The first villain for Luke Cage is rumored to be Cottonmouth.

Wait hold on.

Cottonmouth? I'm not saying it's racist or offensive or anything, but man is that an unfortunate name.

Well that's the name of a highly venomous snake species. Don't really see what's unfortunate about it.

I think they were referring to the whole connotation between black people and cotton. But yeah it's an actual species of snake so I wouldn't worry.

Most snake names (or as I like to call them, snames) are at least vaguely threatening, though.

This one? Not so much.

On the other hand, I'm sure we all remember how deadly the Cottonmouth from Kill Bill was.

Animals tend to be named descriptively rather than for a thing that sounds cool or threatening.

The cottonmouth has a distinctive mouth so it gets called a cottonmouth. So that way when you see a cottonmouth you can go 'oh no that's a cottonmouth'

Yeah, but there are Snake names which sound more threatening...and snakes which are more dangerous for humans.

I wonder if the Serpent Society, etc. members with the cool names bully the lame-sounding members like the aforementioned Cottonmouth and Puff Adder.

Could be worse. They could be called blind snake.

Serpent Society is also the fake name Marvel initially gave to Captain America 3 when they were revealing Phase 3.

Then it was'renamed' Civil War.

Would they do the snake themed weird villains or the KKK with the serial numbers filed off version though?

Talking snake villains and black villains made me imagine this as a pimp themed snake themed black villain. Yikes.

Though from what I gather the original Cottonmouth, absurdly excessive pimpness aside, is a fairly decent character overall, so they could rework him, I suppose.

Yeah, no way that guy is making it in.

I mean, the first one you posted looks fairly modern going by the art, so why is he wearing some kind of old-school zoot suit pimp outfit?

They can always have him in a different suit or something.

I know. For all of Marvel's costume know how, this really doesn't translate. It's pretty obvious they're going to change it.

Part of the point of being a supervillain is getting to wear whatever you want, and anyone who makes fun of your fashion sense gets thrown into a vat of acid.

But then that guy may become the Joker, and then you have a problem.
