I think that it's a good thing that there aren't any High School AU's. It means the Under Tale community has more creativity then that.

I mean, to be fair, I've definitely seen high school-setting one-off joke comics. If stuff like Undynetale or the Undertake Telenovela count, then I'd say those should count too, right? :p

The fanfics are AU because the game's verse is extremely self-contained; Developer's Foresight means most "what if the protagonist did this nstead" feel mapped out. To a ludicrous degree.

Besides the A Us, Undertale is also the only fandom I've been part of that has such a tremendous about of Reader-Insert fics. It kind of boggles my mind, especially since 95% of the characters are non-human. I guess that's the appeal? LOL.

Or maybe the fanfic scene has changed over the years and writers would rather just write straight up reader-insert over creating their own OCs?

Reader Insert fanfics were also fairly popular in the My Little Pony fandom for a while, with some being rather squicky.

Probably the latter. Undertale isn't the only fandom where there's a lot of these, and Mary Sues aren't in vogue anymore so why bother with the middleman when it comes to shameless self-indulgence.

Personally I prefer Toriel as a mother figure for Sans but to each their own.

I ship Toriel/Asgore in AUs where the Terrible Things That Happened To Them didn't happen (for example). Which has also led to me kinda sorta shipping them in canon.

I ship Asgore/Toriel no matter the occasion
