I do think in general truth tends to be a happiness maximizer because we can't make informed decisions without it. That is, to know which decisions will maximize our happiness we need true information to interpolate likely outcomes of those decisions.

That doesn't necessarily apply to all truths, though.

^^ That's pretty much what Meklar seems to be saying:

We're taught that when the truth offends us, the appropriate response is to hide the truth rather than ask ourselves why we're offended and what we might do to change things.

If we valued the truth more and having comforting beliefs less, not only would we face less stigma towards expressing the truth to others, but politicians would also find it harder to get away with lying to voters. However, the last thing people are willing to blame for any problem is their own culture...
