Why does that point matter?
Because it means the Gameboy Micro was more or less obsolete as soon as it was released. It had no purpose. The 2DS is current hardware, but in a simplified form, ergo it has purpose.
Because the Micro was basically dead-on-arrival, a mostly-irrelevant retread of the dying generation put out just as the next one was underway. Why buy a Game Boy Advance and not be able to play the new games coming out, when you could buy a DS, which had a GBA slot, and play everything through that? The fact it couldn't play GBC games was moot; neither could the Micro.
The 2DS isn't coming out at the same time as the next generation of handhelds, being produced concurrently with the other varieties of 3DS. It can still play all the new games just as well as the other 3DS consoles can. It'll be victim to consumer confusion, undoubtedly, but it isn't really dead-on-arrival.

Moon◊Well, I believe the vanilla DS has been discontinued at this point, so people aren't going to see them next to each other in the store and mistake them for each other. Hopefully the fact that it's cheaper and has a different name will make people interested ask questions about it.
Of course, that means they'll be asking sales clerks, who can't seem to handle explaining the difference between Wii and Wii U, so we'll see what happens there.
I have all the . All of it.
"So, our 3DS seems to be making a lot of money, but in today's world some people can't afford it." "Hmm... what if we make a poor-man's 3DS with no 3D! And you know what, screw hinges, those are too expensive." "MR. IWATA, YOU HAVE DONE IT AGAIN"
Well, it's nice of Nintendo to make an (even more) affordable version of the 3DS.

🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaThree words.
About. Bloody. Time.
Gamestop is still selling new D Sis.
But with the micro, was that before or after they decided to abandon the whole "the DS is the third system line for Nintendo, not the successor to the Gameboy" thing (home console, Gameboy handheld, and DS being the three lines).
As someone who has only one eye, and thus can't see 3D at all, this seems like it could be cool.
But why the hell did they remove the clamshell design? That's just stupid, and removes the entire point of it being a handheld.
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."Quick question: are the screens the size of a 3DS or a 3DS XL?
Because if it's the size of a 3DS, I don't think it's as anti-portable as everyone claims.
🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaClamshell devices take more time to engineer. More moving parts, more points of possible failure as well.
I think I read that the screens are the size of the 3DS's.
That said, it appears to come with a carrying case. So that's good. I should learn to read.

Actually, that's sold separately, unless I'm reading this French(?) commercial wrong.
The 3DS is also well known for having hinge problems, so I guess it's a preventative measure?
Also, it's clearly aimed at kids, so I guess removing the hinge significantly lowers the likelihood of accidental breakage.
Yeah, a lot of the comments about it I saw on Reddit were from parents who are going to get this for their kids, since they've been afraid that they'd be too rough with it and break the hinge or something.
I find it amusing how easy it is to do the math on this decision. :P
3DS has noted hinge problems, and children younger than seven can't use the 3D effect. The first set of Pokemon games for 3DS is coming out soon. Release a cheaper, hingeless, non-3D version of the 3DS the same day that Pokemon comes out.
some people just like having the two screens flat as opposed to a tiny bit tilted, and having the 3ds like that makes a funny clunky sound.
The internet is a waste of time, and that's exactly what's right about it-William GibsonThe product trailer has a shot of a kid playing it, and it looks to be the same size as a standard 3DS.
IT PRINTS SLIGHTLY LESS MONEY
🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaAre you kidding? Launching next to a Pokemon game is probably going to do wonders for it.
_*SLIGHTLY MORE
You know, things like this are why I love Nintendo.
🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaMy thoughts on this:
I have no interest in buying a 2DS, but I can see the logic and appreciate it.
Cheaper to make and cheaper pricetag not to mention marketed for children -> More consumers -> More profit -> More budget for awesome games.
I have no complaints.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! This sounds great! :D I'm going to get one.
The Protomen enhanced my life.
No. The Gameboy Micro came out after the Nintendo DS was already out. The 2DS is still firmly planted in this generation.
