well, my first exposure to Hawkeye was in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, which was expanded upon in the Avengers movie. were those two interpretations true to the original character?

Yeah, actually. The cartoon in particular nailed the character. The movie, I felt, was kinda lacking in the snark and short-temper, but I think it's justified due to the story.

It's kind of hard to demonstrate personality when you have 8 minutes of screen time and you are a robot for 6 of them.

He still could have demonstrated personality even as a robot; the staff didn't take away the characters' identity. Selvig, for example, still talks like Selvig. Hawkeye is very consistently portrayed as a hard-edged, serious, all-business agent. They completely missed the ball on the snark and ego. I think the writers overcompensated for his status as "the guy with the bow" by trying to make him look overly professional.
