TLDR; a lot of the international characters are ethnic stereotypes, and at one point the main character wears blackface.

Thanks for the warning.

My only exposure to Kinnikuman is Ultimate Muscle on Fox Kids, and at the time I took that more as an alien invasion story that used wrestling as an arena - but then, I never really got into it. I might check out the original if it's a bit different, so long as I gird myself for some poor ethnic stereotypes.

I found and cracked up at an old '90s Cartoon Network bumper, where a Legion of Doom meeting goes completely off the rails thanks to Brainiac asking for "a decent pair of pants".

Injustice has actually referenced this bumper twice; in the first game one of Grundy's combos is named "Wants Pants Too", and one of Brainiac's addons in 2 is named "Decent Pants".

The one where the Powerpuff Girls have to save Aquaman and Wonder Woman from the Legion of Doom is funny as well.

Here's some more classic CN goodness, that time they, I kid you not, ran a special ad on Nickelodeon. That's right, they straight-up invaded their biggest rival, and had a unique ad about how they were doing so!

It looked like a Klasky-Csupo cartoon largely because the production was done at Studio Pilot in Moscow, where a lot of Klasky-Csupo's talent came from.

(That, plus one of the creators, Charles Swenson, was a veteran of the studio, which was where he met the two other Russian creators.)

What do you think about a future CN hit show that lies on the cynical side of the Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism? Especially in contrast to the idealistic nature of shows like Adventure Time and Steven Universe?

I get the feeling it would be an action cartoon in the vein of Samurai Jack.

Would gumball count? The ending especially was very cynical, for all rob tried to prevent it (by forcing the cast to be more normal) they got sucked into the void anyway.

[up]Certainly. Though it's mostly in the later episodes like you said.

I'm thinking of something more like Legend of Korra or the Castlevania show on Netflix. (Albeit targeting a more general audience) Examples of cynicism would include the main protagonist being an anti-hero, many of the villains being irredeemably evil, and an emphasis on the dark side of human nature.

Something tells me a CN action cartoon that far into the cynical end of the scale would be a major point of contention among viewers. With detractors saying stuff like "the hero is an asshole" or "the villain is a one-dimensional monster with zero redeeming qualities".

Billy and Mandy seems like the closest existing Cartoon Network show to that tone.

I'd also be cool if it has an art style inspired by the works of Genndy Tartakovsky.

Adult Swim Games published games on Steam are likely the next victims of WBD.

A creator on Twitter frustrated on how little animated shows that are in active production called Cartoon Network basically dead… and it’s not. It’s just that the shows are taking an awful long time to get made.

I actually agree on Cartoon Network being dead. Or at least on Life Support. I think that most of the focus is on HBO Max/MAX as a content provider. The last of the cartoons from the previous era is Craig of the Creek which while good, is something people either love or feel apathy to. The Pandemic made money very wobbly and there is a lot of problems at WBD. Even before the merger, Cartoon Network had bad scheduling for a lot of there shows which may have killed interest for a demographic and pushed more people to Streaming. There's also the element of the closing of Cartoon Network Studios and their current original shows are all based other properties that existed beforehand with the exception of the miniseries The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe. Cartoon Network is most likely dead internally as Cable television is on the decline, but it could still comeback.

I hope CN does bounce back. Right now, Disney is doing the lions share of 6-11 targeting animation and the industry needs more.
