I enjoyed the first one. Once you accept it for what it is instead of hating it for what it isn't, it's fairly good. Kooky visuals and likeable characters. All the characters are the same, just a different plot. And it helps that it's a sequel to the cartoon instead of trying to pass itself off as a remake.

I actually liked the movie as well. I'm not saying it doesn't have flaws, but it didn't stop me for enjoying it. So I'm cautiously optimistic about the sequel.

Anybody notice that Time looks like N. Tropy?

I did indeed notice the N. Tropy resemblance. It's pretty cool.

I was wondering, is it possible this film isn't doing so well because it's been six years since the original and Disney left it too long before doing a sequel? Would the film have done better if it were released around 2013 or so?

The abysmal reviews and Johnny Depp's quite faded reputation probably didn't help either. I suppose if it'd been released closer to his more appreciated roles it could've possibly done a tad better, yes.

I also feel like the critical backlash from the first caught up with audiences since then. I can only think of one or two people I know that actually liked the original and the majority are people who are either indifferent or people who hated it.

Personally, I'm on the level where the original Alice in Burtonland makes me mad. The mere mention of it raises my internal body temp by at least 5 degrees. I went in hoping it would be a dark twisted adventure and... Oh god. I can't think of a better combination of director and subject matter and somehow it utterly failed to me.

Saw it yesterday. The 3D is the best part about it...it didn't completely suck but I can't give it a better overall comment than "meh". Time was actually the best character.
