Twilight of the Gods - A Scion: Ragnarok RP

Many mythologies the world over have taught the story of how the world began. Very few tell the story of the world’s end.

The exception lies with the Aesir, exalted gods of ancient Scandinavia. Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods, the last battle between Aesir and Jotun, the death of the old world and birth of the new, is the center of their story, the capstone to the saga of the gods themselves.

And now, in the twenty-first century, the Fimbulvetr comes. The end, it seems, has finally come.

Scions - children of the gods with ordinary mortals - have a role to play in this story as well. While many of the Aesir are fated to die, the fate of their children, as always, is unknown. Whether they will live or die, triumph or fail, live to see the world reborn or become ashes with the old world is unknown to gods and giants alike. What is beyond doubt is that their travels and adventures in this time of need will take them across the Nine Worlds of the Aesir, from the highest halls of Asgard to the darkest depths of Helheim and beyond. What role will you play in the doom of the Aesir?

Keeping the sales pitch a little shorter this time. Suffice to say, this is an attempt to do a freeform play-by-post adaptation of the Ragnarok supplement for Scion. Essentially, the big difference between this and the “main” game is that Ragnarok is centered in its entirety around the Aesir and the saga of Ragnarok, the end of the world.

The story will be told in three arcs, chronicling the Band from their first adventures together as heroes, all the way through demigodhood, and, finally, godhood, as the final battle approaches.

If you’re interested in signing up for the game, you can find a character sheet here. You can find a list of available gods here. If you have any questions about the signup process, feel free to PM me or ask in the thread.

For now, I’m opening this up to six players. Too many more and it becomes unwieldy.

That’s it, that’s all. Hoping this catches someone’s interest!

Accepted Characters:

  • Sophie, Scion of Freyja.
  • Valentine, Scion of Odin.
  • Jake, Scion of Heimdall.
  • Fenrick, Scion of Loki.
  • Donna, Scion of Hel.

Name: Sophie Amber Wanes

Divine Parent: Freya

Calling: Champion

Appearance: Sophie is a 19 year old women of exceptional beauty. Pale skin, strawberry blonde, she is about 5’10” tall, and trained to be point where she had appearance’s on the cover of fitness magazines. When she talks, she does so in a noticeable RP-accent.

Personality: Sophie is a friendly and cheerful woman, but almost annoyingly focused. She cannot sit still. If she has nothing to do, she will start to train. If she can’t train she will find other ways to kill time, including pursuing available sex partners. While she can be incredibly nice, and very emphatic to people she has just met, she also has a clear love of a good fight, to the point thats he might pick one with someone she considers a challenge for nothing but to see if she can beat the other. Ultimately, she wants to be recognized as a strong and capable fighter in her own, to the point that no one questions her claim to that.

Nature: Competitor

Background and Visitation: Sophie’s (mortal) mother Cordelia is a officer in her Majesty’s Royal Navy. Returning from deployment, she was assigned to mandatory counselling and ended up having a short affair with the counsellor. Which got even more surprising when nine months after, she showed up before Cordelia door again and showed her their daughter. Before Cordelia could ask more questions, she left again, leaving her alone with little Sophie, which according to a DNA test was truly Cordelia daughter. Thus, Sophie grew up as a military brat, living mostly on military bases. She became an especial favorite of the close-combat instructors of the base, resulting in her learning various forms of martial arts and fighting techniques from a disturbing young age.
While appreciating the martial culture, she was never one for the uniform herself. With 16, she started to take all the fighting training, which she had always loved, and entered a MMA competition and surprisingly won. Deciding she liked both the fighting and the spotlight, she accepted one of the offered contracts and thus set out into a professional career, quickly becoming well known for both her fighting skill and good looks, currently working to demonstrate that women’s MMA can stand on equal ground with men’s.
One day, she was offered a fight “off the books” for an important dairy magnate. Inside a factory, her challenge was to beat a male MMA fighter of the magnate’s choice. Despite it being a hard fight against the burly man, she won in the end and was brought to the magnate’s presence...which promptly revealed himself to be her “Uncle Freyr”, coming to do his sister a favor and give her “the talk”...

Attributes:Sophie favors strongly Strength, Dexterity and Stamina as well as Appearance, Charisma and Perception

Skills: Brawl, Awareness, Athletics and Fortitude as part of her fighting training. She is also learning Melee skills after learning of her heritage. Empathy and Presence come natural to her. Together with her martial arts skill, she also learned to drive from military instructors, which shows as a Drive skill. Due to her mothers original insistence on studying to be a doctor, she also has Medicine skill.

Birthright: Sophie owns a set of black rune-stitched hand and feet bandages, which allow her to Channel the War Purview. Also, as a gift from her Uncle for awakening her Ichor when beating his Folkvangr Warrior, he gave her a dwarfen forged Belt which allows her to access the Fertility Purview. The belt can change its appearance, and fit itself to any outfit. Finally, as a gift from her mother, she owns a Viking-style Sword, Dreyrugr (Old Norse for "Blood-Stained"), which allows her to channel the Health Purview.

Purviews: War, Health, Fertility

Epic Attributes: Epic Appearance, Epic Charisma, Epic Dexterity

Prominent Virtue: Courage

Equipment: Sophie owns a Harley Davidson MTE 350 E motorcycle and favors clothing with shows off her looks and abs. Since her visitation, she wears her bandages, belt and sword almost constantly, making use of her natural charisma and looks to make it “fashionable”, to the point where she might have started a “neo-martial style” of fashion. While professionally a MMA fighter, she works as a model at the side to bolster her budget, making her financially independent

Name: Valentine Gallows

Divine Parent: Odin

Calling: Wildlife photographer

Appearance: Val is a tanned beanpole of a man, with blond hair cropped short to keep it out of the way. He has a distinct tendency towards scruffiness, and much of his clothing has a stitched-up tear somewhere.

Personality: Valentine is pleasant but reserved, a function of being less comfortable around people than he is with animals. He doesn't really like confrontation and is difficult to piss off, but once successfully angered it's even harder to convince him to let go of the grudge.

Nature: Loner

Background and Visitation: Val's mother was working at a laser tag facility when she met the oddly charming one-eyed old drifter who would leave her with a son, and had risen to manager by the time that son left home. As a consequence, Valentine got to spend a lot of time playing for free when it wasn't too busy, and with practice became good enough that he had to occasionally be reminded not to dominate the paying customers too much.

After an otherwise unremarkable childhood, Val earned a degree in photography and a decent living selling wildlife photos. While on the job, he was surprised by a giant, toothy worm-thing bursting out of the ground with an apparent intention to devour him. He snapped a single photo and beat feet, which probably wouldn't have been successful if the old man with the spear and the huge wolf hadn't shown up. After all that, Valentine found the whole spiel about gods and titans and his own parentage as plausible as any other explanation for what the fuck that thing was.

After giving him the basics, Odin entrusted Val with the wolf (named Gráðr) and a magic gun (named Reciprocity, which Valentine finds oddly worrying) and has largely left his training up to his half-brother Baldur. Baldur promptly and thoroughly charmed Val, as he charms nearly everyone, and even gave him a pair of birthright sunglasses. Any suggestion that Odin set up this relationship so that Valentine would be properly vengeful upon Baldur's fated death would of course be paranoid and absurd.

Attributes: Val's job requires a keen eye, good hand-eye coordination, the reflexes to take the shot at just the right moment, and the ability to wait long hours for a good picture. Naturally, he has good Perception, Dexterity, Wits, and Stamina.

Skills: Valentine developed his Art, Awareness, Animal Ken, Stealth, and Survival for his civilian job, and Baldur has been training him in combat skills, especially Marksmanship. The Integrity comes naturally.

Birthrights: The handgun Reciprocity gives Val access to the Death Purview, and the shades Baldur gave him let him use Sun boons and somehow never seem to impair his vision in dark areas. He also has the assistance of Gráðr, a Nemean wolf. Gráðr is quite intelligent, and despite his lack of speech usually capable of making his opinions known.

Purviews: Death and Sun

Epic Attributes: Dexterity and Perception

Prominent Virtue: Loyalty

Equipment: Valentine always carries his camera, although these days he's selling pictures of monsters to rags more disreputable than his usual clients. He favors clothing with lots of pockets, the better to hold various useful bits of wilderness gear such as compass, Swiss army knife, and, these days, bear mace.

Okay, basic rundown. Birthrights operate on a five-point scale in the crunchier version, with each Scion getting five points to spend across all categories unless they pay for extra. There's a thing explaining what each level is worth that should be useful for ballparking.

  • Creature—An animal companion.
    • 1 - The creature is small, weak, somewhat fragile or perhaps entirely incorporeal— a weak nekomata, a monkey, a scarab, an owl or a raven, for example. Such creatures are useful for warning their owners of dangers and providing some limited reconnaissance, but little else.
    • 2 - The creature is a somewhat larger or more powerful mundane beast—tigers, wolves, boars, large birds of prey. Weak entities can also be included here—a serpopard, Stymphalian bird, or various and sundry nature spirits would fall into this category.
    • 3 - The creature is a beast of modest power, such as a golem, coatl or a pegasus.
    • 4 - The creature is a more powerful one, such as the Taureau-Trois-Graines or a valkyrie horse.
    • 5 - The creature is a unique beast of legend (such as Gullinbursti) or a particularly dangerous monster such as a kirin, a roc or a basilisk.

  • Followers—Allies who look to you for leadership.
    • 1 - Five cops, hoplites or jaguar warriors.
    • 2 - Five zombies or berserks.
    • 3 - Five spartoi, samurai or amazons.
    • 4 - Five myrmidons, einherjar or tengu.
    • 5 - Five valkyries or shinobi (magic shadow ones, not mortal ninjas).

  • Guide—A teacher and instructor.
    • 1 - A wise mortal. The guide can offer useful advice about several aspects of mortal life (Ability specialties, the conduct of war, finances, etc.). Such guides might be knowledgeable in certain areas relating to the Gods—the mystic practices of their worshipers, unconfirmed accounts of titanspawn, and so forth—though they rarely have firsthand experience with Scions or their divine parents. In fact, many guides at this level have no idea how or why a deity would select them to mentor their children.
    • 2 - A very wise and/or powerful mortal. The guide is either an extremely knowledgeable mortal—the World’s foremost expert in his or her chosen field, for example—or one who wields wide influence. The more power guides possess, the less time they have to guide their charges. A guide at this level could also be one of the rare individuals who is aware of the struggle between the Gods and the Titans. Such guides often have direct experience with other Scions or titanspawn.
    • 3 - An experienced Scion. The guide can offer considerable insight into all things semidivine. She might know other Scions from several pantheons, or even a few Gods. Many have experience fighting various strains of titanspawn. Unfortunately, Scions mentoring Scions can sometimes resemble the blind leading the blind. Even experienced Scions sometimes misunderstand the inscrutable intrigues of their parents. Another drawback to having a Scion for a mentor is that she’s often involved with her own heroic Band, leaving her less time to guide her pupil.
    • 4 - A legendary being. The guide could conceivably be any sort of creature or being. Many kami and loa serve in this capacity, as do the numerous nature spirits that crop up in Greek and Norse legend. Although they aren’t outright Gods, such creatures are particularly attuned to the workings of divinity. These guides often have considerable experience with titanspawn, and might even have a rudimentary knowledge of the Titans themselves. Such creatures typically have limited knowledge of the mortal World, however. Sirens know lots about sailors, for instance, but their knowledge of cars and stock exchanges is limited.
    • 5 - A minor God or Goddess. The guide possesses considerable firsthand knowledge of the Overworld, the Underworld and destinations in between, though he is often preoccupied with his divine duties. Some Gods are notoriously cryptic or find it difficult to communicate with mortals. Such deities confound (inadvertently or otherwise) as often as they guide.
  • Relic—Wondrous gifts of the Gods. One dot gets you access to a Purview, but since they're magic items there's lots of other effects they can have, from mechanical bonuses to damage from a weapon or skill checks with a tool or whatever (which doesn't really apply here) to a vehicle never running out of gas or a book being cursed so that when it's stolen people the thief loves start dropping dead until it's returned. Those are mostly one point, although letting you undertake a quest through the underworld to bring someone back to live costs four.

Ah, cool, thanks man. Though I don't really know what we're doing with the points (I was only planning on two relics, does that mean I should pick an animal or something?).

Also I take it that the "Visitation" also involves us being told like "Hey, go to this place"? It seems like we're from all around the globe, so I guess if that's not the case I can always use the convenient "was on a vacation" excuse, but if we're told to go there it would make things easier. Or do we start out knowing each other?

Two relics presumably just means that they're extra-useful items. It'd be perfectly reasonable for someone in the less freeform version to just have two relics and spend the extra points on equipment bonuses or something.

The last Scion game math GMed here (which corroded into nothingness, alas) started with "You all meet in an inn diner, because your divine parents told you to go there."

Oh, I should also mention that it's traditional to include references to the Scion's parent in their names. Sample characters include a son of Thor (aka Donar) whose last name is Donner, a son of Tyr whose first name is Tyrone, and a son of Loki named Sylvester "Sly" Guiler. It's probably Fate's fault.

Of course the most magnificently named Scion is still Horace Farrow. Guess who his dad is.

Also, Visitation is a background event that happens prior to the game itself. It's entirely possible to have been active for a few months or even a year before the gods decide it's time for you to do shit.

Also, I forgot to mention that Vali, at this point, isn't a god him/herself. (S)he is still a Scion, just one with a predetermined fate in the grand scheme of Ragnarok.

[up] Scion of Loki would be fun, since his role is so different from the rest.

  • Name: Jake White
  • Divine Parent: Heimdall
  • Calling: Southern Baptist Minister. His job is being high school pastor at a small church in northern Texas. Technically has two jobs, as being a high school soccer coach, despite paying very little and only taking relatively few hours a week, is classified as employment for tax purposes.
  • Appearance: Male, 27, 5'9". Caucasian, somewhat pale by Texas standards, but still relatively tan, he has short black hair, brown eyes, and a goatee. He usually wears a white cowboy hat, carpenter jeans, and a jacket that has a Bible-sized pocket on the inside left breast.
  • Personality: He is very friendly and likes helping others. He is able to have a conversation with just about anyone, and can talk for hours if need be. He believes that even though his soul isn't of the world, he is still in it, and integrates into society well enough.
  • Nature: Caregiver
  • Background and Visitation: Born to a plumber in Texas, Jake thought he was just going to work in the family business (Cleverly titled Whitewater Plumbing) all his life. However, in High School he felt the calling to spread the word, and decided to go to Seminary instead. Not that he didn't keep working with his family, as that was how he made money in the summer to fund his education. When he graduated he returned home for a short while until he found work as a high school pastor for a small church in a small town, in the northern parts of Texas. He also coaches high school soccer during that season.
Heimdall approached him in his office late one night, in order to give him the 411 on the whole Scion business, hand him his relics, and to tell him to go to [starting location goes here]]. But rather than losing his faith, he believed the Aesir and others to be pre-Adamic races, and that he was chosen to take the Gospel to where it has never been before.
  • Attributes: Favors charisma, intelligence, manipulation, stamina, and wits.
  • Skills: He knows his Bible inside and out, obviously. He has all the knowledge associated with a Doctor of Divinity, including knowing how to read Ancient Greek and Hebrew. He's also really good at fixing interior plumbing. He played soccer in high school and college, and although the sport is not exactly popular in America, since he was in Texas where there's a sizable Latino population, he would be considered well above-average in that sport, and in good shape. He can drive a car or truck well. As another benefit of his Texas upbringing, he is no stranger to firearms, though he isn't an expert by any means.
  • Birthright:
    • For the Guardian purview, he was given a 12-gauge Remington Model 887 Nitro Mag. It requires no ammunition, as the act of pumping the shotgun magically conjures one of any desired round into the barrel. This is not limited to lethal stuff like shot and slug rounds, as it can use rubber, beanbag, and pepper gas rounds, or even blanks. It also hurts like a motherfucker to get bopped on the head with it.
    • For the Jotunblut purview, he has leatherbound red-letter pocket Bible, which he always keeps close to his heart in his jacket pocket. It protects its holder from mental interference or telepathic attacks, or at the very least increases their resistance to those.
  • Purviews: Guardian, Jotunblut
  • Epic Attributes: Perception and Stamina
  • Prominent Virtue: Endurance
  • Equipment: Being from Texas, he drives a truck (A silver 2009 Ford F-150 crew cab to be exact. This, but imagine it's five years old instead of in a showroom) which he got certified pre-owned at a dealer within the last year. Thanks to the low property costs in Texas, he lives in a small two-bedroom, one-bath house with a one-car garage that he rents. Has a cellphone (Samsung Galaxy S5), and a two-usb charger with cables plugged into his cigar lighter. However both cables are micro USB so while most Android phones and tablets are okay, it wouldn't provide power to an Apple device. Usually carries eighty bucks in his wallet.

[up][up] Vali isn't available, no. Like I said, he is still a Scion (as evidenced by rikalous' character,) so they can't father divine children on their own. But you're right, Hel is available.

[up] Considering the official Scion stance on the big guy, this is going to be a fun character to tear apart :D

Name: Fenrick Warton

Divine Parent: Loki

Calling: Master Manipulator

Appearance: Fenrick seems to take quite a bit out of his fathers book. His hair is slicked back and borderline greasy looking, and very, very uneven. He's pale, almost sickly so with dark, emerald green eyes. He does seem to have a constant smirk on his face all the time, and seems to dress very casually. His attire consisting more often than not of a hoodie and a pair of jeans...regardless of the weather.

Personality: Fenrick is his father's son for the fact of his mischievous and borderling lying nature. He can wrap people around his fingers and borderline get them to do what he pleases, when he pleases. But...Fenrick is really a sweet kid. He can be shy and a little nervous, twitchy, to the point that it's almost like he suffers from a seperate personality. Who knows, maybe he is?

Nature: Trickster

Background and Visitation: Fenrick seemed to live a double life. To his mother and friends, he was the kind, shy, book loving nerd they all adored him for. Never stepping on any toes, never getting into any trouble, never stepping up for himself. Those who didn't know him seemed to know a different side of him. Sly. Quiet. Conniving. Manipulative. In some cases, powerful. He had blackmail material on the people that needed to be blackmailed, information other people could never know about. It was this way through high school, and even when he graduated. His mother always told him, "Never do it for yourself. Do it for others. The people you know in life will help you in more ways than one." And this is what he believed. The people he blackmailed helped his friends. The information helped his mother get a raise in her job. He was cruel and conniving, but never to those he cared for. When he met his father, he understood why his mother wanted him to have this stance. His father approached him rather bluntly, oddly contrast to how he THOUGHT he knew of him. The meeting was short: He filled him in on his mission, what he was meant to do, gave him his stuff, and left. He was left there in the dingy alley way, wondering if this was one of the most creative cons he'd ever heard or...or if he stepped into something stranger than he ever could have realized.

And then...endless opportunity seemed to be at his finger tips...

Attributes: Fenrick has been known to be quick witted and silver tongued. Naturally, he requires good social skills, so heavily favors Manipulation, Intelligence, Wits, Charisma (Hey, even HE can be a little charming!). However, since some of his stuff ends up back firing, he DOES kinda need to get dirty...usually. He can aim well, which is good for his knife.

Skills: Academics, Empathy, Integrity, Presence, and Stealth. He's currently learning how to use a knife, so Melee as well.

Birthrights: Fenrick was granted 2 Relics upon meeting his father: A book, and a Knife. The knife is his favorite, with a shining blade that never seems to dull, and a cold, black metal handle that seems made fit in his palm. It allows him to channel his Fire Purview, and can never truly leave his side. If he's ever a set distance away from the blade, it'll find it's way into it's holster, located on his hip.

His second relic he acquired was a book, simple and plain with a leather cover on the front. It had no words or text, but upon meeting someone for the first time, the pages would write upon themselves the basic, if not random, information of the person (ranging from anything involving their favorite color, to their blood type, or even how many people in their family). It also allows him to channel his Chaos Purview.

Purview: Fire and Chaos.

Epic Attributes: Epic Manipulation, Epic Charisma, Epic Intelligence.

Prominent Virtue: Loyalty.

Equipment: Fenrick has very little in terms of belongings. He has his red hoodie, long since full of holes and long since worn out from years upon years of use, but it's a security blanket for him. He carries around a backpack, if only to carry his equipment around and cherishes his iPod, always at his side. If he didn't have his music, he KNEW what would happen?

I thought that the way Scion handles pantheons, we're all Aesir? But if we're just going off of Norse mythology, Njord is a redlink on the wiki, so wouldn't the only other easily-accessible Vanir be Freyr? Unless there's some muckery in the Scion setting that created an abundance of Vanir, I'd say that a low number is to be expected.
