Surprisingly for the DEP, it sounds like a very light 9. It's really more harsh than heavy, courtesy of screeched vocals and erratic rhythm patterns. But the guitar sound and the way drums are in the mix make it lighter.

7.5 - Prog + punk = Pronk? The riffing feels a bit too comfortably hard rocky almost and the scratchy production neuters some of its impact. It's mostly up to the drumming to deal with that here.

It's an 8, creeping to a 9 near the end.

I would say a 9, but the beginning makes it a borderline 10.

How about this? I think that this is a 10, albeit a light one due to the calm part

6. For a band that people like to claim as one of the hardest hitting to ever exist, NIN's material is usually midrange at most. Sure, you got blasts of distorted fuzzy guitar and a droning beat, but outside of that there's nothing to really get it above a 6. The bridge kills it, too.

1.5 - Eerie and intimidating in terms of its mood but beyond the repetitive thud of the percussion, it's pretty airy, like a haze of flies around a corpse.

I would say a 9 due to its hard-hitting bass drum beat, and its chugging, but melodic riff.

Somewhere between a 6 and a 7. There are some loud riffs but the softer parts prevent ir from getting higher than that.

A hard 7 or a light 8. It has the classic thrash sound to it.

6 - Wow, who gave Three Days of Grace the leftovers from the hard rock garage sale? There's this persistent chug going on in the background of it the rest of the song revolves around like a limp post Linkin Park style act and it ends up just further sapping the barely passable level of heft that was present.

[up][up] I think it's a hard 7 or low 8.

[up] A high 8. It has a little too much melody. The beginning brings down the rating.

A hard 8. Has the classic death metal sound to it, with a mix industrial that Fear Factory is known for.

8. A quick, hard-hitting sludge metal track.

5.5 - One of those cases where a band's idea of heavy and how heavy actually works seem to be in direct contrast. Sure it's a product of modern times but the foot-tapper crowd raising rhythms and shiny clean choruses seem more like some weird mutation of old cock rock tropes into a swoophairedouchebagcore context, with riffing serving more like rhythmic placeholder like the out-of-breath harsh vocals.

A low 8. It sounds old Blind Guardian infused with a more demonic extreme metal styling.

BTW I'm glad you appreciated that Dead Kennedys video.

9. Definitely Lamb of God, they relentlessly attack you with noise. Even the cleaner vocals aren't all that melodic.

I wouldn't describe Lamb of God as relentlessly attacking anything with noise. It's a pretty energetic, groovy track with some bite, but it's not exactly... well, I'll wait for my pick. As for yours...

A hard 7. The smoother clean vocal timbres, more restrained melodic passages, and flatter guitar and drum production than I think is appropriate sucks some of the brutality that's established with that killer opening. The noisiest and thrashiest sections approach a light 9, and are honestly pretty badass, but I feel like this could have gone way harder and way more fast and loose, as it were.

Anywho.

6.5 - Mathcore bands attempting to be intimidating resembles a bunch of snotty nosed high school brats attempting to scare a Black Bloc with the equivalent of swim noodles. Sure they can shout and scream but their weaponry lacks any kind of solid weight behind it - empty aggression.

[up][up][up] Or it could be that you just don't like the Dillinger Escape Plan much, which is understandable but doesn't necessarily call for catty and obnoxious observations about a genre that you don't strike me as having a particularly deep familiarity with compared with other varieties of metal. Seriously, chill your pill.

[up] 8. The more spacious bits have more punch to them. I like the sloppy junkyard dog meanness here—Eyehategod have always been good at that—but they've done heavier and nastier.

Utarm, "Minus the Divine" (Minus the Divine, Turgid Animal, 2009).

Apologies for the slightly lengthier track here. It's maybe the best example of this guy's approach I was able to dredge up at short notice.

4.5 - Eerie, ominous, vast, not of this earth, and so on - sonically irritating as likely intended but also not very dense, weighty, or chunky. This seems to approximate something akin to the eerier overlaid effects other bands might use to compliment their riffing but the problem is that it can't do the same job of said riffing so you're left mostly with sound effects that are grating the same way standing in a subway while construction is going on, but won't splatter you messily across the walls or tracks the same way the actual train or construction tools would.
