I saw a particularly frustrating example of the Geek Reference Pool on Anger Management yesterday. This chick called Kate was dressed as an obvious Yoko Littner Expy, but she claimed she was "Gina X" from some imaginary sci-fi show, and the only actual geek references were very basic Star Wars references. It felt like the writers just did a Google Image Search for "hot anime girl" and picked Yoko's outfit, since there would have been no point for them to mention any aspect of TTGL at all.
Speaking of which, what do you think is the kind of franchise that mainstream audiences are familiar with? Star Wars itself? The Super Bowl? The Simpsons?
