Yeah, it's been confirmed. First thirty minutes of gameplay here.

So far it looks like the thrilling conclusion to the 5-star gaming franchise we've all been waiting for.

God, a crowbar again? Jesus, they could at least give him a pistol or something.

Also, I think giving him lines was a terrible mistake on Valve's part. Who is that, anyway? I don't recognize the voice actor.

Fire, air, water, earth...legend has it that when these four elements are gathered, they will form the fifth element...boron.

So friggin' hyped. What are those things at 15:35 he kills? Look like mutant clowns or something. Creepy.

Don't think I like the upgrade system, though. Attaching a flashlight to a crowbar is just dumb. And people are gonna rage about Gordon shaving his beard.

Edit: [up] Pretty sure that's David Hayter, not doing the Snake voice obviously.

I really didn't expect them to confirm the crossover with Portal. That was quite a shock.

[up]The upside is that Gordon and Chell are now a canon couple. Fanfics validated!

Never thought I'd see regenerating health and ironsights in a Half-Life game.

I like the fact that they're trying to make the world more "open-ended" and allow players to solve situations according to how they've leveled up Gordon, similar to Deus Ex, but I think the die-hards are now gonna start screaming "RUINED FOREVER!!!" or "VALVE'S DUMBED IT DOWN FOR CONSOLES FAGGOTS!!!111" now. It didn't look that tough to be honest, but then again this is the early Beta, so...

Yeah, I'm calling it a joke. tongue I read the comments, the entire vid is just of a guy playing, not the screen. He could say all sorts of shit and there's nothing to back it up. [lol]

It looks like we might finally have an unofficial answer as to why Half Life 3 has been such an enigma for so long. And given some of the comments below the article, there's a strong chance that's as close to the truth we'll ever get.

Searching For Half-Life 3

TL;DR version? The community's already guessed about half the reason - there's so much hype around the franchise that making a worthy successor would be a massive endeavor that might still fail to meet expectations. The other major issue was due to Valve's odd game development habits - namely, their tendency to only work on a project when they've got the "groove" of it and sometimes randomly shift onto different directions. This meant that a lack of motivation, plus repeated failures to get the project going in a solid direction eventually led to all interest in developing either HL 2 episode 3 or a full-blown sequel dying out.

So it went from a joke topic to a serious one just like that?

Why not? It IS the Half Life 3 thread and this is relevant to HL 3.

I read an article somewhere about this that pretty much quoted someone inside the company saying it wasn't worth doing anymore, so Valve was never going to. It also stated that they've pretty much shifted to hardware and Steam for their primary stuff and are just doing the odd game here and there. Also that the main story guy for the Half Life series (who I think was the one quoted) actually left the company anyway. So even if we get a third installment somewhere in the future, it'll be like the Star Wars stuff from now on. Ascended Fan Fiction and nothing more. No matter how good it is.

I'm actually surprised no enterprising fan of the series tried getting hired by Valve just to push a third one through, even if it was just their idea of how the series should continue/conclude.

It's because they're too distracted with DOTA 2 and all that crap. Damn thing should have been Blizzard's problem, not Valve's.

Unfortunately, Valve's decided the multiplayer market's their thing. They don't want to do any more single player games. As long as we drop any hopes of more Half Life games, that's fine. They'll keep working on their engine and selling it as a developer kit for aspiring designers, and we'll keep getting games.

According to IMDB the last audiovisual thing Marc Laidlaw worked on was a Portal short movie called Portal: Origins. He's also linked to the announced Half Life movie and a short set in that universe, but there's no dates involved. He's an author in his own right, so he's probably just off-screen working with books.

Valve has pretty much lost all of its old devs.

As for the multiplayer thing, well I guess sell hats and shinies pays for itself in the end.

Newell has said yes to such questions before, only to silently reverse course. It's best to remember how Valve operates in that they're willing to abandon an idea and move onto other projects quite suddenly if they lose motivation.
