(Cross-posted on the Literature forum). I'm going back to an old concept which was a post-apocalyptic steampunk reimagining of Volsunga Saga/Saga of the Volsungs set in Iceland. I want to flesh out as many of the characters as possible, including and especially Grimhild and Atli because it's quite easy to portray them as 2D villains. Are there any essential character traits I should remember in doing this? For example what personality traits do other tropers who know the saga think of when they hear the names "Sigurd" (or Sigurdr, Sigurdur) or "Gudrun" or "Gudrún" or "Brynhild" or "Fáfnir"? What makes these characters recognisable to you in terms of personality? (so not stuff like Gram or being a dragon).
