I'm not really familiar with any of the Alien movies other than the first one, so I don't have that problem. 
Heh, this is gonna be a fun chapter, I can tell!
You should watch the 2nd one at some point. Even though you arn't a Horror fan, Aliens is more of a action movie with some horror elements. Just don't watch any of the films after that. Those ones suck really bad.

You have to see the second one at least, that's the best one!
One thing that strikes me about Alien is that it gives you no indication that Riply is any more important than the other characters. She's not even in the foreground of the introductory shots. Also, the black guy doesn't die first.
Apparently they wrote all the characters without any clue who was going to ply them, race, even gender. Then stuck in the actors they thought best worked for the given role. Hence why Ripley doesn't have any of the usual "Action heroine" cliches. She was written as a character, not as a female character.

Yeah, they should write more stuff like that. Just write out the general plotlines and slot actors in there later.
