The uploader doesn't allow animated images even on a technical level. I would not be surprised if that isn't foolproof, though.

Not realizing it was animated, I just uploaded a GIF I had gotten from Tumblr a while back as an avatar. While the profile page says "No animations please" it might be a good idea to have animations prevented from upload somehow if at all possible.
Now to go make that GIF a still
