A line of work that involves being away from home for long periods and the fear of losing that person at any given time? I'd say that could be pretty similar to having a parent in the military who's been deployed to the Middle East.

An old idea I've had for a while is nagging at me again. It's inspired by the Billy Joel song The Downeaster 'Alexa' , which is about a fisherman who has to take his boat far away from home in order to find fish and support his family.
In the story the father is a crab fisherman in Dutch Harbor and I'm having a bit of difficulty depicting the effects this would have on his daughter Alexa (the protagonist). It's punningly titled ''The Dutch Harbor Alexa".
Right now one of my parents is away from home for work, but my dad isn't a crab fisherman (although he did go on business trips frequently) so I don't know how reliable my experiences are in portraying a situation where the father might be dead at any moment. So does anyone have any close family members involved in commercial fishing or know anything about it would effect family life? Also, anyone know anything about the likely "culture" of a fishing village?
