sketchy moustache and all.

Powers/Abilities: For now, Prometheus gives Dr. Meade three powers:

  • Summoning Fire: Mason's primary form of offense. He can summon flames and fireballs to throw at his enemies. The fire must travel from Meade to the target; he cannot, for example, snap his fingers and have an enemy spontaneously combust.
  • Summoning Light: Generally used as a distraction/means of escape, though it could be very effective against enemies accustomed to darkness. Creates a sudden flash of light that blinds those who look at it directly. Consider it a supernatural flashbang.
  • Regeneration: Dr. Meade's wounds can heal over the course of a day, whether they be paper cuts or lost limbs. I must stress that this process requires a full night to pass in order to work, and that it will not replace any fluids lost in the meantime. If Mason loses an arm, he can easily die from blood loss before the arm comes back. This ability also does not protect him from pestilence or disease.

Personality of Inner Myth: Prometheus is a compassionate and sacrificial being who chose the betterment of mortals over the tyranny of the gods. He has a very strong sense of justice and mercy, though his position as a prisoner prevents him from acting on these passions. He has a habit of standing against authority when he witnesses injustice, even if it means he can only protest.

Personality of Human: Meade seems mentally unstable, at least in an emotional sense. He is incredibly reclusive and self-interested, considering himself a narcissistic hedonist. While he is a very intelligent man, his rationality could hardly be called consistent; he'll use Nietzsche to justify one act and Hobbes to justify another. Meade is convinced that the voice in his head claiming to be Prometheus is not the mythical Titan, nor are any of the other beings popping up really divine. He thinks that all the strange changes going on are part of a fascinating singularity, but they are not driven by gods. Divinity implies superiority to the human race, which Meade's ego refuses to acknowledge as possible. Meade uses this premise to justify abusing Prometheus; this "god" has leeched onto his body, and if it wants to stick around it should give Meade unlimited access to its powers and shut its f@#&ing mouth.

Background of Mythological Being: Prometheus was one of the Titans who supported Zeus during the battle against Cronus, which is why he was not thrown in Tartarus with his brethren once Zeus took the throne. However, Prometheus found Zeus' treatment of mortals inexcusable, so in two acts of subtlety he tricked Zeus into accepting the inedible parts of cattle to be used as sacrifice, and stole fire from Olympus and gave it to humanity. Prometheus was praised by mortals, but his deceit enraged Zeus. The Lord of Olympus had Prometheus chained to Kazbek Mountain, where an eagle would eat his liver every day, only for it to grow back every night to be eaten again in the morning. While Hercules eventually rescued Prometheus as part of his twelve trials, for the sake of this RP he will still be trapped on the mountain.

Background of Human: Mason Meade was a brilliant student of literature and philosophy, and received several doctorates in those fields. Up until last year, Dr. Meade was a philosophy teacher at Athena University in New Olympus, arguably the most respected college in the city. However, Meade was fired when he was caught having an affair with one of his students. A male student. Since then Meade has been living off of writing freelance articles in academic magazines and his dwindling life savings. Meade started hearing Prometheus about ten days ago, and has come to the conclusion that the world is at the precipice of great change; people will start going mad and society as everyone knew it will collapse. Still very spiteful about being fired, Meade sees this revolution as a way to get ahead in the world; a way to make a name for himself and gain more power and respect than he could ever get as a teacher. In short, Dr. Meade wants to use this catastrophe to become a king of gods.

  • Inner Mythological Being: Chaos
  • Human Name: Nico Maddox
  • Human Gender: Male
  • Human Age: 18
  • Appearance: Nico is a tall and lanky but reasonably muscular teen, with originally blonde hair dyed purple and clear blue eyes. He typically wears sports clothing in darker colours. He has a long celtic knot pattern tattoo which curves around both of his shoulders and down his back.
  • Powers and/or Abilities:
    • Origin Sense: Nico can naturally sense inner myths and potentially identify them.
    • Void Form: Nico can invoke a transformation. While it is active, he hovers slightly above the ground when standing still, has blank black eyes and seems to occasionally blink in and out of existence but it has no real utility other than minor levitation.
    • Chaos static: Nico can mess with reality within a small sphere. This causes random light and sound within that area and will cause disturbances to people's thoughts if they are caught within it.
  • Personality of Inner Myth: Chaos is highly mysterious, seeming to know a lot but tell very little. She is normally mellow and friendly but when enraged a harsh ferocity is uncovered. She is generally proud of both the gods and humanity that came after her, reveling in their strength and purpose.
  • Personality of Human Being: On the most obvious level, Nico is a rebel, hating authority and seeming to do whatever people tell him not to. He cares strongly for individuality and thinks that there is no point to life if he doesn't express it. Beyond that, he is immensely curious, being very contemplative and philosophical and just wanting to not just know but understand what's really happening.
  • Background of Inner Mythological Being: Chaos is the first god, the mother of reality. She is the embodiment of the void and therefore does not have much real power but rather is significant because she represents nothing.
  • Background of Human Being: Nico was born into a rich but boring family, his parents expecting highly of him but not really caring what he did. He became highly rebellious, purposefully getting in trouble and reveling in counter-culture. In school he studied just enough to get by, never really being interested in any of it and just wanting to find something more meaningful. With the discovery of Chaos inside him, he seems to have found that.

The reason I asked is my character concept is based around a college student (one, who after seeing Theodore Hastings's post, will be enrolled in Athena University). So I kind of need to know if class is in session or not.

It would probably be easier if not, which would probably set this some time during summer break.

[up] Well, given the circumstances of the RP, it probably doesn't matter if school is in session or not. People are going to start hearing voices in their heads and transforming into mythical beasts—not all of which are intelligent. With everyone losing their minds, I doubt your character will have to worry about studying for his/her history midterm. [lol]

Fair enough, although it would be nice having a confirm from the GM. Either way, here's the character.

Inner Mythological Being: Nidaba (Sumerian goddess of writing and learning)
Human Name: Sarah Kellerton
Human Gender: Female
Human Age: 21
Appearance: A short and slightly overweight young woman who prefers denim clothes (both jeans and jacket). She has black medium-length hair, which is messy more often than not. She also has a distinctive lip piercing.
Powers/Abilities: All of her powers are tied to written text.

  • Ultimate Translation: Any written text in instantly understandable to her, regardless of what language it is written in. This seems to not be very useful, but as it turns out, this somehow includes programming languages. Coupled with her prior studies in computer science, this makes Sarah into an incredibly gifted programmer and hacker.
  • Authorship Knowledge: Any time Sarah reads any written text, she automatically knows exactly who originally wrote it, be it one person or a team of people. If the text was transcribed or edited, she will know the identities of those people too. This means that online aliases don't work, and she knows exactly who those supposedly clever trolls are. tongue
  • Perfect Memory: Finally, Sarah will never forget any thing written down that she reads, no matter how long ago it was.
Personality of Inner Myth: As a scribe to the Sumerian gods, Nidaba is normally calm and thoughtful. However, she loves new books and stories, and can be, er, quite enthusiastic about reading them. She is loyal and dutiful to those she trusts, especially to Enki (Sumerian god of wisdom) due to him appointing her to her position as scribe.
Personality of Human Being: Sarah is very enthusiastic and outgoing, and more than a little geeky. Her one problem is that she is not the most patient sort; when she wants something, she tends to want it right away. She loves video games, and her goal (at least originally) was to get a job working for a game developer.
Background of Inner Mythological Being: The scribe of the gods appointed by Enki, Nidaba's job was to record the doings of the gods. In a sense, she was also the divine secretary, helping sort out the mortals who would petition the gods for aid. She also helped to teach both gods and mortals about writing and various other things of importance. In the end, her student Nabu usurped her role as scribe to the gods (a fact she is still a little bitter about).
Background of Human Being: Sarah Kellerton lived a fairly normal life in suburbia. Her parents divorced when she was 12, but she adjusted (mostly) to it, living with her mother. Due to being an only child, as well as the divorce, her young desires - mostly for more and more video games, particularly RPGs - were always met. By the time she started high school, she had decided that making such games was her life's goal. Thus she enrolled at Athena University, chasing a computer science degree. She's currently a junior there, although the recent appearance of a goddess in her head might just throw her goals off...just a little.
Miscellaneous: Sarah typically carries a small computing tablet around in a bag wherever she goes, and in most places she can typically get Internet access with it.

@kagescorpionkai, Theo, and Totemic Hero: You're all accepted.smile Also, Totemic, let's say that the RP's starting up just at the beginning of spring, right in the middle of the Winter-Spring Semester. As for tenebrous...

@Tenebrous Gaze: Sorry, but as you thought, you'll have to edit your Sign-up. The main issue is the powers, though it's not actually because they're overpowered; it's because they're just plain awkward, and seem pretty darn limited too. Still, given the nature of your Inner Myth, there should be plenty of other things Chaos could possilby do. What about messing with people's minds; making their thoughts so chaotic that they can't think straight? You could likely only use something like that on one person at a time at first, but it would be a start.

Inner Myth: Thor

Human Name: Jeremy Williams

Human Gender: Male

Human Age: 21

Appearance: Big and burly, as befits a dude with the Odinson inside him. He has black hair, brown eyes, and a bushy beard.

Powers: Lightning Blast- Zaps one target with a jolt of electricity

Magnificent strength: Jeremy can lift a full-size bus, though it ain't easy

Mr. Fix-It- As the God of Smiths as well as thunder and war, Thor's influence makes Jeremy very good at fixing machines.

Personality of Inner Myth: Thor is, well, exactly what you'd expect: hard-drinking and never met a brawl he didn't like, or for that matter, start. He's not the brightest bulb out there, but he's loyal and hardworking.

Personality of Human Being: Jeremy is extremely competitive, to the point where he sees virtually everyone as a potential rival. This naturally makes him distrusting and suspicious of everyone around him.

Backstory of Inner Myth: Son of Odin and Jord, Thor is a prince among gods. He's often been duped by his adopted brother Loki, and is archenemies with Jormungandr, the World Serpent

Backstory of Human Being: A big-time college football player, Jeremy had come back home to New Olympus for break when the mythological crap hit the fan. He's pretty glad to be Thor's host, but doesn't realize the danger it puts him in.

  • Myth Name: Bast/Bastet/Oubast Andwers to all but mostly goes by Bast.
  • Human Name: Raven Rodriguez
  • Gender: Female in both cases
  • Human Age: 28
  • Appearance: Tall (5'10'') lean and muscular, light brown skin, long black hair, brown eyes (except when they're not (see below)), beaky nose, tends to dress "mannish".
  • Powers:
    • Tooth and Claw: Her fingernails can extend into claws and her teeth into fangs
    • Feline Form: Once she could adopt any feline form. Currently she is limited to that of a large black cat.
    • Feline communication: She can however still speak to any feline type. They won't necessarily obey her but they won't attack her.
    • Feline senses: She can see, smell and hear like a cat. This is not continuous, she has to focus and when she does her nose, eyes and ears become catlike and her eys turn green as well.
    • Martial Arts: This is not a power of Bast's but a skill of Raven's. She's a professional MMA fighter.
    • Body Odor: Again not really a power but an attribute of Bast who was called "the Perfumed Protector". Basically she always smells nice.
  • Personality of Myth: Bold and sensual, protective of what she considers her city and especially of women and children. Oh and she hates snakes.
  • Personality of Human. Hot tempered. Doesn't like to be touched casually. Uncomfortable with Bast's open sexuality. Not helped by the fact that Bast is bi and she's a lesbian. [[Berserk Button: DO NOT call her or her families "illegals" or "wetbacks" or you will be looking for a new set of teeth.
  • Backstory of Myth: She was the Protector of the Boat of Ra and defender of cities, as opposed to her sister Sekhmet who was more a goddess of slaughter. Kind of an Athena/Ares dynamic.
  • Backstory of Human: The child of immigrants Raven grew up poor and tough. Contact sports kept her out of gangs and she eventually became a professional fighter, currently ranked 11th nationally.

Okay, done. Yay!

Inner Mythological Being: Ishtar

Human Name: Faith Arakawa

Human Gender: Female

Human Age: 17

Appearance: Tall, athletic, and muscular. Faith has close-cropped, black hair, and blue eyes.

Powers and/or Abilities:

  • Superhuman strength and speed— Faith has discovered that she can lift small cars with a bit of effort, and runs a 4-minute mile. With concentration, Faith is able heighten these even further.
  • Resilience— Faith's strength also extends to her skin and bones, making her hard to injure. She is also immune to all natural diseases and toxins, and is extremely resistant to extreme temperatures
  • Conflict— Faith can broadly influence the thoughts and feelings of others, sowing conflict or creating arousal, though this is inexact.

Personality of Inner Myth: Ishtar is brash and dominating, and quite the warmonger. She is a fertility goddess, as well, and she is very sexual, but also very prone to utter infatuation. Ishtar has had many lovers, but her greatest love was her first, Tammuz.

Personality of Human Being: Faith is smart, but completely devoted to rugby, which she has been unable to play since the awakening of her Myth. She is often sullen and prone to outbursts of destruction.

Background of Inner Mythological Being: Ishtar was always an angry goddess, but she was also an epic lover. She single-handedly fought wars and journeyed to the underworld.

Background of Human Being: Faith was abandoned as a baby after being born in Kyoto, but was adopted by a wealthy couple in Boston, MA. They put her through a series of exclusive prep schools around the country, ending up at one in Chicago, but after her awakening several weeks ago during a school trip to New Olympus, she convinced her parents to let her stay in the city.
