Tyler: It might be just me; I'm not well-versed in these matters. But I don't understand why you'd want to re-admit into your country somebody who, there's a very good chance, has committed violent crimes because of extremist beliefs; or, at the very least, aided and abetted such crimes. The main function of the criminal justice system is to protect society; and when someone commits a violent crime, they are considered a threat and forced to undergo incarceration and/or rehabiliation. It might sound a bit drastic; but from that line of reasoning, it makes sense to me to not re-admit them at all, or to arrest them.

With people who claim they just made a mistake, and completely renounce the violent extremism they witnessed, however, simple probation would work probably.

The thinking, as I understand it, is that there's no evidence of what they did that would stand in a court of law.

Mind you, I don't agree with the sentiment behind it, but that's par for the course in lawfare.

As for your second comment, given that a common interpretation of the Koran (Qu'ran, or however you transliterate the book's name tongue ) by RIFs is that lying to infidels is acceptable to advance Islam, those saying "I was wrong, I don't believe that any more" may not be sufficient.

(And that's as far as I'm going on that subject. I'm sure the mods have better things to do than start swinging their Thump stick at me. tongue To put it mildly I am not a fan of Islam as a whole.)

That is a load of bollocks. The only people who said that are idiots like Robert Spencer. And I guess you know the verse too. I'm going to call you made that up.

Christians do that too.

Anyway, the problem with not re-admitting them isnt just the fairness issue. As long as they are overseas, they are part of the Daesh army, lending them strength and manpower with which to terrorize populations, or support terrorist actions overseas. Bringing them back is a way to bring them under control. Bringing them all back would clearly be a mistake, but letting the less violent offenders back in deprives the IS of their primary source of manpower, provides us with human intelligence on IS activities, and is a propaganda victory for us.

The main barrier to letting them back in isnt some sort of deep seated violent tendencies on the part of those wishing to return- it's that they're unemployed. That, and a sense of social isolation, was the primary reason most of them went to fight in Syria in the first place. If we let them back in, something has to be done to help them re-integrate into society, and that will cost money.

So it comes down to this: If we are willing to invest the resources to help these young men reintegrate into the community, then 90% of them are probably safe. If we aren't, then we shouldn't expect them to stay out of trouble.

As for the other 10%, the die-hards who are going to cause trouble regardless of what anyone does, some of them can be identified and kept out. Others are going to slip back in, and we should prepare ourselves for that.

16:106 to prove taqiyya? Laughable, it is actually about God's wrath on people who unbelief after professing belief. Exception is given to those who are compelled to not belief, but still belief.

That is how bad your source is. And come back when non-Muslims fight wars honestly.

I've honestly never heard of "taqiyya" outside of obscure anti-Muslim sites; and obscure Sunni anti-Shia sites (maybe all Muslims are using taqiyya to tell us it doesn't exist and we'll never know :O). If you want to criticise Islam; do so in a correct context, and say something that isn't total nonsense.

With the returning IS solider thing, you could always just declare war on IS officially and then put anyone who fought for IS into a POW camp. The man problem is that this would suck for the US, as it's illegal to torture PO Ws.

Terror suspects plotted to behead member of the public, court hears

Three Muslim radicals accused of plotting to behead a member of the public on the streets of Britain laughed and grinned as they appeared in court for the first time.

Cousins Nadir Sayed, 21, and Yousaf Syed, 19, along with Haseeb Hamayoon, 27, wanted to carry out the atrocity on home soil "imminently", the court heard. They were arrested days before Remembrance Sunday and arrived under heavy guard at Westminster Magistrates' Court after being charged with plotting the terrorist act today. It is understood the charges relate to an alleged plan to behead a member of the public in the UK, using knives.

The trio arrived at court on Thursday afternoon in two heavily armoured prison vans flanked by three unmarked police cars operating flashing blue lights and sirens. The security convoy halted traffic as it arrived at the court building before the towering shutters at the rear entrance were raised to allow the highly-guarded transporters through. One of the unmarked police cars followed the vans inside and disappeared behind the closing shutters before the other two security vehicles sped off up the road.

Mr Sayed, from Hounslow, Mr Syed, from High Wycombe, and Mr Hamayoon, from Hayes, spoke only to confirm their names and addresses during the short hearing. All three were arrested on November 6 on suspicion of plotting terrorist acts. They each wore the same grey Islamic dress with white collars.

Mr Sayed and Mr Syed refused to sit for most of the hearing, at times laughing hysterically as details of the evidence against them were read. Mr Hamayoon sat throughout the hearing, nodding and grinning at two older family members sat in the public gallery.

The young men are charged with intending to commit acts of terrorism and being jointly engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to their intention, contrary to section 5(1) of the Terrorism Act 2006. All three were remanded in custody to appear the Central Criminal Court on December 4.

I believe from a legal perspective one can only declare war on a recognized state.

I'm not sure, I remember seeing somewhere that there was consideration given to giving captured IRA member POW status (not sure if this was during the Irish war of independence or the Troubles though).

The main problem is that with a conventional war there will be an end and somewhere to return PO Ws to. It's not like we're goign to allow IS to exist peacefully ever.

[up][up] Homegrown terrorism scares me, all it takes if a few nuts with knives, I live in to central a bit of London to not be a bit nervous.

Al Shabob claims responsibility for Bus killing in Kenya

The bus was travelling to the capital, Nairobi, when it was stopped in Mandera county, not far from the Somali border.

Gunmen separated out non-Muslims by asking passengers to read from the Koran, officials and witnesses said. Those who failed were then shot in the head.

[up]As appaling as that event is, it does remind me that we've not heard much from Al Shabaab in Somalia for a while now. Makes me wonder / hope that they're increasingly a spent force there, and are being forced to try and recruit from Kenya instead in order to remain functional.

The Kenyan military has killed more than 100 al-Shabab militants linked to a deadly attack on a bus, Kenya's deputy president says.

Boko Haram attacks fishing villege on the Nigerian border with Chad, killing 48 A fish traders' group said some victims had their throats slit whilst others were tied up and drowned in Lake Chad.

The attack took place on Thursday, but the news took several days to come to light because Boko Haram has destroyed mobile phone masts in the area.

It was the second major attack in two days by Boko Haram.

Afghanistan lifts it's ban on night raids Ghani’s decision to reverse the 2013 ban on night raids sends a positive signal to the United States, but could prove controversial with the population. Karzai’s decision to ban the practice was in part driven by popular protest since government forces’ intrusion into citizen’s homes at night was, naturally, poorly received. However, Ghani’s decision comes at a time when the Taliban has been stepping up its operations across Afghanistan; a spate of deadly bombings has been taking place across the country. While night raids aren’t a silver bullet for Afghanistan’s Taliban problem, they represent one more counter-terrorism option in the ANA-SF and U.S. Special Forces toolkit.

Afghan mother and her family kill 25 Taliban rebels to avenge her son's murder

An Afghan woman has killed at least 25 Taliban militants to avenge the murder of her son who was a police officer in western Farah province.

According to reports, Reza Gul was forced to pick up arms after her son was shot dead by Taliban militants in front of her eyes.

She was supported by her daughter and daughter-in-law during the gun battle which lasted for almost 7 hours that left at least 25 Taliban militants dead and five others injured.

Different article about the same news story: http://www.tolonews.com/en/afghanistan/17230-afghan-mother-kills-25-taliban

Woken up by the gunfire, Reza Gul told TOL Onews that she had no other option but to pick up a weapon after she found her son, who was the in charge of an outpost, dead in front of her eyes.

"It was around 5 a.m. when my son's check post came under the attack of Taliban," Gul said. "When the fighting intensified, I couldn't stop myself and picked up a weapon, went to the check post and began shooting back."

Few minutes later, Gul was not alone when she found her husband, daughter, youngest son and daughter-in-law holding weapons and accompanying her in the fight against the insurgents.

"The fighting was intensified when we reached the battlefield along with light and heavy weapons," said Seema, Gul's daughter-in-law. "We were committed to fight until the last bullet." The fighting lasted several hours with 25 insurgents dead and many others wounded, she added.

"We started a kind of family war against the Taliban," Fatima, daughter of Gul said, adding that she was personally preparing bullets for her father and mother to fight off the enemies. Gul's husband Abdul Satar stated they were ready to sacrifice the entire family, but not allow the Taliban to get closer to the check post.

"My young son who was a police officer was killed in front of my eyes," Abdul Satar said. "I pulled aside his dead body and started fighting to defend my soil to prove that this is the soil of Malalay, the hero. I was committed to give up my life, but not my son's check post."

Sardar, the youngest member of the family, also participated in the battle by preparing bullets for his father.

"Taliban are foreigners, they are servants of Pakistan, if they attack 100 other times, I will continue to defend my country and will shed their blood to not let them dare to enter my village" the little fighter added.
