IINM that largely took root after 9/11, which started the War on Terror.

That makes sense if true, post 9/11 is when we started focusing on middle eastern extremism at the expense of all other kinds. And it helps that since the majority of people in the US are Christian so they aren't going to blame their religion for the actions of few, but Islam gets no such clemency because it's scary and foreign (read: brown).

I think there was some research done which stated that terror trends tend to go on for about 30 years (separatists->communists->jihadists). Actions of the few matter little, it's the flavour of the decade that matters. They just happen to be more active right now.

Now I'm wondering who will be the next flavor.

Probably Yellow Peril 2.0 if things in Korea really go to hell.

Considering Singapore is a nation-state, even trying to steal radioactive materials to make a dirty bomb would be enough for Singaporean authorities to make anyone caught and convicted of this dance the hemp fandango.

Guess the wannabee bad guys can't cross their fingers to get away if arrested by the police with a little of radioactive material.

That's assuming what winds up happening isn't someone checking into a Singaporean hospital and dying soon after of acute radiation poisoning.

Explosion at an Ariana Grande concert in northern England. Fatalities. Nothing else known at the moment.

Two explosions, at the end of the concert just as people were beginning to leave. She was a draw for youngsters, so most of the people caught up in it are younger people, including children, and their parents/guardians.

Most of the reports coming out right now are indicating 'shrapnel-like injuries' and that a lot of local businesses are pitching to help get children separated from their relatives reunited, and offering free food, drinks, board and taxi rides to those affected.

All countries mentioned in the report are undergoing a rethink in increasing security for public events, including demonstrations.

Singapore bans them if it involves foreigners or has a serious political agenda.

Utterly pointless security theatre. You won't know that something is vulnerable until somebody has exploited it. There will always be weak points. Feeling more like a Red Queen situation here.

The attack in Manchester was apparently in public space before the arena not in it

It was in the lobby between the areana and the attached train station.

So far we've had no group claim responsibility, which feels weird, it's leaving me anxious.

Apparently it was a suicide attack, so its probably not the IRA. That was never their MO AKAIK.

ISIL supporters are celebrating it on the web, so no surprise there.

Attacking completely civilian venues was also not part of the general strategy (not that it didn't happen). Generally military, economic and other government related targets.
