How much customization is there as far as loadout? Is it possible play a mostly melee-oriented character?

So, what's up guys? Gonna try my hand at this "GMing" thing again...
So what this RP is, it's based very heavily in the Unreal Tournament series, although knowig Unreal is hardly necessary to participate - it centers around a worldwide-screened future Blood Sport, where Death Is Cheap. Being based on an FPS game, the league has straight-up deathmatches and more objective-based games for the teams to compete in and so forth.
The league setup around the tournament is more like Professional Wrestling, one team is recognised as the current "champion" in that field and other teams have to earn the right to challenge them for that title - although this isn't to say any team is restricted to just one type of match. Teams often have feuds with each other and within the teams themselves, sometimes they're mocked up for the crowd and at other times the players genuinely hate each other and given that they all compete in a Blood Sport, there's no better way to hammer out some issues than to kill each other a few times over.
The main barrier for this RP is that it involves heavy player-versus-player combat - and making such a thing fair to everyone involved is somewhat of a challenge.
The game will lack much of a centralised plot, it'll be more about your characters and their feuds within their teams and with others, although I'll generally handle some angles that other people can jump in on.
So basically, here goes nothing, who wants to step into the arena?
