Just a Face and a Caption: Tattooed Crook

Just shows a guy with a lot of tattoos. The closest it comes to suggesting "crook" to me is that there's what might be a skull on his chest... but otherwise I would just think that it's bodyart.

Surely we can get a guy in a prison jumpsuit with tattoos on his face, or a shot of a yakuza committing a crime, or SOMETHING.

First thing that came up when I searched for "prison tattoos."◊ Not perfect, but an improvement.

You're right. The picture is just some guy with a lot of tattoos without any indication that he's a criminal.

Sticking to fictional examples rather than further promoting and glorifying the actions of real criminals, what about Jack from Mass Effect? [1]

The OP pic is really good...not all that impressed with the game suggestion. Just for variety's sake, I'll throw out some potential Yakuza examples (some are NSFW for non-frontal nudity): 1◊, 2◊, 3◊, 4◊, 5◊.

While all are good examples, I honestly think 5 is the best because of the Yubitsume on the left hand.

None of those "people in underwears" pictures say crook to me.

The Jack picture works.

I'm guessing one would understand if one was familiar with Japanese gang culture. 1 and 3 work. All this really needs is a mugshot or the person in prison clothes.

While I'm sure that character's a great example, the image really doesn't do much to show that he's a crook.

He is being arrested...

You can see the police car in the background, and now that he mentioned he's being arrested, I can see a cop handling him.

Granted, the cop and the police car's blending into the background, but it DOES demonstrate the trope.

Especially since you can tell that the man's a Nazi supremacist just by looking at his tattoo.

The Ed Norton pic is pretty good, but I think the other suggestions are better.

The American History X or Mass Effect pics are good.

Not liking anything else, especially the generic people in underwears who are supposedly crooks.

American History X has my current support. Not crazy about it, though. Maybe Knife-wielding Goro Majima?◊ There's got to be something from the Yakuza series...

It's subtle, but I really like 8. What the tattoo is really helps.

@Karjam and : Or he might be Hindu. Or Buddhist. Why is it that "Western" media tend to forget that the swastika first started - and continues to this day - as a religious symbol; particularly in Eastern religions.

That's... reaching. I mean, I know it's true but no one is going to look at him and think "yep, that's certainly a devout Buddhist." Lots of things start out one way, but their meanings have been perverted.

Considering the dude is

A) Clearly Caucasian

B) With a shaved head (Skinheads are called that for a reason)

C) Has barbed wire tattoos.

I think it's safe to assume he's not a devout Hindu or Buddhist.

Lastly, Hindu and Buddhist Swastika are traditionally not tilted 45 degree.

Not saying that he doesn't look like a thug. Just commenting on the tendency of how people just automatically assume swastika = Nazi; and subsequently how the swastika can be used to "sell" the idea that a character is bad like some sort of short hand.

Just chalk it up as another thing that the Nazis ruined.

Funnly enough, I was just watching Yu Yu Hakusho and they actually put one on a fighters forehead as a proper symbol(he was a monk type)

On topic, Google images is turning up nothing I like. This is a hard one.

Anyway, since the swastika's often associated with Nazism, despite the fact that it's a religious symbol, you can still tell that he's a Nazi.

It's only when you look too into things like what you're doing that you see a potential conflict, which isn't what JAFAAC is about (it's about if the image doesn't actually explain anything at all without a caption to accompany it).

Never said that the guy wasn't a Nazi or that it was wrong to interpret him as one. The thing I'm arguing against is your reasoning. It's not the swastika that sells it but the overall package - skinhead and all - that has him looking like a stereotypical Aryan Nation member. Basically, I'm saying he looks like a Neo Nazi not purely because of his swastika tattoo but because he's a bare-chested, Caucasian skinhead with a swastika tattoo getting arrested by a cop.

I still think #3 is better. It's clearer on both accounts.
