If a rename isn't done, the trope here should at least be limited to In-Universe examples and the potholes cleaned up.

This is one of those Verbal Tic tropes that just get linked from any sentence where a troper feels like saying it, isn't it?

This is a trope that is specifically about people realizing that they are doomed.
However, a lot of its use is simply either people saying "oh crap" or "oh shit" like it's a stock phrase or tropers negatively reacting to something like it's an audience reaction. Use degenerates to things like "I'm out of coins? Crap." That it's really short makes it a Pothole Magnet.
Here's an example of a problematic use:
