"What do manatees or their hues have to do with anything?"
I mean, Turf Wars appear to be a popular (and lucrative) subculture thing for kids. It's not their whole culture.
It's been fun.Yeah, there's office buildings and so on in the background behind the trainline in Inkopolis. The Inklings seem to have a remarkably mundane world by our standards, it's just not obvious to us because we always play as a fresh youth.
I sure said that!Well it certainly is bigger and longer lasting than any real-world kid trends.
Remember how Pokémon was huge in the 90's, but now it just sort of exists, still has it's fans, but it's not absolutely every fucking where?
Turf Wars are kinda like the "huge and every fucking where" part never faded away.
Annnnd I wouldn't be surprised if more than just "kids" were into turf wars. Heck, it just comes off as a national sport. Like 'murican rugby, actual football or Starfcraft.
Though Turf Wars are supposed to be "cool n rebellious" so that'd be weird to be some national favorite past time, since it would hardly come off as rebellious anymore.
OVERANALYZING COLORFUL SQUIDS!
It's popular enough to get a segment on the news.
It's not just a single demographic's trend.
Said news are run by teen idols though.
But does that devalue the news? I suppose not?
...
Why am I analyzing fictitious squid culture?
@Geist: Have you SEEN the Pokemon Stores in New York City and Tokyo, to name just two? Pokemon is a huge property. It's not as visible now because the Internet has made it easier to battle and chat and so on online rather than on playgrounds or so on, but I can definitely see that sort of 'kids go to school and spend their free moments talking strategies, cool stories, and brands' subculture thing going on.
It's been fun.Because you have nothing better to do?
Neither do I.
Also, I don't think the Squid Sisters are quite Teenagers, more like early 20's. They were designed to me more mature looking than player Inklings, after all.
It also occurs to me how a society of people who turn into squids to swim in ink they shoot would utilize that in any scenario besides combat.

There are records of Turf Wars as old as their civilization. No way that it's only popular with the "rebelious youth".
"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."Rather than comparing Turf Wars to the Pokemon craze, it might be better to associate it to the X-TREME sports craze that persisted in the late 90's to early 2000's?
@Giest: Why not analyze silly colorful squids?
We are all made of star stuff. Very, very weird star stuff.Especially since they dump so much lore on us.
It's pretty goofy lore, but it's lore!
I sure said that!I still find it hilarious Judd's owner decided to freeze his cat before saving himself or his family.
Its like Superman except instead of fighting crime, he judges paintball.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersMaybe technology only allowed for cat-sized cryogenics?
"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."Also, it made him immortal. He's been judging for at least 2,000 years.
I sure said that!Re:Judd - Maybe the guy and other humans escaped to space and colonized some far-off place. He just forgot to bring his cat that he used for cryo experiments.
Re:Turf Wars - I think everyone is into it in some way, it's just younger inklings that are participating in the televised sports events just like the real world. Fortunately for the inkling society, it doubles as their Reserve Officers Training Corps in case another serious turf war erupts.

My DA account... I draw stuff sometimes!Splatoon is actually set a couple million years after a version of Xenoblade Chronicles X where humanity was forced to flee the Earth but it wasn't destroyed.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Trailers of Xenoblade X say "the Earth is destroyed".
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN THE SPLATOON TIMELINE: The aliens only hit the polar ice caps, raised the sea levels and doomed land creatures, so it's only "destroyed" metaphorically.

My DA account... I draw stuff sometimes!I think treating it as a popular sport is probably the closest analogue to any real life activity. The whole aesthetic definitely reminds me of the "X-treme Sportz" stuff from the 90's, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if that was a partial inspiration.
Reaction Image RepositoryThe creators themselves already admitted that skateboarding and "street fashion" was a huge influence on the aesthetic approach.
@ Red Savant:
Yes, Pokémon is still going strong and still has a large presence in Japan and some parts of the States, but anywhere else? You'd get a "oh, that cartoon is still going?" reaction if you mention Pokémon.

@Geist: That's true, but it doesn't need to be big everywhere to be huge.
It's been fun.Pretty much every major anime or display event around these parts attracts pokemon players. Always brought my system to AFA and Cosfest to harvest streetpasses.

The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls! So the difference in splatling ranges appears to be only a single line each.
I knew I didn't get that much more range from the Hydra.
Still enough to put your sweetspot ahead of the Jet Squelcher and just behind sniper-chargers.
Honestly weapons range in Splatoon is relatively close-combat, probably justifiable since the Inkling de-weaponized Turf War inkblasters have much lower pressure thresholds than real Great Turf War weapons.
