I had a look around and I can't believe we don't have a thread on this.

linky

Record Store Day is an internationally celebrated day observed the third Saturday of April each year. Its purpose is to celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store and other bricks and mortar music store in the age of digital downloads.

Tragically it was overshadowed by Easter, but I'm sure we can all still appreciate our local LP store.

I sure appreciate mine, even if I buy C Ds rather than records... tongue The local store where I go has some great obscure stuff.

Judging by your avatar I bet you dosmile

Fun fact, while CD sales have a steady declined the last 15 years, sales for L Ps have actually increase by over 200%[1]

The numbers don't lie. Vinyl is clearly the medium of the futuretongue

Honestly, I think online music and digital file formats are the medium of the future, though there will always be room for physical media (and that will probly be mostly vinyl).

To be honest, most of the more recent music I've gotten has been downloaded- it's somewhat rare for me to buy C Ds these days, though I still do often enough to help keep the local store in business, at least... wink I own a few records as collector's items though, i.e. this one very rare single by The Sisters Of Mercy I have.

For the most part, though, I can't really get into the vinyl thing myself- partially due to all the hipsters being irritating about it and partially due to the expense it would take for me to get a record player and the extra effort of hooking it up to my computer to rip music off L Ps (which is fairly easily doable, but still). tongue When I have large amounts of money to spend (not very often these days!), I usually buy more music and/or recording equipment (microphones, cables, effects units, stands, etc). Or food. I just don't feel much like buying another thing to play music on right now... My computer (which has a decent sound card and for which I have two good preamps to choose from) and my dad's expensive stereo are enough.

Plus I dislike the crackliness I've sometimes encountered with vinyl on the occasions when I've listened to records elsewhere, though admittedly that could be a function of the record/record player being old/in poor shape, since it only happens occasionally.

Well you don't have to show your support by playing L Ps only buying 'emtongue

Have you considered using your L Ps for other household things, such as bowl?[1]

I actually bought a couple vinyl albums recently because they were both long since out of print, and by artist that a friend of mine is a fan of. He cleaned them for me and ripped them to MP3 even though I have a USB record player too. grin
