Ready, Aim, Fire!

(Well, I will admit the ol' aggressive strategy got me further than self-termination. Touche, Hobo. Touche.)

Well, it seems neither remaining player was interested in shooting either themselves or each other. You have another 24 hours to choose your action or change your mind about what you have chosen.

One day and night of deathly quiet passed. Lord Hobo Tortle continued to gamble, managing to win all of Guard Captain Seivenzro's equipment off of him, while Lord William counted his money to see if he had enough to pay for the services of an assassin.

With the next dawn, William sought out Joan Nullinch to give her her final contract.

"So, Miss Nullinch..." he began.

"Let me guess: You're going to pay me a ridiculous amount of money to kill Lord Hobo Tortle?"

"Actually, no. I wish to assign you to myself instead."

"Really? Well, if you say so." The assassin raised her knife and advanced toward him.

"Not in that way!" he cried. "I mean I want you to keep watch over me and stop anyone who wants to kill me!"

"Oh, fine." With a sigh of disappointment, she looked for a good place to conceal herself.

Lord Hobo Tortle picked up Will Seivenzro's helmet. "It looks a little big for me. Have you got one in my size?"

"My Lord, I don't usually share my gear with other people," replied the guard captain. "You'll just have to make do with this one."

"Fine, then." The Hobo Tortle slipped the helm on, then took up the guard's spear. "Hopefully, this will do well enough on its own."

Once he was ready, the noble strode out into the halls for the final battle.

"Is he coming to kill me yet?" whispered William.

"No," Joan hissed back.

"How about now?"

"Still no."

"Now?"

"Will you just be quiet and let me do my job? ...Oh, hey, I think I hear him coming."

William drew his sword and watched the door. Sure enough, within a minute, The Hobo Tortle strode into the room, spear and shield raised.

"I figured you couldn't wait around forever," said William.

"True. I was just biding my time until I could get the guards on my side. Or, at least, their armaments." The Hobo Tortle hefted Seivenzro's spear proudly. "This is the finest steel in all of Aisuleyshun, as is the armour. Do you think your fancy ceremonial sword stands a chance against this?"

"Perhaps. We'll just have to find out." With that, William lunged.

He was clearly outmatched. The length of the spear kept him at bay most of the time, and the few hits he managed to get in were completely stopped by the guard armour. With no protection of his own, all he could do was try to keep The Hobo Tortle from skewering him as long as he could...

Then the combat was interrupted by a cloaked figure darting out from behind a nearby curtain. This individual slipped behind The Hobo Tortle and slid a poisoned dagger into a gap in the armour. Quickly, the noble-in-guard's-clothing collapsed.

"You may have reach," said Joan, "but we had flexibility."

The snow glowed white on the mountain that night. The few survivors from the chaos at the castle had gathered up by the peak to hold a new coronation.

Captain Seivenzro strode forth, carrying the crown that would have gone on the head of Nine-Tailed Cat almost a week before had it not been for the assassination. "The Queen is dead," announced Seivenzro, "along with her brother, her sister, her son, her neice, her nephew, her daughter-in-law, and pretty much everyone else with any relation to her."

Then, carefully, the guard captain placed the crown upon William Radar Storm's head.

"Long live the King!"

A chorus of cheers erupted from the gathered crowd. Once they were done, the group headed back to the castle for celebratory refreshments.

After a magnificent feast that couldn't be beat, William retired to his quarters for the evening, where Joan joined him.

"Well done, Your Highness," said the assassin. "Aisuleyshun is yours. I have a feeling you'll rule it well."

"Thank you, Miss Nullinch."

"Of course, that leaves me with a problem. Now that you're the only person with any claim to the throne, there's no call for backstabbing any more. I have to find a new line of work."

"I see. Have you put any thought into your new role?"

"Well, I was thinking... You've pretty much filled up the role of King, but there's still room for a Queen, isn't there?"

William put a hand to his chin, thinking. After a while, he said, "I'll consider it."

"Thanks. Anyway, good night."

And so began the reign of King William of Aisuleyshun. Under his rule, the kingdom prospered as it did during the reign of Elyssa, and with a stalwart guard captain and a skillful spy at his back, he had nothing to fear from rivals. The times of Aisuleyshun's glory would continue for many years.

Good Lord, that was the most fun I've had in a while in this game! Definitely in for the next one.
