... Really? Because I was there for that discussion, and I don't remember anyone saying anything to the effect of the hybrid affinities being a rejection of the unchosen affinity.

I said it before. But yeah, I like to think of hybrid affinities being the arch-nemesis of the third affinity. Harmony-Supremacy and Purity is pretty obvious in this regard. Purity-Harmony I like to think of as being kind of luddites who want to make superhumans who don't need automation (and generally viewing biological life-no matter which planet it comes from-as superior to technological life). Purity-Supremacy views humanity as the superior lifeform because it reshapes its environment to suit it. This idea would horrify Harmony.

I have no idea how to navigate the tech web. Can someone give tips?

[up] Click and drag to move around the screen. Hover over the icons to see the effects/buildings/units unlocked by researching the tech. If there's multiple techs listed on a node you have to research the top one first. The lower ones can be done in any order there after. The coloured circle (if any) represents the affinity it contributes to. Multiple colours mean that the tech contributes to multiple affinities

There's a search button in the top left corner if you're looking for a specific tech, unit or building. Search for the unit or building and it will highlight the tech that you need to research to unlock it.

[up][up] In a less literal sense, you're going to end up picking up all of the branch techs in the first ring around the center and almost all of the leaf techs, all of the second-ring branch techs and some of the leaf techs, and then grow out from there to grab affinity points where you need them. Early priorities should be the techs that allow you to get strategic resources, since all of the strategic resources have good yields when worked. Look to get some of the techs that increase the yield of tile improvements, such as Vertical Farming.

Some techs are very situational. For example, the tech that unlocks the Mosaic Hull building or the ones that improve the yield of work barges are pretty useless if you don't have any oceanic bases.

Something really bugs me about C:BE that also bugged me about its spiritual predecessor SMAC: How can you justify in-universe the fact that a faction is automatically barred from building any Wonder (or Secret Project in SMAC) save for the national ones (i.e. Headquarters, Spy Agency and Culper Lodge) if another faction managed to complete building that project first? That doesn't make any sense to me; why should someone else beating me to the punch somehow deny me the ability to initiate or, if I already did so, continue working on my own version? The USA finishing the Manhattan Project and unlocking how to build nuclear bombs didn't stop the Soviet Union from doing the same within less than a decade.

[up]That's an issue that's common to all Civilization games.

I'd chalk it up to the wonder-building engineers in Civilization all being hipsters.

(US completely scraps the Great Library project)

Yeah, it's just how the Civ games have worked since the first. By definition, only one of a Great Wonder can exist in the world. Now, historically speaking, this is because only one civilization actually built any given project, but also because we cherry picked various projects to call "wonders of the world". Lots of civilizations built pyramids, but we think the Egyptian ones are extra cool for whatever reason.

If you really wanted an accurate simulation, a civilization would devote a portion of its resources to some project, with you having the ability to define it to some extent ("pile lots of bricks into a sort of pyramid-y shape"), but the final outcome is unique to you and doesn't poof out of existence because someone on the other side of the world that you haven't met yet had a similar idea.

But that's not how Civ games work, so that's that.

That doesn't really make sense when it comes to CivBE's global Wonders, which are mostly if not entirely pinnacles of technological progress that have great value for anyone who builds them. Or, in other words, they are comparable to the national wonders.

Example: Deep Memory. What exactly prevents any other faction from building their own Deep Memory wonder after one manages to beat the others to building the first instance?

At least with Civ VI you get some production back for the failed wonder.

[up][up] Game mechanics often don't make sense when applied to RL. Are we going to complain that we get wet when it rains now?
