Tyrese Gibson's the last person on my mind when thinking of potential John Stewarts.

Admittedly, it's hard to beat that logic.

Not really. I can beat it pretty easily behind the safety of anonymity the internet provides me.

Impossible to beat that logic in person though.

Can't say I'm that exited about the possibility of Tyrese Gibson landing the role, mostly since I haven't watched a lot of his work.

Besides, everyone knows Idris Elba would make the best John Stewart. wink

Eh, G Ls don't really need muscles. In fact, I think you can get away with them not being ridiculously buff seeing as how the ring does everything for them. I think I even saw this humor article about the Green Lantern using steroids to keep himself in shape because he didn't get as much physical activity as the others.

I do appreciate his enthusiasm for the role, though.

I do hope they don't play up the military aspect of the character.

But the military aspect is a large part of what makes John Stewart's character, no?

I believe that was introduced by Justice League, a way to help differentiate his character from the rest of the team without making him an Angry Black Man the comics version often was. His most notable personal trait in the comics was being an architect, with his constructs abnormally detailed.

Gibson is not exact the first person who comes to mind for Stewart, but he has made his career off buddy crime/buddy cop movies. If they are officially going with a GL team up movie with Jordan and Stewart, that would be quite amazing.

And kind of ironic, too, if you think about it. The 2011 Green Lantern was directly mirroring Iron Man, while this new approach seems to bank off Guardians of the Galaxy. Some say Suicide Squad is following GOTG, but only in very superficial details (lesser known comic filled with lesser known characters on the fringe of the big names).

Generally though, superhero movies are totally sexist. Female superheroes are normally naked or in bikinis.

Confirmed to never have watched a single superhero movie. Really, I can't think of a single superhero movie with a naked female character other than Mystique, and even then, Wolverine has more 'actual' human-looking nudity than she does.

Yeah I could understand if she were talking about the comics, but the movies have avoided this for the most part. The only exceptions are Mystique who was nude in her blue form and Halle Berry's Catwoman.

As for the three women in Suicide Squad having the best roles I think that's in the eye of the beholder.

Harley Quinn - A woman who slept her way through college and ended up becoming partner in crime to an abusive psychopath because of her low self-esteem.

Enchantress - A woman who's fragile psyche caused her to develop a split personality because she couldn't handle her powers.

Amanda Waller - A government agent who somehow thinks a team of criminals and sociopaths are what America needs to be safe.

They've avoided this in the past by avoiding female superheroes almost entirely, but that is a separate criticism from "female superheroes are always naked or in bikinis," and it's one we're finally seeing progress on correcting.

"All female superheroes are naked or in bikinis when they appear in movies."

It's true that we've gotten very few naked or bikini female superheroes in the movies, but we've gotten very few female superheroes at all so the sample size doesn't give us a lot to work with. Of the very small number of female supers in film, however, those examples are hard to miss.

As a result, I can kind of see where she's coming from. Pepper Potts briefly gaining fire powers in an indestructible sports bra, Mystique being a nudist for no reason at all, and Halle Barry's Catwoman aren't the only examples of female superheroes we have, but they stand out pretty hard when female superheroes in general are few and far between.

Once Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel have hit the markets, this criticism will hopefully die down. If DC and Marvel screw the pooch on those films, however, the criticism will only worsen. Ultimately, while those complaints come in many flavors, the only actual cure for complaints that women are marginalized in superfilms is to stop marginalizing women in superfilms.

[up][up]f she wants to complain about the lack of super heroines in movies and t.v shows I can understand that. But that is NOT what she highlighted here. I'd say her complaining about a problem that doesn't exist in the movies is more likely to take attention away from the actual problems (i.e lack of solo super heroine movies, female characters who aren't just shallow love interests, female characters who aren't leaders, etc) All of the aforementioned are far more pressing matters than what few super heroines did or did not wear IMO.

Actually....we got Catwoman in some sort of half-bikini stripper costume, Jessica Alba as Invisible Woman having to drop her clothes every few minutes (while we never see her she is certainly constantly nacked in the movie), Black Widow being introduced as a underwear model in Iron Man 2 plus her "change in the car" scene and Mystique who apparently never wears clothes in her mutant form - I think someone has a point. Other than Supergirl in her awful movie and arguably Gamora, I can't think of any Superheroine who hasn't been either naked or in Bikini at one point.

Jessica Alba as Invisible Woman having to drop her clothes every few minutes (while we never see her she is certainly constantly nacked in the movie)

I think you're exaggerating that one a bit, especially by the time of the second movie. The X-Women save Mystique also avoid that kind of objetification, and their clothes are pretty much as sexy as those of the male heroes (White Queen is an exception, but not only she's an out and out villain, but she's a specifically seduction-oriented character since her comics creation).

Movie Batgirl's costume plays less with sexuality than Batman and Robin's (no nipples, for instance), and if you want to go there, Movie!Poison Ivy dressed very tame compared to her comics incarnation. Both actual Selina Kyles showed less skin than most comics versions of Catwoman ever do. Elektra's costume also was less revealing than Comics!Elektra was, even with the bare midriff.

He's definitely not. Jessica Alba being forced to do everything sexily (including, in the second movie, being told to die as sexily as possible) and in general be eye candy rather than a character was one of the worst things about that series, especially since her character was pretty much reduced to "textbook love interest" and lacked a lot of personality.

Even if she wasn't always literally in a bikini, she was always directed to treat that skintight costume as though she was.

The Invisible Woman, the most powerful member of the Fantastic Four, mind you, being reduced to generic eye candy is pretty offensive.

Meanwhile, Mystique, a dangerous self-motivated villain with a fantastic and badass costume being reduced to "Magneto's naked sidekick" isn't any better.
