Daft, try get contacts of welfare offices, police departments specializing on minor protection and similar offices and tell them about your situation. They could be of help.

They don't really care otherwise.

So how common is it for people with ASD to be delayed in non-development milestones? Because I am still working on my license and figuring out what i wanna do with my life before i try to even look into college and I'm 23.

One of the major aspects of this Job Corps campus is getting people their driver's licenses. This is not exactly a facility for people for ASD, it's for anyone between the ages 16-24 interested in learning a trade and becoming productive members of society. There is like maybe 4 or 5 of us with ASD out of 150-ish students and I can only confirm myself, a semi-friend here, and that Dennis person I ranted about earlier.

A lot of the students here, mostly minorities, quite a few underprivileged, m just haven't had the opportunity or haven't taken the time to get their licenses or at least learner's permits. It has little to do with ASD and more to do with people in general because life happen.

I have my permit, but I've been told my last lesson a week ago I need more practice than the istructor has time for....which is kinda a bummer.

I for one am doing awesome.

As am I, but would either of us have mentioned it if the point hadn't been raised?

Could you guys help Daft Punch?

Give us a minute man, the people in this thread are spread out across a variety of timezones and it takes time for us to get here and read posts.

we wouldn't have such gaping security holes on the website.

We have gaping security holes? Since when?

@Daft, Gab has most of it covered already. but some more detail would help, if you're willing to share what it is you're trying to explain to them we might be able to help you put it into better language.

O and can I ask when them watching you aren't accidentally rude is a bad thing? My friend's do that for me all the time, and I do it for them. Part of caring for someone is telling them when they've made a mistake. Hell I have a friend who whenever we're out in public will go "Silas you're to loud" when I break the acceptable noise level. She does it because she know I don't notice, and it's great for me to know that someone is keeping an eye on me, the same way I've gone "No you can't go for a swim in the canal at 2am when stupidly drunk". We look out for each other, that's what people who care about each other do.

Was that sarcasm?

And upon reflection, my sister does frequently mention when I may be humming or whistling, or singing too myself too loudly.

Not my fault I have music in my soul, songs must be heard and shared and performed!

Nope no sarcasm, I'm genuinely not aware of any gaping security holes this site has. Unless you want to count our dependency on adds as a security hole.

@Gab

Yes, I was diagnosed by a psychologist. I live in the state of Pennsylvania, but we've tried a few therapists, and my mom only allows Christian therapists, which gets annoying. I do not have a school counsellor, unfortunately. Sometimes, I like to talk to the teachers so they give me advice. Much better than that of my parents. And my dad... Well, he has a hot temper, so do I, and we're both stubborn. I try not to upset him, but I have to just stay away from him to make that possible.

By federal law your school has to have a counselor. Even a private school.

Since always. TV Tropes is literally the least secure site I commonly visit. The last time I remember seeing a worse site was a student project in college.

The biggest issue is the lack of HTTPS. Which is already pretty serious, but many sites still don't have that either.

What really sets TV Tropes apart is that authentication is done by sending your password as a plaintext cookie. Your entire credentials are sent out for everyone to see every single time you visit a page anywhere on TV Tropes. No logging in, no logging out, no session management or anything. Incidentally, this means that the CAPTCH As that were later added are completely pointless because they're strictly optional.

There are likely other security issues, but I haven't tried looking for any. This is the site that accidentally gave a bunch of people admin access and let them permanently delete threads though.

Maybe we have one? I dunno... My mom works at the school, she's the secretary, and I'm well-acquainted with the staff. I'll see if we have one.

Your mom's the secretary? Is there a way the counselor can be trusted to keep your information private? It sounds like there's a possible conflict of interest there.

It's against the law for them to dish anything to Daft's mom unless she believes that Daft is about to hurt herself or someone else.

They can't even acknowledge that Daft requested an appointment. Should the mom be told, that's criminal and you can press charges. the counselor would loose their license and the school district will be fined at best, someone fired and fined at worst.

I'd been reading (and am still reading) a massive, really long article. At one point it discusses possible causes of autism.

Van de Water pursued the lead for the next several years, eventually coming to a conclusion that was both promising and troubling. In about a quarter of all cases of autism (she studied a cohort of 246), immunoglobulin antibodies from the mother were attacking fetal brain cells, causing changes in neuronal development in the unborn child. Why the attack was happening she could not say, but the overly aggressive antibodies were meeting little resistance, since the fetus does not yet have a solidly formed blood-brain barrier that more or less walls off the central nervous system from the circulatory one.

Van de Water injected the maternal antibodies into monkeys, then into mice. We watched videos of both with Jacqueline N. Crawley, a pioneer in mouse models of autism who wrote a book called What’s Wrong With My Mouse? Crawley sternly warned me not to ever call the rodents on the screen “autistic mice.” But it is impossible to call them anything else. They groomed obsessively, engaging in the kind of repetitive behavior that is a hallmark of autism. And given the choice to play either alone or with another mouse, they chose the former—a telling, damning solipsism that any parent of an autistic child will recognize at once.

The monkeys were worse, their symptoms so closely approximating human autism that it was impossible for me to watch them without experiencing extreme anxiety. One refused to recognize its mother, pacing its cage in a route from which it never deviated. Another did backflip after backflip, frightening its cage-mate. These animals were obviously, viscerally sick.

Okay, a quarter of autism cases involve the brain being damaged while the baby is still in the mother's womb. But not the rest. What I really want to know is, are the autistics who likely became autistic this way all low-functioning? Judging from the fact that these antibodies caused the animals to act very low-functioning, I figure that this type of brain damage doesn't create intelligent Aspies. I think this really needs to be looked into, as this indicates the cause of a very specific form of autism. Let's not forget that according to other sources I'd read (just articles, not scholarly research), supposedly 25% of autistics can't talk. In another words, a quarter. What's the cause there? What would a Venn diagram of the two types look like?

Just speculation based on limited knowledge, obviously, but when I hear "autism may be caused by ____" and then I see "__% of autistics have this" while the majority don't, and no indication whatsoever as to whether they are Aspies like us, or low-functioning, or what, if they are verbal or non-verbal, it pisses me off. This limited information doesn't help. Any time they see something that may cause autism, something that appears in a large percent of autistics, they should also say how low/high functioning they are. That would tell us a lot more.

I still, again admittedly with limited evidence, hold to my believe that autism would naturally be predisposed to be fairly high functioning, but outside factors affect it and make it lower functioning. I could be wrong. But any time I read something like this, it at the very least doesn't contradict my view.

Maybe the scientists don't know, and would need to perform more research?

You mean, they don't know how high/low functioning the autistic is? That would make sense if the studies were done over a couple years. The Aspies wouldn't be diagnosed until a later age. Which I think raises a set of questions of its own.

There's also the theory that autism is more like a fever than a single disease and that it might have several causes that all lead to the same sort of patterns.

Yup, I'd heard that also. I think it makes sense. It will be interesting to learn more. What separates the Aspies from the people who bang their head against the wall and throw things around the room and scream?
