* Rolls Eyes *
The Uniforms came about during the Meiji Restoration.
Keep Rolling OnThere are a huge variety of Anime and Manga school uniforms for the girls at least like Vests, Overalls, Seifuku. Many artist will hire an actual fashion designer to design them, such as Negima's school uniforms, and there is even a trademark registry for them.
The only time you really see the generic blue and white Seifuku is older series or series where the school is not part of the plot and it's a basic tell.
Had a discussion in the A&M chatterbox back in January about it here are some examples, guess that series![1]◊[2]◊[3]◊ more generic examples◊ [4]◊[5]◊
Now guy's uniforms tend to be way more generic outside of the rare series like Persona 4's really snazzy ones with that awesome stitching.

"Guess the school!" - was a pastime where I was. Private schools go for their own colour schemes and coats of arms, which also lends itself to figuring the wearer's socio-economic status. We'd Sherlock Scan people on the train.
All of this reminds me of the time, when I was walking past an all-girls school and all the guys had flocked to the front gate after lessons. I had to keep the most poker of faces.

Si Vis Pacem, Para Perkele[Insert mandatory miniskirt joke]
Funnily enough, in the Showa days girls used to lengthen their skirts to "rebel" (as we've seen with the sukeban). Now they roll them up above the knees (against school rules!), although it's also more convenient as the skirt doesn't get in the way.

Si Vis Pacem, Para PerkeleWould prefer if that article showed us examples of the new uniform designs.
Yeah, school uniform designs are Serious Business over there. Anime committees even have lawyers who examine the designs and make sure they're different enough from every preceding uniform in anime before them, to avoid copyright infringements.
fucking hell... in blighty school uniforms are pretty much... uniform, the only difference being the colour of the blazer and badge
advancing the front into TV TropesThey don't always have a blazer. My school just had a black sweatshirt with the school logo printed on one side of the chest.
must be a Surrey *incompressible muttering about the schools he went to* thing

advancing the front into TV TropesMy Secondary School moved from that (in blue) to a Blazer while I was there — due to a new Headmaster.
Slu...Surrey? Me Berkshire. Just across the road from Wellington College (or "Welly"), in fact.

Keep Rolling Onthat typo was never there *waves hand*
advancing the front into TV TropesI used to go to a public school but transferred to a private school started at 6th grade, where we all had to wear a uniform. It IS uncomfortable at times and it quickly becomes boring to wear the same thing every day, but I do like how it looked.

See the private boarding school I went to didn't have any uniform, often spent days in dressing gowns.
My state school primary school just had jumpers, cardigans and coats with the school crest and the ties in school colours.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI kinda liked my uniform, I probaly would like the new ones.
We never had uniforms. In hindsight, I might have enjoyed I not needing to worry about what to wear to school (theoretically, since there was no point in me giving a fuck). On the other hand, you're going to have to learn how to dress anyway, and it better be sometime before your first serious job interview.

My high school didn't have a uniform so much as a dress code: a certain type of shirt and khaki pants
Since we are on the topic of school uniforms, is it a common real life thing to have different color ties and such to signify year or department?
I have seen it a lot in animes like both Love Live generations, Bodacious Space Pirates, Hidamari Sketch, and a couple of other shows.
In The Legend Of Heroes Trails Of Cold Steel is flat out entirely different colors of uniform, Class VII wears red, nobles wear white and commoners wear green.
Tempted to try and make a trope on it.

I think some schools do differentiate between the years and department, but you'd have to know what to look for. Don't think it's common though.
Si Vis Pacem, Para PerkeleI wonder if he was stressed with his job, but we are not sure why. Whether he gone mad on radio or TV, his career is toast thanks to that.
Yeah, that's not the kind of thing you bounce back from. Well, not right away, at least.
Japan's got tighter surveillance laws and norms in general. Racial targeting is bad, but this isn't really beyond the pale for them.
Which I still find surprising though that speaks more of my ignorance.
That kind of cultural perspective is something I want to learn more about.
I think a marital spirt is is the last thing Japan wants....
