Another little tidbit I noticed about Unikitty, it looks like she is permanently in her angry state judging by what we have seen so far. Clearly something happened to her in the war and I am assuming it has to do with the Sister.

Out of all the Brothers' characters I think she would of liked Unikitty the best for very obvious reasons. I suspect she did...something to Unikitty that put her in that angry state over this films time. Unikitty also got kidnapped by the Sisters' characters which might play into that theory that the Sister likes her and is responsible for her state.

Also, does anyone know who that astronaut villain is? I am not very familiar with LEGO friend rigs so I wouldn't know if they come from anywhere in particular

... shoot I read a synopsis that the planet they visit turns everything they do and say into a musical.

I have a kind of sore taste, or at least very stringent requirements, when I see a musical in a movie theater, and I wonder that I'll be cringing for 2/3 of it.

... the astronaut and her ship appear to be wholly created for the movie and will likely just receive her own LEGO set retroactively.

The Sistar System is musical?

Well, LEGO Friends does have Frozen sets...

They do have medals for almost, and they're called silver!

It kind of sounded like the planet they visit that turns everything into a musical was just a pit stop as opposed to their final destination, cuz the synopsis said it was one of the planets they visit. Though maybe the musical planet is in the Sistar System, I dunno.

Regardless, I love musicals and junk so I'm gonna enjoy the heck out of the time they spend on the musical planet!

... I have a sudden fear.

The astronaut could be a LEGO Friends figure.

She is. I don't think she's supposed to be a specific one that actually exists but she's definitely supposed to be designed like one.

How are you sure? I mean with how they mask her, her identity is clearly supposed to be a twist reveal.

I'm not, she just doesn't match any of the Friends figures I've seen. To clarify, I'm talking about the specific astronaut design and I have no idea what she could be underneath her helmet.

[up][up] My siblings use LEGO Friends rigs and they look very similar to her but yeah people whom are more familiar with those rigs are saying that the astronaut villain doesn't resemble any known rig so far but likely will be one in the future due to merchandising. I am not sure if she is hiding something under the helmet, LEGO Friends rigs tend to look pretty generic.

I remember an article where they said that this movie would be using both Finn's and his sister's imaginations, so I'm wondering if Sweet Mayhem might be the hero in the sister's story and she kidnaps the people because she needs their help fighting some threat to the Sis-star system.

I believe the term used for the Lego Friends figures is "minidoll" - and yes, the mysterious astronaut is definitely one. It is emphatically not one that has been in a set before now, although its accessories and general style are based off of items already made (there's some tweaks that could be done to molds from Lego Elves, for example).

That said, it's not like it's unusual for there to be new figures based on the films - there wasn't a minifig like Wyldstyle before the movie came out, nor was there hair like President Business' hair.

Oh no I was not saying it was unusual, was just curious if she was actually an minidoll that you can find already.

If there was one it would probably give us more indication what her personality is like.

Huh, interesting take, given that my first impression is that the sequel is going to expand on the themes that ran through the first. I'm feeling pretty good about what we're seeing so far (not to mention the giggles I get every time I think "huh, the movie went all Mad Max on us... and Emmet is still Emmet."

This movie needs to tread very carefully. That "hapless male" line pretty heavily genders the conflict of the film, creating the impression that it's not so much going to be "older sibling v. younger sibling" but rather "boy v. girl". Painting the female gender as The Bad Guy is some treacherous waters to be rowing in.

I saw some people crediting it as a criticism of the previous film, but, like, it's not. It's coming from a character who, at least in this trailer, is being presented as the bad guy. That's indicative that it's not meant to be something you necessarily agree with, end of story, but rather that it's setting up Emmett's arc for the film: proving that yes, he's totally deserving to be the leader and that the entirely valid criticism of the previous film was totes unfair.

Which is not to say that the film won't be able to pull it off, especially if they present the boy overreacting to having to let his sister play as the instigation of the conflict, leading to him (and Emmett by extension) having to acknowledge and accept her. The film isn't doomed by any means just because it seems more interested in talking about gender than age. But, y'know. Rough waters. Tread carefully.

The astronaut being presented as a mysterious entity, even in the poster, leads me to believe she isn't the villain at all as a reveal twist.

I'm inclined to agree. There's a major difference between "antagonist" and "villain." I have no problem believing that the minidoll astronaut will be the former, but I also suspect they won't be the latter.

Yeah I don't think for a second that Sweet Mayhem will be a true villain.

In fact I'm pretty sure that working through the differences between younger boys and girls and how they play is the plot.

Yeahhh that's what I think too. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some other major villain that Sweet Mayhem and Emmet and everyone else end up teaming up to fight, representing F Inn and his sister finally playing together. I think the plot is definitely being instigated by Finn refusing to play with his sister (probably because of assumptions of how his sister plays, i.e. "Girly stuff is stupid") and his sister being pissed off about it.

I figure that's probably the case too, but I'm nervous. For all the subverting of the whole "Bland white dude Everyman Chosen One" thing that the first Lego Movie engaged in, it did ultimately wind up playing the trope totally straight with Emmett's return to the Lego world. He spontaneously became a Master Builder, "defeated" Lord Business, and saved the world from the threat of the Kragle despite the film's constant reminders of how stupid and unlikely that would be.

The first film spent a lot of time lampshading the ridiculousness inherent to this standard Everyman Hero setup, but recognizing its inanity did not stop them from actually doing that same exact story nonetheless. If you take out all the jokes about Emmett, you're left with a paint-by-numbers Everyman Hero formula played completely straight.

Which is why, like I said, they need to tread lightly with this one. The desire to make Emmett the unambiguous Everyman Hero undermined previous film's message about how there is no special Chosen One hero and that everyone and anyone can be that hero, resulting in a message more equivalent to Captain Hammer's tone-deaf but well-meaning song.

  • Everyone’s a hero in their own way
  • Everyone’s got villains they must face
  • They’re not as cool as mine
  • But folks, you know it’s fine to know your place
  • Everyone’s a hero in their own way
  • In their own not-that-heroic way

Thus: they need to tread carefully with this one. 'Cause if they bring the same care to talking about kid sisters as they did to subverting the Everyman Hero formula, we're gonna have some problems.

I noticed people whining about that comment

I personally just took it as the astronaut minidoll being completely unaware of what actually happened with Emmet which would make sense. She is one of the Sister's characters and the Sister definitely wouldn't be aware of the importance of Emmet or just not care.

Wyldstyle always was a bit showoffy and independant anyway so the minidoll might be trying to appeal to that side of her.
