That paragraph was added, as far as I can tell with no discussion, on the fifteenth of August of this year. Previous to that edit, there was no requirement that a Token also had to be Flat.

To me, that addition is substantially redefining the trope without discussion, and it should be removed. Reading it outside of the rest of the page, it also smacks of complaining and editorializing.

This trope is prone to misuse. A minority character does not become a Token Minority simply by virtue of being the only minority in the main cast. Nor does the character become a token just because he was created with the intent to appeal to minority audiences, diversify the cast, or deflect charges of prejudice. A minority character is a token only if he lacks personality, character development, and significance within the story. Usually they will have little personality beyond being generically good and little significance other than helping out the more significant white characters.

Well, then I favour removing it altogether. I think that the rest of the description is fine.

I was about to say that I don't think the trope requires a character to be flat, but given what was just said about the editing history, I think the obvious answer is to revert the change and suspend whoever made it for not using proper procedure to change trope definitions.

If it's not even an original part of the definition, then yeah, we don't even need to debate this. Cut it.

I went ahead and removed it, since it seems people overwhelmingly agree to get rid of it and it's silly to get bogged down on removing something that was added with no discussion just a few months ago.

(Does anyone know why the page says not to put any quotes on it?)
