So. I searched, and didnt find a topic for this game. so I decided to make one because I just started today because the expansion came out. And my god is this game fun.

Especially flying about in a Dhelan class Warbird shooting things with lasers.

so far, level 11 Romulan who allied with the federation. Sadly, maintenance has cut short my adventures of flying about saving the universe in the name of the Romulan Federation for a short while. So far the story is quite entertaining, though.

When the game originally came out I wasn't very impressed, but I've heard word that over time it has slowly improved and expanded over the original content. Question is though, by how much, and how grindy is it in comparison to other MMOS? Last thing I wanna play is another WOW copy but with just a different paintjob.

Oh, one more question: how does the space combat play like? Do you have direct control over what happens and can dodge attacks via maneuvering, or is it just a number-cruncher like EVE Online?

1: Its not very grindy at all so far. I've been playing for like 2 days as a romulan and already have a level 25 (out of 50) character.

granted. learning the skill system for officers and your own character takes a bit of time

2: space combat is in pretty much full 3d, complete with customizeable starships and your npc companions manning various stations and giving you extra cooldown abilities for your cool starship.

You cant completely dodge attacks based solely on movement (hit or miss is an RNG roll), but moving out of the firing arc of a weapon you can do.

on a sidenote, apparently this expansion is what the City of heroes devs were hired on to help with

I've managed to get a Starfleet character up to 49 in about a month.

so far my romulan starfleet is 32 and rising. at first I hated the D'Deridex for how sloooooooow it is

Then I looked on the forums and found out its also got a ridiculous hull rating and works great for laying shit-tons of mines.

and nothing quite amuses like an Elachi teleporting behind me thinking he's got the drop on me, and suddenly 20 mines are flying at him.

I really enjoy this game and it makes me sad that its looked down on by alot of Trekkies. Yes, it had a very very VERY rough start. But after Legacy of Romulus it's really grown the beard and gotten really really fun.

I really like the Lo R expansion, but the memory it eats up gives me framerate lag every 15 seconds and now it's not so much fun to play anymore. Strangely, the lag gets worse on the lower graphics.

I've been playing for well over a year now, and have my character completely leveled up. That's about the only downside I've really found so far, though. It doesn't take long to completely level up your character. I think they should have required more points per level or something like that.

I still haven't made a Romulan character yet, mostly because I'm still trying to give it a bit more time for them to work the bugs out.

It's honestly a really fun game and if you need a space combat fix, it does that very well. The shame is the ground combat portion is lacking in comparison, but the game is worthwhile for at least a level-through on all sides. I'm not sure it's got staying power over the long term.

I was there at the beginning and it feels like an entirely new game now. There's actual STORIES now.

And dialogue!

I played through some of the Klingon story - got to where [[spoilers: Alex dies]] then gave up. Love it, but the ground combat isn't great Ship combat is great fun though.

Always struck me as interesting that the Gorn specialty is SCIENCE vessels though. May dip a toe back in again. But it is good enough to encourage some actual spending.

Never actually played this but saw it on the Arc launcher. How free to play is it?

Well so much for that idea, stuck at 'patching'.

Attempt number 2 to install the game, lol. So any answer to my question?

So, it is completely free - the money you want to spend can go towards some of the more premium ships (Which are better) - however, you get access to good ships via the story.

The purchasable ones are basically a bit better in certain regards - more hard-points,or more exotic options. Paying means you can unlock them earlier, directly, rather than waiting for random drops. Also the currencies allow you to get different items, perks etc.

So you can go through without spending a dime, but paying can allow you to get better crew or ships earlier. It makes some missions a bit easier, but overall you can just plug in and play. It's a fun time sink, though. I prefer the ship to ship combat - feels like a proper space battle.

So I was watching someone complain about the progression when you reach 50, I noticed you dont get a ship then... so how does progression go from 50 to 60 and beyond?

That I'm not 100% about. Think it's very grindy and does expect you to invest in the expansions.

Ugh, well I guess I will figure it out.

I am starting to really notice the class roles in the game with Tactical being DPS, Science being heals and buffs, and Engineering being the heals, pet class and tanks? Unsure about that.

How structured is that at higher levels? If it is structured like other MM Os I probably should reroll another character, picked Engineering thinking healer and possibly mechanical pets and don't really want to be a tank.
