So I think I've found the game that settles the "most realistic first person shooter on the market" debate:

So who else thinks this game makes a good case for "easy reloading," "easy aiming," and "unrealistically tough protagonists" as an Acceptable Breaks from Reality?

Ah yes, this game. Got it for free several months back with the preorder of Overgrowth. Never played it much though, because of how realistic it is in terms of simulating the many processes in prepping and using a gun.

I think it's mainly a matter of how the game is designed. Granted, this game in particular doesn't have that much content, but it's a very interesting and rather fun experiment. The game is basically a roguelike in FPS form, encouraging careful and smart play, and conservation of ammunition. I think something like this could be something very interesting with more content.

After the initial preparations when starting a new game, mind you, it's actually fairly easy to maintain the gun you have, especially if you have a revolver. You just mainly have to make sure the safety's off, there's a bullet in the chamber, and the hammer is cocked, before you can get started. And if you're using the S&M Model 10, you should make sure the semi-automatic isn't on.

http://blog.wolfire.com/2012/07/What-is-the-story-in-Receiver-about This explanation of the plot by one of the developers has kind of ruined the game for me.

Does the game make something of consolidating bullets in a single magazine? It's super common in video games but very impractical in real life in the middle of combat.

[up]You won't be doing it in the middle of combat, but all the time inbetween.

Enemies will basically always kill you in a few seconds or sit on the other side of a wall forever, so if you have enough time to change magazines, you have enough time to load every round individually. Putting loose rounds can be done more easily by muscle memory and even having any spare magazines to use depends on your randomly generated start loadout.

You won't only find yourself moving your bullets into one magazine, you'll just stop carrying any extra magazines at all.
