Space Wolf, Did you become a Hindu in the influence of ISKCON?

The so-called "Hare Krishna" group...? Nope; I became a Hindu on an independent level.

My aunt is part of that group. Can you explain what seperates them from traditional Hindu?

Also, unrelated question, how do you know what your dharma is? Is something you have to soul search to find out?

There are several differences between ISKCON and traditional Vaishnavism, but the man one is that ISKCON members see Krishna as the Supreme Being, as opposed to seeing him as the eighth avatar of Vishnu. They also tend to confine their scriptures to things like the Bhagavad Gita. There's nothing wrong with them, as a sect, but they don't fall under my particular branch, so I know comparatively little about their exact practices.

There are several definitions of dharma, within Hinduism, which have various parameters. Most of them indicate the importance of things like ahimsa (nonviolence), kama (sex), charity, and other things, but I believe that it's important to pursue your own dharma. I'll have to look more into the details.

They're scattered, in threads which are unrelated to this one.

Krishna Janmashtami is coming up, in eight/nine days, depending on tradition.

Good to see you mate,I thought you forgot about this post. BTW you pronounced "navrati" or is it a typo? You learned Hindi yet! If you know even little then I can help you. Like your (nick)name will be written like this-स्पेस वुल्फ़.

If you learned any then you can come to Hindi Wikipedia. I'm a reviewer there and we have more active users whose native language is not Hindi. Maybe this is the case for all Indian languages as you would probably know that many (particularly the metro ones) Indians are terribly ashamed to speak (rare) or write (common) their mother tongue. So you can come to the party!

Ah. Okay.

I still can't do much for Diwali, though. I don't have a diya, and I don't live near a temple. I wish that I could be in India.

Oh, but you can do that with candles. We too light candles with diya. Colourful candles would look great. And for the temple... you can go to a Indian neighbourhood. I'm sure there will be a one near you. And then light a few crackers! If it is allowed. BTW Wish you Happy and prosperous Diwali!!!grin
