^.^ I am proud. Hooray! I was randomly selected by an algorithm! It's like winning a raffle, except the only prize is self-satisfaction. I shall be satisfied by this all day.

Given how relatively new to MLP I am, this actually does feel like a rare event.

@Tobias: I like that "Celestia and Luna are driving the sun and moon" analogy! I think it also fits with what was shown when Twilight tried to move them when she got the extra alicorn powers in "Twilight's Kingdom". It looked like she was moving them around in the manner of someone who Drives Like Crazy! [lol]

  • Twilight: Okay, the y-axis, I can understand, but an inverted x-axis?! Who DOES that?!

If Celestia and Luna being able to move the sun and moon (respectively) was due to raw power, then the "Freaky Friday" Flip episode would not work the way it did, at least with respect to who's pushing around which sky object. I have to assume it's a special talent unique to each of them.

This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...

Well, according to the first issue of the "Reflections Arc" of the comics, Luna can also move the sun.

It takes a lot of effort but she can do it.

Even just going off of non-comic material, it'd probably be a fair assumption to think Luna could do it with enough effort/training. After all, Celestia canonically managed the moon in Luna's absence.

Yeah, I always assumed they could both do both. There's no real reason to assume Luna is weaker than Celestia.

Hell, we see Luna overpowering Celestia in the flashbacks in "Princess Twilight". I know the comics declared something about her being possessed by some evil murder-spirit or something to create Nightmare Moon but in the show, Nightmare Moon is just presented as Luna being really, really mad.

Celestia was forced to resort to the Elements of Harmony to deal with her. Twice. She is at the very least Celestia's equal.

[up]My personal interpretation is that she was possessed by Pazuzu.

Her head turns 180 degrees the shot right before she turns into Nightmare Moon! What more could you need!?

Well, according to the first issue of the "Reflections Arc" of the comics, Luna can also move the sun.
"Reflections" is hard to reconcile with the show in general. Luna fills in for Celestia for a whole week. Yet in "A Royal Problem", Luna utterly fails at filling in for Celly for just a day—even though she thought it would be easy beforehand.

[up]And it's baffling that Luna would wait for a whole week to bring in the Mane Six (and Spike) the moment she found that she couldn't get through the mirror. I think.

Also, who is the pony from the beginning? The pony that says, "there is more then one of everything, Twilight Sparkles"? I feel like he's from some overarching plot line because I saw him again during Linkara's review of "Neigh Anything".

[up][up]Wait, Pazuzu was supposed to be Satan? I never watched The Exorcist. I only know the name "Pazuzu", the whole "turn your head 180 degrees" thing, "your mother rots in hell", and that the production was apparently cursed.

Or was that The Grudge? I forget.

[up] Thanks for that!

To play Devil's Advocate, as Sereg would point out re: Celestia and Luna, ordinary unicorns used to do their job. Therefore, unicorns are the master race perhaps ordinary "mortals" are just that strong in this world.

[up]It could also be possible that those unicorns had built a magical object that helped ten lowly unicorns do things like that.

I want their backstory now. Those six unicorns AND the three allicorns!

After all, if being a allicorn is something that can be earned, does that mean that Celestia and Luna originally unicorns? If so, how did they earn both wings and horns?

It's mentioned that the team of Unicorns who did it eventually burned out all of their magic and had to be rotated, and that Starswirl the Bearded once attempted to do it himself and wound up prematurely aging himself fairly significantly. So being able to do it steady for a millenia is still no small feat.

I personally still have them treated as at least psuedo-deities in my fanon, if only because the presence of a seemingly-immortal, immensely powerful being is going to do that to people. Though it's worth noting they're more akin to Liches than actual deities, it just so happens their Phylacteries are the sun and moon.

[up][up] What's funny about Cadance is Lauren Faust intended her to be a Unicorn and expressed confusion over how she earned her wings so young, but in a tie-in book she was born a Pegasus, so instead of earning her wings she earned a horn and magic.

[up][up][up] There are two Expanded Universe books that answer both of those questions, and I personally take both answers as being canon unless the show outright contradicts them. The books are "The Journal of the Two Sisters" and "Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell".

  • Celestia and Luna were born as alicorns, like Flurry Heart was. Since they were born before Equestria was founded (so far as I know/remember), I still take it as accurate that they could be born as alicorns yet claim that Flurry Heart is the first alicorn to be born since the founding of Equestria.
  • Cadance was born as a pegasus, and I would need to look up the exact story behind how she gained her alicorn status, but it's explained in "Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell". [nja] by lalalei.

If Celestia and Luna being able to move the sun and moon (respectively) was due to raw power, then the "Freaky Friday" Flip episode would not work the way it did, at least with respect to who's pushing around which sky object. I have to assume it's a special talent unique to each of them.

Celestia said in that very episode that moving the Moon is "even easier" than moving the Sun. Celestia also manage to move the Moon with no problem without Luna's talent for a thousand years.

The comic confirms that Luna finds moving the Sun extremely difficult.

All this confirms that moving the Sun is much harder than moving the Moon and Celestia is stronger than Luna. This implies that the Sun is much bigger than the Moon.

The comic confirmed in a picture that the Moon is a celestial-scale object.

And Amy Keating Rogers confirmed that she sees the Equestrian Sun as identical to our own and Celestia as moving it with brute force.

Saying that Celestia and Luna can't be very strong because they get worfed is exactly as stupid as saying, "Darkseid is able to hurt Superman, which proves that none of Superman's feats of super strength or invulnerability are real".

And yes, Cadance earned her alicornhood by redeeming a villain and Celestia and Luna were born alicorns prior to Equestria's founding.

Also, I loved the legends in Campfire Tales despite not even knowing they were from the comics at the time so I prove you don't need the comics to care.

EDIT: Of course, I don't consider alicorns to be gods anyway, just like I don't consider Kryptonians to be gods. I don't even consider Not-Equals to be gods.

The comic also had them lassoing the moon and dragging it close enough to the planet that they could walk to it, so I'm not exactly inclined to take that as a hard statement of how physics work in the ponyverse.

But I really don't feel like going through this argument for the umpteenth time, so I'm gonna go do something else now. tongue
