Ok I made a mistake.
But then can anyone sell me / dissuade me from getting this thing? I'm quite content with W7 and Ubuntu as a dual boot. Should I reevaluate my position?
Nobody is holding a gun to your head and making you upgrade to Win10. I would say that, at the very least, you'll be forced to do so eventually by way of Microsoft and third-party developers withdrawing support. And you get it for free for the first ... year, I think, so there's very little to lose, unless it sucks completely, which I feel is unlikely.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"That's why I'm also open to being sold on it.
I don't understand why they're getting rid of the charms bar of touch devices tbh. Like I get not using it for KBM because it really sucks with a mouse but I honestly think it worked pretty well with touch.
Hell, after getting a Surface Pro 3 I've actually really warmed up to Metro and I'm kinda disappointed Microsoft is toning down some of the more radical conventions they established even on touch devices since I think they do work really well with the.

Microsoft Solitaire for Win10 revealed.
If you sign in with your Xbox Live account, you get Achievements
...How the fuck did they come up with achievements for solitaire?
"Yup. That tasted purple."Achievements will take all of gaming.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.Yes, let's prolong the arbitrary dick-measuring contest.
"Yup. That tasted purple."What, you mean dick waving with our superior PC components wasn't enough?
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.I'm not a particularly big fan of any of these idiotic excuses to engage in dick-measuring.
Maybe because I don't believe in calling yourself better than someone else just because you've got more RAM or a faster CPU clock speed or whatever.
"Yup. That tasted purple."Yeah, the only real measure is the quality of the games you have. And I've got you all beat.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)To build on what Robo Zombie said, I too found the Metro interface exquisite for touch-enabled devices. As a tablet PC user, I hope Microsoft will give the option to turn it on. Otherwise, I'm skeptical about upgrading my laptop.
Does anyone know whether Windows 10 will include some kind of special support for touch devices?
I just enjoy the pleasure of unlocking.
Finally got the Windows Update thingy for reserving a copy of W10 (W7 Pro). Reserved a copy just for giggles.
I wonder if they're going to try to lock it to the computer you did the request through, or if it will be usable on any system you put the thumb drive or DVD into.
All your safe space are belong to TrumpDoes it matter? Or are you thinking that, rather than downloading it on each machine, you'll take the downloaded copy and use it on each machine you want to upgrade? I can't imagine that Microsoft would lock it like that.
Edit: Well, I can imagine, but I'm not sure if there would be any point. The unique license would be generated at install, not download.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"When Arkham Asylum and City both were Windows Live, I chose the PC version over Xbox because I wanted to play them on PC *and* get Cheevers.
Metro isn't a singular UI, it's a design language. I mean hell, the Zune HD was the first device that used the Metro language and it didn't even have Live Tiles (to be fair you could chalk this up to Early-Installment Weirdness, as it was Windows Phone 7 that codified all the main Metro ideas)
Still, it's the stuff like using text size to denote importance (ex. BIG TEXT indicated panels in panel designs◊ rather than explicitly using lines or something) that I liked about Metro, and likewise it's Microsoft's decision to "tone down" some of the more radical aspects of Metro that I don't like.
All they needed to do was add a Start Menu for keyboard and mouse users and 90% of the backlash towards Windows 8 could've been avoided, but NOPE, now Micosoft's going full damage control mode when they really don't need to and overhauling a ton of stuff to be more like iOS and Android on the touch side of things because people didn't like how Windows 8s touch UI stuff worked with the mouse.
Also, they're not getting rid of the start screen, just making it not the default for desktops and laptops (who will use the Start Menu.) Tablets still use the start screen by default btw.

Beautiful. I've also heard Windows 10 will include workspaces. That'll solidify my decision to upgrade... a few weeks after initial release. Just let the first few bugs get ironed out before diving in.
No clue. I'm sure I reserved a copy, but I got no notifications at all.
Although that doesn't answer why half of the used HD space on this laptop has suddenly been freed up either (the really weird part is that nothing is missing).
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotOK, so apparently it's downloading to my 8.1 laptop now. But not my 7 desktop.
"Yup. That tasted purple."So if your windows says its not genuine it seems like you can not update to windows 10? Was the statement made before a lie?
I have a legal copy which came with my computer but mine says that sadly. >.<
Yep, they later spent a lot of time clarifying things.
The OEM volume key the copy of Windows 7 I have on my old desktop apparently got disabled sometime after I activated it (It's still activated as genuine to this day), so I haven't got the upgrade prompt appear there. Or it's because I really don't have 3 gigabytes free on the C drive there.

Tell me when something is news. Preview versions always log everything so they can catch and fix bugs.
