Is this popular interpretation colored by irritation, or is that really the only way to read what he said?
{cough}BULLHOCKEY!{cough}
On a more serious note, yeah, that's a load of crap. I don't need to see my heroes constantly have their lives fricked over every waking second of the day. I've been reading Superman's Bronze Age era recently, and there really hasn't been anything bad that's happened to him or his loved ones. (Not that he has that many Pre Crisis, or at least any that are still alive.) And you know what? It's still a frikking blast, and more fun than some of the stuff that's around nowadays. I'm not saying that Superhero's lives should always be a walk in park, but you don't have to try and make every other Superhero one up Peter Parker and his manpain. (Seriously, the man should be in a psycheward by this point; accidentally killing his girlfriend with his own webbing is the least of his problems.)

Shit, now the first Rebirth crossover/event makes total sense.
@DC Marriages: Can't find anything from Didio but this is Johns on things he wanted back from about a month ago:

You're aware you're part of those who took those things away in the first place, aren't you, Geoff?
Was about to say that, and I like the guy most of the time!
Geoff is a writer of extremes. When he's good, he's damn good, but when he's bad he leaves everything he touches toxic.
His record with minority characters isn't great as well, I will say that.
x4 He is. The interviews goes on to feature him pretty much saying "Sorry for the N52, none of us on the ground were ready for it and the ones in charge didn't have a goal in mind for the future. This is part of my apology for everything, even the things I had no control over."
He talked about many characters who got screwed over(like Superboy), had their origins confusingly changed, stopped looking anything like their old selves etc.
We might never get an apology out of Didio's mouth but Johns will do everything to make things right or as good as they can get with the resources he has.
Johns seems like a good guy. Unlike Didio and especially Berganza.
I hope Superboy comes back.
I also want Jackson Hyde to dye his hair blonde, shave it & start going by Kaldur.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Berganza hasn't been a public presence for close to 5 years for many good(for us) reasons.

Doesn't mean he's not a perverted asswipe. And a bad editor too.
Which are part of the reasons.
The day he quits(because he apparently has some hold over people higher up at Warner so he can't by fired by DC people)is the day everyone from DC to fans can breathe easier.
Wait, what is his problem again?
Let's see if you can get past my Beelzemon. Mephiles, WARP SHINKA!Sexual harasser. Got demoted years ago from his former higher position in the company and is now stuck as one of the many group editors because only Warner can apparently fire him. Things heated up about him again a few months back when the Vertigo restructuring started and as part of tying it closer to WB and DC the long time executive editor was fired(since the people would now report to people at DC first without a middleman)which made people demand Berganza would be fired as well.
Based on what we know he seems to have connections to people higher up than Didio & Co and might be doing a "If you fire me I'll do X!" only we have no idea what X is. No one at DC likes him by now.

Okay, that was actually very good from Johns. Good for him, since it's rare to find people in comics being willing to actually admit missteps.
I still can't help but think that John's apologizing for the New 52 would feel more sincere if his Rebirth special had pinned the meta-textual blame on Flashpoint instead of Watchmen.
Hyping up Barry Allen while shitting on Watchmen kind of sends a probably-mostly-unintentional message that DC comics hasn't been good since 1986. Which is really drastic and untrue! And probably not his real intention since that's not at all what he's saying in his interviews about Rebirth.
You're just in time. Bayble Cuber's going to watch an inkle dribble adventure from days of old on my holo-pyramid viewer. It's both's fault in story. Flashpoint changed things but then even more was changed by others.
If you want to go Morrison on it, Manhattan is pretty much the editors and executives(who I think Morrison has already talked about before?)..
He isn't blaming Watchmen, he is blaming people who think Watchmen is the only way to write comics. And yeah it was kinda bad to just wipe away Flashpoint from blame, but eh it was kinda forced on him to be a reboot. He just wanted it to be an au arc, before getting into stuff like Zoom vs Kadabra, or the Zoom family.
but I don't think Di Dio is all that bad. Yeah he has said some dumb things, but he also tries to bring new kinds of books and keep them around. He is the reason All Star Western lasted so long.

Wow, he had an AU arc forcibly turned into a reboot on him? Poor guy, that was a dick move.
Everything points to Flashpoint not being set up to be an Reboot. Hell take out the 2 pages at the end with Pandora and it's exactly like an au arc where everything goes back to normal.
"He isn't blaming Watchmen, he is blaming people who think Watchmen is the only way to write comics"
Even if that's what Johns is trying to say (and it probably is) its hard for the reader to get that from a story which goes "Watchmen broke that DC Universe". The metaphor is too simple to convey the nuanced idea he wants to get across.
And really, the message is supposed to be about honoring and restoring the history of DC comics and its characters, and the Watchmen stuff muddles that idea instead of supporting it.
But I really need to stop harping on this, because the actual ongoing books have all started really strong, which is what really matters. Tom King is writing Batman, Pat Gleason is drawing Superman, and Midnighter is getting a new miniseries. Things are good.

You're just in time. Bayble Cuber's going to watch an inkle dribble adventure from days of old on my holo-pyramid viewer.he has explicitly said that is what he meant in more than 1 interview. I do agree that it could get the point across confusingly but 1. we don't even know where this is going to go and won't for 2 years and 2. Johns said manhattan wont be taken out in a punch battle.
It be great if we get Rorschach back. Such a sad end he got. Very, very tragic.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
Not in those exact words.
But the basic gist is that they should never be happy as their duty as heroes must always fuck up their lives.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
