Technically, to damn to to wish for someone to burn in Hell. As such, while it is considered extremely mild nowadays, it has a pretty nasty meaning and was originally considered extremely serious.
Vulgarity is always a mater of cultural context, really. For example in Quebec, which had to deal with a lot of religious whatnot until relatively recently, still considers sacrilege to be the height of swearing.
Although they admittedly to it really angrily and with X2 combo chain multipliers, but still.

Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.Yeah, it's one of those things where the technical meaning is really pretty awful, but it's so common that most people don't view it as that bad unless you're specifically using it in a religious context. At this point the secular version is so much more common that unless you're in an extremely conservative area (or, you know, in a church) it won't ruffle too many feathers.
Reaction Image RepositoryHeh, this disscussion about "Asshole" being censored but "Ass" being okay reminds me of this joke from the Angry Video Game Nerd's video of the infamous Action 52. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=t_IAu3-0DrA
My favourite part of censorship is overzealous automated filters. Way back when I used to play WoW, I was on their forums and saw someone had typed "g****". This confused me and several other posters, because one, the sentence wasn't heated at all, and two, what kind of expletive starts with a 'g'? Turns out he'd typed "grape". I imagine (hope) their filters have been upgrade since then.
FE: Genealogy Story Run 7PM PT Sun, Mon, Fri; Expert Unicorn Overlord 7PM PT Wed, Thurs: http://www.twitch.tv/kuroitsubasatenshiIt was especially amusing during one period where the filters also applied to item links. Every so often you'd have some one linking their cloak item, and see an item link to "D**** of Whatever."
What matters in this life is much more than winning for ourselves. What really matters is helping others win, too. - F. Rogers.they once censored 'Idiot' on one channel where an episode of MLP aired
I forget which one though
New theme music also a boxTreehouse, I believe. A Canadian channel, oddly enough, but I suppose it's also a channel for Toddlers so eh?
I say Oddly enough because Canadian Cartoons have historically been allowed to get away with much more than American Cartoons. At least until Steven Universe rolled around. Goddamn Space Lesbians.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes. The same channel also censored the word "Loser" too, which makes the famous mental breakdown scene in Party Of One unintentionally extra amusing.
Here's some adorable Twidash, for anyone who cares. https://derpibooru.org/1257217?scope=scpe41c974ef0763e8da43dc43ebabbf07d2217ae376

you mean gosh darned spaces alien rocks
we will have none of that lewd talking in here!
New theme music also a boxAh yes, the Scunthorpe Problem. Always fun.
Reaction Image RepositoryOh, I also like how "Peeved" is considered a swear word in Equestria. Now I wonder what'll happen if you were to put someone who has a tendency to swear constantly {Be it a real person or a fictional character} in Equestria.
Princess Celestia would strike them down from on high!
New theme music also a boxAnytime people go for an expletive more offensive than "peeved", they'll get censored by somepony interrupting them.
FE: Genealogy Story Run 7PM PT Sun, Mon, Fri; Expert Unicorn Overlord 7PM PT Wed, Thurs: http://www.twitch.tv/kuroitsubasatenshiI read a fanfic where that actually happened. Any time any pony tries to cuss, somepony else interrupts them, or something spontaneously makes a loud noise that drowns them out. Twilight wonders what the hay is going on, and eventually figures out that there's a spell covering all of Ponyville causing this.
Turns out Celestia cast the spell, just because she thought it would be funny. IIRC, the fic ends with Twi telling Celestia, "That's really fucking stupid."
Apparently, typing "after" in Monster Hunter Tri multiplayer servers was deemed inappropriate.
Would the spell still work if somepony wrote down what they were going to say and gave it to the pony they wanted to say it to? Would an animated drawing of Celestia appear and remove the bad word in question?

We are all made of star stuff. Very, very weird star stuff.I imagine circumstances would contrive to blot or otherwise destroy the word.
Unless it was written in a really nice cursive, because that would just make it funnier.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.Wait, why?
This song needs more love."Idiot" used to be what they called the mentally challenged. It's one of those cases of Values Dissonance that's horrible and hilarious at the same time when you look up the name of old charities and come up with stuff like "the New Haven Home for Idiots" or something like that.
Keeping the theme of this thread, "after" can mean ass in German according to what I've looked up.
We are all made of star stuff. Very, very weird star stuff.@Ogodei: "Idiot" specifically is for the most severe mental disability. The old terminology was "moron" for mild mental disability, "imbecile" for moderate, and "idiot" for severe/profound. This history is why some people consider them to be ableist slurs, although most people who use these terms nowadays are referring to general lack of intelligence rather than as an intentional reference to mentally disabled people (although there is also the argument that insulting someone for lacking intelligence in itself is ableist). I've seen similar arguments concerning the term "derpy" or "derp" (to tie this back to MLP), with some claiming that it's intended to mock mentally disabled people and others claiming that they are using it to mean a more general foolishness/temporary lapse of judgement or mistake that anyone could make.

"Idiot" came from the ancient Greek word for an unskilled worker (the implication being they were too stupid to contribute anything more) and "imbecile" dated to the 16th century from a French word that came from a Latin word meaning "weak" and only became associated with mental retardation in the time of the Napoleonic Wars half a century before psychology became a science. Note that only "moron" was coined as a medical term; the classic example of the euphemism treadmill has as much to do with already existing ableism in choosing terms as well as, well, the euphemism treadmill.

This just makes me think of "idioten" as vocalized in the German recording of 'Be Prepared'. Because who needs an excuse for awesome music?
Speaking of overzealous censors, another commonly censored common word is "who're" as in who are.
Keeping the theme of this thread, "after" can mean ass in German according to what I've looked up.
As far as I know, "after" is not a word in German at all. The German word for ass is "arsch". Damn is also a cognate in German (verdammt).
Edit: I looked it up, and "after" does in fact mean "anus" in German. TIL. However, it appears to be an anatomical term, rather than crude slang like "ass".

Warning, bad language in the tags.
I agree that English is a bad language, but it's the standard on Derpibooru.
