Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa (My Monster Secret)

That's a problem with the Japanese school system (and most other countries, but Japan is most infamous for it). They focus more on rote learning and good test-taking skills than actual understanding of the material.

Yeah, it's the biggest criticism of Japan's school curriculum. It's almost straight memorization, no critical thinking. Even subjects and questions which seem like they'd require critical thinking actually require that you answer based on what some well-known writer or analyst has written. There are no open-ended questions, there is only one right answer. Which as you can expect is not beneficial to raising a generation of open-minded, independent thinkers, which is where a lot of Japan's societal problems these days stem from.

Back to the actual manga, what the heck is up with Box-chan? Is she a character we've already been introduced to before or is she another new character?

Nobody knows… Some have theorized that she's Saki, but I don't really see it. =[ She's an enigma who popped up out of nowhere to drop a reveal and disappeared.

^^^ Yeah, I'm really just criticizing how dumb their education system seems to me.

Obviously, Box-chan escaped from Nozaki's manga, but he managed to track her down and recapture her.

Goddammit, this was way too cute. Those two are just way too adorable. Why don't more manga do this?

.... Yeah, excuse me on being skeptical on revelations dropped by some unknown girl with box on her head. And seriously, this manga lost it's ability to try to do dramatic turns long ago.

Dramatic, maybe not (at least it never lasts long), but some later chapters certainly have a bittersweet flavor to them. And it's delicious.

…By curiousity I took a look at that other vampire series Jitsu wa just crossovered with. It seems pretty funny (though I just picked a random Shonen Champion issue, so I had no context), and is apparently one of the top series of the magazine, currently.

(I was also surprised to see a chapter of Saint Seiya Next Dimension in the mag… how is that thing still running? >.>)

Regarding 114… The last page midly surprised me the first time, but I expected the main couple to be challenged at some point, I think? I mean, I always found it strange that no one ever mentionned Youko in the future… I can't quite remember my reaction though, because it was sort of overshadowed by bigger Wham Episodes later on.

Jitsu wa 115. More cool beauty faces, despite being in the background this time. Also it's been quite a while since Nagisa got a focus, although Mikan is more prominent. Aaaand another Wham Line at the end.

Jitsu wa Raw 150. I don't get much of what they're saying, but I think Oka broke.

115… The Wham Line that will lead to many others, including the most horrible of all. But dayum, these two are adorably clumsy even when they fight. Also, Mikan is a good girl.

150… Hey, Masuda introduced a new character! I wonder what… wait… Err, yep, Oka broke. That's not Character Development at this point, that's a full 180. I think I'll need a bit of time to get used to the new Oka, and I hope he's not gonna be redundant with Shima. Also, Mei broke too.

On the future department future!Mikan is apparently married to someone she doesn't love (from what I get?) but she's joking rather than bitter about it. She talks about Oka's mother remarrying and his changing his family name. So she may or may not be married to Oka…? Or related to him in some way.

There was something… different in this chapter, but I can't tell exactly what. It was kinda pleasant though.

PS: By the way, the series' school finally has a name. It's "Morobare High". It means "open secret". 'f course.

I'm not even that surprised by the revelation. I already figured out that she's from the future not a big leap from that to being another granddaughter.

Happiest of days. That extra box girl line eases my worries by a lot. Something dramatic and feels inducing will happen at the "crossroads", but considering the general direction and mood of the series, it's mostly safe to asume the one true pairing will get their happy ending.

I'm mixed on the latest chapter. Asahi and Youko fighting over stupid things was great, Mikan showing growth, and acting mature and supportive was fantastique, but using Jitsu wa's "words of encouragement, close up to open/closed mouth, run to Youko" trick here felt off.

That spot is sort of representative of one of my problems with Asahi. Getting motivated by your friends is a beautiful thing, but sometimes it feels like he only moves when someone else pushes. Or maybe this is just bitching.

Well, Asahi does take the initiative sometimes (chap 100 or 114 for example). It's true that he easily wavers and doubts himself, but the little push is usually enough to get him to act, so it doesn't bother me that much. What I find a bit of a pity, though, is that part 2 tends to focus much more on Asahi than on Youko in their relationship.

edit: Whew… Looking at Masuda's Japanese Wikipedia page, I discovered totally by chance that his first short series wasn't Toumei Ningen No Tsukurikata but… this… It's called "Shirou Rabbit" and was published in 2007. But unlike TNTK, it was never released in tankoubon so the only way to find it would be to track down every individual issue of the Champion at the time.

A Freshman focused. Not only does the succubus sucks at seduction, she also can't cook. Neither can Momochi for that matter. And they do it in the same pot.

I see Asashi's sister has his straight man gene.

The Pervert almost sounded profound there for a minute, but went right back to perverted in the end.

I think that's the chapter where Sen started to become one of my favorite male characters in this series. The words of a true wise man. You can already see he and Mei are made for each other. Kinda.

A good chapter to reinforce character dynamics. I still laugh my ass off at the "eating with the same expression" punchline.

Yaminabe looks like a once and never again deal, depending on how many assholes bring things like toothpaste or tabasco.

Another Jitsu Wa chapter filled with laughs, sweetness, and stupid. That curry duel, and the fallout was just too much.

Saki might be my favorite of the freshmen bunch, for now, though Momochi's also a riot, Sen has absolutely no shame, and Mei is an even straighter Asahi.

I think it's a bit of a stock thing at this point, but that's probably where the idea originates.
